BAD COCKROACH INFESTATION!!…read more We stayed here for 5 nights in Aug 2025 and unfortunately our experience was ruined by a persistent roach infestation inside our unit. On the very first night, we killed six live roaches indoors. Over the next two days, we encountered several more inside--including one crawling near my foot while we were eating at the kitchen table--which terrified my children. We also saw many on the patio, along with ants along the wall near the sliding doors. We were unable to use the patio or keep the doors open for fresh air. Management sent pest control to spray, but the cockroach sightings continued. They offered less than 10% partial compensation, but it didn't make up for losing the ability to relax or feel comfortable in the unit for the majority of our stay. We understand Hawaii has tropical insects, but this went far beyond the occasional sighting. This was a recurring and disruptive issue that affected our enjoyment of the vacation. Management said it's "normal" for Hawaii. Well, I've been coming to Hawaii for decades and I can confidently say this is a bad infestation because I have never before experienced anything like this. Especially at resort (supposedly) of this caliber and price point. And management's response was slow and unsatisfactory. I do NOT recommend this resort. Proceed with caution--especially if considering a ground-level unit.

I am no stranger to the Big Island, this is my 5th time here this year. I am here at least twice a year. My mom is from Hilo and her entire family is here. This is the only rental or hotel I have stayed at on the Island that has had roaches inside the unit. The property was beautiful, very nicely appointed and clean, except for the roaches. When we started using the kitchen there were roaches. I moved the trash can from under the sink and spotted the first one. We sprayed it and other roaches scattered. The spray only slowed them enough to get them with a newspaper. I called and emailed the host. She said someone would bring traps and have the service come. The traps were delivered and placed under the sink. She said the service would be by later, but no one came. The next day, my sister had to kill a roach in her room, my son killed a roach in his sister's bed and the downstairs shower. My daughter opened the dishwasher and saw at least 10 roaches scatter. Before we left we made a video and sent to the host. I really felt as if I was being blown off as if I was just a complainer and my concerns about the roaches were unwarranted. Not what I expected from a "Luxury Property".

The valet and reception staff are beautiful, elegant, friendly, upscale. Borrow a cute Mauna Lani bike for free and ride over to the market or the Fairmont for some daytime snorkeling. The gym is well appointed and has a great water machine. The breakfast buffet is well worth the $60pp value. I think I ate enough sashimi to shut up about sashimi prices for a while. Their açaí bowl with house made granola is to die for. Most memorable was making friends with Viola, Hawaii's most valuable Tutu (grandma) at Halani. Her aloha spirit just blessed our entire trip with sunshine and love. I also got to meet Les from the kitchen at Halani and learn about Taro farming! I will forever consider them my new friends from the islands.

On the negative side, it is a looooooooooong walk. Literally a 1/2 mile from the valet to the Ocean Tower. There is a tram, but if you miss it, you could be waiting over a 1/2 hour for the next one, and the pace of the tram is less than a modestly paced walk. Luckily, we went from the airport to Costco and we could drop off our box of groceries and case of water with the valet. Otherwise, it would have been a really tough hike to the room. The room itself was nice. Small kitchenette with really dull knives and limited pans and cooking utensils, but there is a blender and rice cooker. The second bedroom had no windows, but the master was great, with a small private balcony and the master bath had a tub and a shower, with a bidet toilet seat.

Friendly visitors came by every morning that we sat outside (clearly well fed by other guests or maybe the employees so they weren't a pest) and occasionally while we grilled. The resort is nice but it's not beachfront and not walkable to a beach. It is close to some shops however there isn't much for groceries or convenience type stores. There also is not an onsite restaurant, there's options at the pools and they are terrible. While it was a decent resort (and quiet!) it just didn't suit us well. So, overall this isn't a negative review but I wouldn't choose to stay here again. 3 stars due to lack of food options, walkability, and although there are 3 pools they are all rather small.

My request for late check out at 4 pm ( perks of Titanium status) has set the tone for an unforgettable stay. The thoughtful gifts, in my spacious and stunning ocean view room are the perfect touch. I am soaking up every moment of my amazing staycation, from check in til we checked out @ 4pm on the dot, creating Mauna Kea memories with the love of my life. I was told I could go to the Mauna Kea and use their tennis and pickleball courts. I wasn't told of a fee. Well evidently u get charged $25 a person to play for an hour. Pickleball courts were totally empty. It was about the experience so I paid. It explains why there were only 2 other people using the courts. This amenity should be free for people staying at ur hotel.

While the situation was stressful at first -- being accused of damaging something that was already broken when we arrived -- I appreciate that Malia took the time to listen, review the evidence, and even verify details with one of our witnesses, who confirmed the stool's condition upon our check-in. It's unfortunate that the issue wasn't handled properly from the start, but I'm glad the management ultimately did the right thing. Thank you, Malia, for stepping in to resolve this fairly. For future guests: always document any damage immediately when you arrive -- photos can prevent misunderstandings later.

Once they left we started to "settle in" when we discovered trash from the previous renter had not been removed. We called the front desk and the garbage was collected in less than five minutes. As we continued to get situated we noticed that condo had not been cleaned very well. Then we found a bowl of won-tons in the microwave. All of the dishes were dirty. The front desk was notified, said was too late to clean the unit at that time but assured me that a thorough cleaning would occur the next day. The normal cleaning fee at departure was agreed to be waived. A few minutes later housekeeping returned to the unit, apologized, and worked very hard to clean the unit. They even replaced the rice cooker that had been ruined by a previous tenant which we had not yet checked. After an initial missed step, the management worked hard to get things tight courteously and professionally. However, while the furniture was in better shape than many condo rentals, serious updating needs to occur. Toilet seats were clean but worn, dishwasher has not been installed properly, appliances are mis-matched and dated, kitchen cabinets need replacing and the list goes on and on. Yes, I would stay at this property again but I would need assurances that the unit I rent will be in much better shape than Unit 307. Personally, I believe Aston management should refuse to rent unit 307 until it is renovated by the owner.

We had a little hiccup with our outbound flight from LA and therefore arriving later than expected. We called the hotel and learned that their offices close at 9pm, but they e-mailed us detailed instructions on how to get into our condo after business hours. I am pleased to say, that we had no issues getting to hour condo and upon arrival were pleasantly surprised that we were upgraded to a spacious 2 bedroom/ 2 bathroom condo instead of 1/1 we paid for. At first, it felt like we traveled back in time and landed in 80s, it's an older property and they did very little to upgrade the décor. But, the hotel is clean and very well looked after; the grounds are beautiful and offer all the amenities for an enjoyable stay. Having a kitchen is great, but having a nice spacious patio on top of that to enjoy your meal in is even better! The kitchen is fully equipped with mostly everything you need to prepare a meal. If you don't have something, just call the front desk and they will deliver it to you (we needed a can opener and it was dropped off within 15 min). The property also has barbeque areas (outside your unit); we tried them out several times. Dishwasher, washer and dryer are available in the unit. While we were happy with our stay, there are some things I'd like to mention for those of you who consider staying here. We had a little issue with our kitchen - little ants running all over the counter the first two days. We called the front desk and they promptly sent a handyman to take care of the issue. And we saw no more ants thereafter! The pool... is very small; water in the Jacuzzi was not hot, it was the same temperature as the pool. While it didn't matter to us very much (we enjoyed the abundance of gorgeous nearby beaches), take that into consideration if you plan to stay at the hotel for the most part of your trip and like to hang by the pool. Cleaning service: our unit was cleaned only once during our stay and I use "cleaned" loosely. The bed was made and towels refreshed, but not much else. When we called the front desk, we were explained that if you book your stay as a regular hotel room, they'll clean it every day. But if you book through time share exchange service as we did, your unit gets cleaned only once a week (Wednesdays, although ours was cleaned on Tuesday). Tennis courts - no lights after sun set... so we only got to play once since we were out and about most of the day. Lighting overall in the Waikoloa resort area is pretty bad, we tried to go for a walk one evening and turned around since some areas had no lights at all. The hotel is not an ocean front property; it takes about 10-15 minutes to get to the ocean (but not the beach). There is a beach by the Mariott, but that's a bit of a walk and there are by far better beaches just a little bit north (Wailea/Beach 69, Hapuna, Mauna Kea). All in all, I would recommend this hotel to someone who would like to stay at a reasonably priced condo, but doesn't plan to spend a lot of time in their unit. If you are on the Big Island to explore, this is a great place to have breakfast at on a patio and grill some ahi or beef steak for dinner. If you are a golfer, perhaps you'll be out on the field and this will work for you as well. But if you are planning to spend most of your days by the pool, you can probably find a place with a better and bigger one. And last but not least, I'd like to mention that front desk has been very helpful during our stay. They were very knowledgeable, helped us make Valentine's dinner reservations the day before, and booked a snorkeling cruise. They even lent us beach chairs and umbrellas as well as flippers; some guests leave that stuff behind and if it's available they'll let you borrow it at no cost. I would consider staying here again, but that may not happen for awhile... Maui and Kauai next!
