I love this beach. It's quiet, small, secluded. It has parking. It can get busy on weekends. Family friendly. Kids jump off the rocks. Lots of trees for shade. Snorkeling is OK. Depends on conditions. I've only seen it good, but some friends say it can get a little murky. Super relaxing. When I go here, I stay all day. It's my happy place. Zone out. Chill. Relax. Water is calm, sandy bottom with bordering reef. Great for swimming or floating.

On our last day in Kona we decided to stop by a different beach we hadn't been to so we can watch the sunset and beach 69 didn't disappoint! We really wish we had brought our swimsuits and towels to stay longer and enjoy vs. just stopping by. There weren't many people, lots of open space, and very pretty. They do have a machine where you pay $10 per car and $5 pp. I would definitely put this on your list to visit, a lot less crowded vs. Hapuna beach.

Nice beach and lots of good snorkeling. Highly recommend wearing water shoes if you have them because even the entry is a bit rocky. Lots of shade trees but the beach is relatively small and narrow so not a ton of room to set up for the day and picnic or anything. Non-residents are $5/pp and then $5/car, I believe.

Beach is beautiful and calm. If you have kids this is the place to go. Be prepared to pay $10 per car and $5.00 per person y you get there early. On my experience you don't pay after 2:00pm

7/1/22: This beach had lots of sea life when we went, which made it fun for snorkeling. I got to see a turtle swim by me and so many colorful fish of all sizes. I feel I saw more sea life here than the $120 snorkel excursion I paid for 2 days earlier. I appreciated how there was enough sand space in the water unlike other beaches I had visited, Which were filled with sharp rocks as soon as entering the water. It is best to wear water shoes, for the fishes are mainly surrounding the rocks, BUT I feel it's not a must. Just stay floating when ever over the rocks. Waves were calm on our visit, clear enough and warm. We arrived about 3pm and wasn't too crowded. Enough shade provided by the trees, didn't need to use my umbrella. I had read on one post that after 2pm there was no parking or entrance fee... so we didn't pay parking and had no ticket when we left at 6:30pm. Showers are located right at the exit, steps away from the parking.

This was my favorite beach in the Waikoloa Beach Resort area. It's on the smaller side, but it's not very crowded. This is probably the biggest reason why I love it. It's also a great place to snorkel. We brought equipment from our Airbnb and really enjoyed the snorkeling. There were a large variety of fish and I even saw a sea turtle. It is a pretty rocky beach which is what makes for good snorkeling, but it doesn't make for the best swimming. There's several trees on the beach which means there's shade to relax in. Parking within the gate is $5 like all state parks. There's also a hot malasadas truck at the corner of this road and the highway. Stop there as well! I'd definitely recommend checking out this beach if you're in the area!

Great beach! Super pretty trees. It was stressful with three little kids as the trees create kind of alley ways for your access to the beach. Very shady. Lots of great spots to plop down and read a book. There were lots of waves the day we were there so we didn't snorkel. Thinking about coming back to snorkel sometime soon.

Nice hidden beach with some picnic tables near the front (we ate our Foodland lunch here before finding a spot on the beach). They have bathrooms and showers too near the parking lot. Down at the beach, there is shade and the walk isn't far. You have lots of options in both directions for finding a spot to pitch your towel and relax.

Beautiful beach just to the left of Hapuna but on the same turnout on the highway. The best thing about this beach is that the trees go all the way to the water and provide shade as well as some great scenery. The swimming can be complicated a bit by the rocks so bring water shoes if you plan on wading. As of January 2022 the parking for tourists has gotten pretty steep! $10 for the car and $5 a person. So if you're not going to spend a significant bit of time here it may not be worth it.

I love this beach because it is full of shade.. So if you do not want too much sun or burn all day, then this beach it is for you. It is clean and the water is sparkling all the time.. You can donate the $5 for parking but it is the honor system. I will def. be back to this beach b/c i do not favor the sun all day.. I rather go for a dip then relax under the shaded trees. read more

Gorge! Local friend took me here. I thought at first she was going to kill me because the drive to get here was a little sketchy. It was around 9 am. Ha. Got to the beach, fairly small compared to other beaches in town. There are no shades, so bring a beach umbrella. Sand. OMG fine powder and soft to the touch! Aaahhhh...I wanna come back here! read more

We felt lucky to have found this beach, which we saw was recommended by many. It is just past the Hapuna Beach parking. It is not a wide beach, but that means you're close to the water. There is ample shade from all of the trees. We didn't end up needing to use the umbrella. It is a beautiful place and a lovely place to spend an afternoon. We were even able to see Haleakalā in the distance! It was a beautiful day. read more

This beach was suggested by someone at Kings shop for being enclosed by trees on a windy day. There are some rocks for climbing and snorkeling. My toddler mostly enjoyed playing with the sand. There are outdoor showers to rinse off at on the way back to the car and bathrooms too. Parking was $5 at a pay machine which receipt was place on our dash as proof of payment which is very reasonable to enjoy this kid friendly beach. We were informed by other beach goers that they do check. read more

This place is picturesque but not a good place to snorkel since the shore is limited with the brush. Good place to explore and hike for a little bit. Parking is $5. If you want to snorkel or body board, go to Hapuna up the road. read more

This beach is so great for families especially for kiddos from 3 years old and on. Get there early to get a spot because it does get busy. The sand is fine, lots of trees and driftwood for shade, and parking is easy too. Great local beach. read more

Absolutely my favorite beaches of the trip! It's got it all in my opinion! Easy access, Sandy beaches, just the right amount of waves, lots of shade, and the snorkeling is awesome!! We saw tons of fish and turtles and it's an easy swim for everyone! Only negative thing is I wish we were found this beach first. Would have stayed all week! Highly recommended.. read more

Lovely beach if you are looking for shade options in the trees, white sand and great snorkeling. You can hang a hammock and read or nap by the sea. You can go left or right on the trail. There is a parking lot, showers & restrooms. A street down from Hapuna state beach if you're into beach hoppin! read more

One of the smaller beaches in the area. Parking is convenient and the walk to the beach is short. Nice clean water outdoor shower and large bathrooms with changing areas. Water was fairly turbid, but one can snorkel out quite a ways without feeling at risk. Lots is different fish. I saw 2 sea turtles one time. Be careful to avoid cuts from the rocks. read more

Don't go to this beach. Go to Spencer's. Leave this one for me. ALL FOR ME!!!! Blue waters, big dead tree to climb, shade, and showers. This place has pretty much all I need, so yeah, go play at the other ones and let me keep this treasure all for myself. ;) read more

beautiful beach MUST have beach shoes if you're thinking about getting in the water. we saw a turtle swimming near us when we visited the big island in October. Most people brought snorkeling gear so that could be something we could do next time. read more

Somewhat secluded but there were people. $5 parking - honor system. There are rocks for sure in this beach so the sand wasn't all pure and refined. But there is some tree shade which I liked and there are swinging ropes for fun. A shower station and bathrooms were provided. read more

Happened to stumble upon this hidden gem and so glad we did. Short walk down a path from the parking lot. The sand is powder soft and the water is different shades of blue. It is a small beach which was a great way to introduce our 1.5 year old. We had plenty of shade under one of the many trees and the shower right near the parking lot was very convenient. This is a GREAT beach!! It's sandy and rocky. you can swim here and the snorkeling is FANTASTIC! There is plenty of shade and picnic tables. On almost every occasion we have seen sea turtles. the water is warm. It's a great locals beach off the beaten track. read more

Beautiful private and secluded beach. Water was great. A little choppy so no snorkeling. My only complaint was there was no beach to sit on. I guess it was high tide so the waves came all the way up the beach. Really cool trees line the beach with lots of shade for those who don't want to sit in the sun read more

One of my favorite beaches in all of Hawaii. I've been to Maui, Big Island, and Kauai ... and I just love the speech more than any other! A must see when on the big Island! And on your way there as soon as you pass the airport look to the right to see a big love it too. You cannot she walked through it and come out the other side! read more

This was by far one of our favorite beaches. Ample shade on a long stretch of beach, calm clear water and fish you won't see in other areas though not as plentiful. The water entrance is mostly sandy on the main beach with outlying crops of rock. We came here when there was a swell affecting the more southerly beaches. Showers, restrooms, picnic tables, garbage cans but no lifeguard. You'll want to bring anything you need as there are no vendors or stores nearby. We stopped at Kings shop and got a Kalua pork pizza to bring with, mmm. Perfect for spending an entire day either relaxing or snorkeling. I'm usually wary of getting in open water, but was very comfortable here and had a great time. No, I didn't think I saw a lurking shadow, which I did at other places (paranoid) :D Even though it may seem crowded, there's room for everyone. There didn't seem to be strong undertow the two times we went. It's beautiful and out of the way, you'll feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. read more

Best kept secret! It's just south of World famous Hapuna Beach. There's lots of shade trees near the shore, so you can hang out in the shade while you watch the kids play in the surf. It's a local favorite! read more

Lots of tropical fish right off shore! Great public beach with showers and restrooms. Trees for shade, perfect place for snorkeling. This beach was recommended by several locals as top snorkel spot on the Big Island. We saw a huge turtle and a wide assortment of tropical fish. The sand was very hot. There are no chairs or concession stands/carts, so plan to bring your own. There are signs posting " no animals/ pets". read more

Turtles everywhere and the water is calm in most parts. Kinda cool how the ocean meets the fern forest. I would have wanted to come back on a sunnier day but hey that's Hilo for you. This place is very beautiful and you need to come here while in Hilo. read more

It's a gorgeous beach adjacent to Mauna Kea Resort, a pretty exclusive hotel and part of the autograph collection of Marriott. This is a great beach to walk end to end, in the water or on the beach. You can snorkel or swim out your one of the platforms or just lay and work on your tan. It's my solo go to beach while on the island. Afterwards there is a great beach restaurant to meander over to and imbibe and nibble. Not always an easy beach to gain access to but well worth the effort.

Not the place to swim, nor frolick in the water. I would say, if you're very careful, snorkeling is nice here because of the rocks and reef. You don't have to go out far to find rocks, reef, and sea-life here, o snorkeling in this location is nice. The 10 to 15 feet of shoreline is suffocated by overgrown and uprooted (root exposed) rotted trees. There is a smell that overwhelms when you're on the beach, It comes from those trees. Sand spots are few and far in between because of the trees. Shade, however, is very prevalent here. I do not recommend this beach, especially if you have children with precious feet, arms, legs, and bodies that can be scraped, scratched, or cut by the rocks and coral reef.

It is not shaded until the fishponds, but luckily when we went it was overcast. I enjoyed the historical significance of the area.

I've been to the Jersey Shore, Miami Beach, Santa Monica Beach, Horseshoe Bay, and tons of other places, including Hawaii's black sand beach and Hapuna Beach, but there is nothing quite like this. It isn't your typical beach, with very little sand, tons of trees, rocks filled with sea urchin in the water, etc. When we went, it was nearly empty, so we found a spot to drop our stuff and went snorkeling. It was absolutely amazing. The warm water was crystal clear and there were thousands of fish out and about the reef. The sand is soft and the trees provide coverage from the blistering sun. It might be the closest thing to paradise that I've found on this planet. read more
