Rosewood is a funeral home and private cemetery located on the west side of Witchduck Road between…read moreits intersection with Independence & Virginia Beach Boulevard. It's a large cemetery that is the final resting place for some of my friend's close family members. One I considered a friend and a great Fantasy Football competitor. The world misses his sense of humor and devotion to his family. The other is a child who never got to grow older and is buried next to his grandfather. The cemetery is well kept. Mowing and removal of dead flowers is regularly done. There is a crypt & a columbarium. The reason for the three star review is the required tombstone design. They are all flat to the ground with a holder in which flowers can be placed. The view from the road only shows the content of the flower holders. This lover of cemeteries prefers standing tombstones of various designs, many of which tell the story of a life. I've visited and photographed cemeteries from Massachusetts to Mississippi and love sharing them on line with family members from afar, who would otherwise never see their ancestors grave. Although Rosewood Memorial Park is immaculately maintained, I've seen many flat tombstones that have become covered with grass and dirt. During my explorations I always take a small hoe & trowel to free the flat tombstone of strangers as much as possible. I'm sure it's a matter of personal preference. But I don't like the aesthetics of a cemetery with only flat tombstones with the only visible part of the grave being the holder for flowers.

Aubrey is in one of the outside facing crypts, per his wishes. Very sad, really, to watch them scissor lift the casket into place, slide it in, then seal it up with caulk and duct tape before covering it back over with the marble. The staff, even the guys not in suits, were appropriately professional and quiet, giving the family plenty of room to grieve while they did what they needed to do.

Her compassion, sympathy and understanding and ability to get things done expeditiously without being pushy, or overwhelming made this difficult process seamless and a lot less stressful. Emily is a very kind soul and asked us what kind of send off we would like to provide our father. She acknowledged that everyone has a different expectation of what their loved one would like for their funeral and she was dedicated to find out what exactly our needs and wants were For our father specifically. We did not feel pressured at any time for any upsells or things we did not want or need. From the time we stepped into Altmeyer we knew this was the right facility. It's a gorgeous funeral home that feels more like a home. It's spacious, plenty of seating in the lobby area with tv screens throughout the funeral home playing serene beautiful landscapes and calming music. During your loved one's visitation they play a video compilation of their pictures. When you enter the facility straight ahead is a lovely wall water feature and the reception area. It's very spacious with around six square tables that seat four to a table and several tall tables for standing guests. They have a beautiful granite bar area for you to bring your own food if you wish for your visitation or if you want to cater through them or someone else. Altmeyer provides water, coffee and tea and freshly baked cookies. Behind the granite bar area is a kitchen, if you need to heat anything. They have a microwave, oven and kitchen sink and two full fridges to store food. The only thing missing is a stove top,but the microwave and oven worked wonders with keeping food warm and heating things up! Don't worry about buying ice because they have ice makers in the kitchen and behind the bar area. They truly do think of EVERYTHING! To the right in a separate area is the viewing room and to the left of the reception is another seating area. There is no lack of space here! In addition they have a huge funeral chapel in the same building that seats 300 people. We utilized everything! Not only is this particular location top notch, but their employees are top notch as well! Not once did they appear to be focused on getting paid, even though of course you need to pay them ;-) Without a doubt you can tell that their priorities are treating you as family and to comfort you during these truly difficult and immensely sad times. It truly was a breath of relief that we were blessed to have worked with Emily and the Altmeyer family. Not to forget, Radar their pet therapy dog :) !! He is an absolute doll and a hit with the kids. He's a golden doodle and made these rough times, a lot more bearable and pleasant. Some of our guests thought he was our own dog :) He's not an added cost but a bonus when you work with Altmeyer. He is on a leash with one of the employee's during visitation and he even comes to the interment! Don't worry, during visitation he's not brought into the food area. There is plenty of other spaces to bring him and they are respectful of those who may be fearful of dogs, but he's the absolute BEST! Altmeyer does do military discounts, if you do pre funeral arrangements. They also helped with ensuring my father received military honors for his funeral. Make sure you have your DD214 in hand for military honors. Fortunately our Dad was able to have the honor guard come to his funeral. With the packages, a gift is included of choice. We chose a nice portrait of my parents' wedding pic and it turned out BEAUTIFUL! To give you an idea that they TRULY think of EVERYTHING!! Altmeyer doesn't stop caring after your loved one's funeral has passed. They sent us a letter inviting us to celebrate a holiday remembrance service for those who utilized their services from last October to this November. It was a nice way to remember our Dad during the holidays. They understand that what is typically a joyous time is also a sad and difficult time without our lost loved one. They had a wonderful singer who sang two songs and a nice speech and a candle lighting in honor of our loved one. Afterwards they had light refreshments of cookies, sandwiches, and cake. They even had ornaments with our loved one's name engraved on a dove with their name and birthdate and death year. Our family cannot thank Emily Foster enough for her kindness, professionalism, compassion and making sure that Dad was celebrated in a beautiful way. She truly did an excellent job. Also, even though I didn't have Angie (Angela) as a funeral director she was also a joy and honor to meet. I highly recommend Altmeyer, you're in good hands with honoring your loved one. Mr. Altmeyer himself even introduced himself and offered his condolences when we met with Emily and shook our hands.

I attended this location for the home-going services of a family friend. When driving, you must slow down or you'll miss the exit. There is plenty of parking, staff were extremely courteous and accommodating. Each pew had a box of tissues for mourners and the person selected to speak did a phenomenal job. They have a television on the left and right side of the room to allow for viewing of photos that were in a montage of the deceased. Everything was tasteful and timely. Not that I'm looking to give them any business anytime soon; but I do think they are affordable, professional and able to anticipate the needs of a grieving family without price gouging.

When we saw our son at the funeral home he looked like a perfect little boy sleeping. They did his makeup very naturally which is what I really appreciated. The makeup wasn't caked on and it actually made him look more alive than he did at the hospital. Not only that but they dressed him and put him in a swaddle accompanied with a teddy bear. Together my baby boy and the teddy bear looked so cute and I'm so glad they provided that to him because I felt a sense of relief that he wasn't alone. Sometimes it's the little details that matter. My son was beautiful and I want to thank Sheri Mathis for taking care of our son so so well.

We sought the services of Woodlawn last year when my Aunt passed away, and Liana made the process go smoothly as possible. I couldn't believe how beautiful she looked. Now here we are again, needing their services again, as my grandmother passed away on April 8th. With the issue of COVID-19, things were a little different. We had the pleasure of working with Liana again, and she arranged for a private viewing of my grandmother, where we could view her in groups of 10. We were not able to have a traditional funeral, therefore, a private gravesite funeral was arranged to host my grandmother's Home Going celebration, and it was just as beautiful, just like she was. The grounds of where your loved one will be laid to rest, are simply gorgeous. I hope this review will give someone reassurance that your family will be well taken care of. So with that being said, losing a loved one is never easy, but Woodlawn will make your experience as seamless as possible.
