Are you wanting a relaxing day with minimal crowds? Go to Molokai then...just kidding. This beach has a basic bathroom and limited parking. Shade is plentiful at Beach 69 with all the trees. Bring a hammock and enjoy the day. Fishing is okay on the shoreline but there is competition with swimmers. Snorkeling is okay, you see fish small to medium size. Bottom is mostly rock so not great for walking and wading in the ocean. Depth is about 2-6' for about 40' then gets deeper. read more

This is one of my favorite beaches in Hawaii, but I was sad when we showed up and the parking meter was broken, so instead of paying a little hourly rate they were making everyone buy the day pass for $30. We paid it none the less, and we enjoyed our day snorkeling, swimming, tanning, picnicking and interacting with the local chickens. It's a very family friendly beach with lots of little kids laughing and families playing in the sand. This beach is unique because of how close the trees come to the water creating little amphitheaters of seating under the shade. While it makes for minimal spots for people, it is so relaxing and paradise-making to get one of the spots. read more

I love this beach. It's quiet, small, secluded. It has parking. It can get busy on weekends. Family friendly. Kids jump off the rocks. Lots of trees for shade. Snorkeling is OK. Depends on conditions. I've only seen it good, but some friends say it can get a little murky. Super relaxing. When I go here, I stay all day. It's my happy place. Zone out. Chill. Relax. not good for small kids . the beach has sand but in and near water is vary rocky. also, its kind of rough. lots of trees for shade. but, vary small beach. thus, gets crowded quick. sand is soft , super sticky and some places ( closer to water) gritty and rocky. On our last day in Kona we decided to stop by a different beach we hadn't been to so we can watch the sunset and beach 69 didn't disappoint! We really wish we had brought our swimsuits and towels to stay longer and enjoy vs. just stopping by. There weren't many people, lots of open space, and very pretty. They do have a machine where you pay $10 per car and $5 pp. I would definitely put this on your list to visit, a lot less crowded vs. Hapuna beach. read more

Part of Hapuna so unless you're a local, expect to pay the $25 for parking. Lots of shade but sandy area is kind of small. I checked it out before paying and decided to head up to Hapuna where there is lots of sand to lay out for the day. read more

Nice beach and lots of good snorkeling. Highly recommend wearing water shoes if you have them because even the entry is a bit rocky. Lots of shade trees but the beach is relatively small and narrow so not a ton of room to set up for the day and picnic or anything. Non-residents are $5/pp and then $5/car, I believe. read more

After looking up "best places to snorkel on the big island" and then going to several of those places we also randomly googled "places to snorkel nearby" and found this place. Surprise! This place turned out to be my favorite snorkeling spot of the trip. The 25 dollar parking fee (which also grants you access to nearby Hapuna beach) helps to deter large crowds which is a definite plus. Entry/exit is super easy as you just swim in from the sandy beach. Lots of fishes and coral starting maybe 20 ft from the shore. Highly recommended snorkeling area if you are on the big island read more

7/1/22: This beach had lots of sea life when we went, which made it fun for snorkeling. I got to see a turtle swim by me and so many colorful fish of all sizes. I feel I saw more sea life here than the $120 snorkel excursion I paid for 2 days earlier. I appreciated how there was enough sand space in the water unlike other beaches I had visited, Which were filled with sharp rocks as soon as entering the water. It is best to wear water shoes, for the fishes are mainly surrounding the rocks, BUT I feel it's not a must. Just stay floating when ever over the rocks. Waves were calm on our visit, clear enough and warm. We arrived about 3pm and wasn't too crowded. Enough shade provided by the trees, didn't need to use my umbrella. I had read on one post that after 2pm there was no parking or entrance fee... so we didn't pay parking and had no ticket when we left at 6:30pm. Showers are located right at the exit, steps away from the parking. read more

This was my favorite beach in the Waikoloa Beach Resort area. It's on the smaller side, but it's not very crowded. This is probably the biggest reason why I love it. It's also a great place to snorkel. We brought equipment from our Airbnb and really enjoyed the snorkeling. There were a large variety of fish and I even saw a sea turtle. It is a pretty rocky beach which is what makes for good snorkeling, but it doesn't make for the best swimming. There's several trees on the beach which means there's shade to relax in. Parking within the gate is $5 like all state parks. There's also a hot malasadas truck at the corner of this road and the highway. Stop there as well! I'd definitely recommend checking out this beach if you're in the area! read more

Great beach! Super pretty trees. It was stressful with three little kids as the trees create kind of alley ways for your access to the beach. Very shady. Lots of great spots to plop down and read a book. There were lots of waves the day we were there so we didn't snorkel. Thinking about coming back to snorkel sometime soon. read more

Warning!!! I've been coming to this beach for years! But, it has changed drastically. A big flash flood in May 2024, brought tons of lava stones and I heard a couple more recent storms brought more. The pristine white sand that was void of rocks is no more! Also, since Park n Rec resided to advertise this gem by putting up a huge sign advertising it as part of Hapuna beach system, crowds come! Snorkeling was amazing. It's a little rocky and a bit choppy though. Not great for young children. Be sure to take a snorkeling vest if you aren't a strong swimmer. read more

Nice hidden beach with some picnic tables near the front (we ate our Foodland lunch here before finding a spot on the beach). They have bathrooms and showers too near the parking lot. Down at the beach, there is shade and the walk isn't far. You have lots of options in both directions for finding a spot to pitch your towel and relax. read more

Beautiful beach just to the left of Hapuna but on the same turnout on the highway. The best thing about this beach is that the trees go all the way to the water and provide shade as well as some great scenery. The swimming can be complicated a bit by the rocks so bring water shoes if you plan on wading. As of January 2022 the parking for tourists has gotten pretty steep! $10 for the car and $5 a person. So if you're not going to spend a significant bit of time here it may not be worth it. read more

We visited many beaches while on the Big Island for 8 days in August, 2021. Beach 69 is by far our favorite. It is beautiful/shady/easy to get to. My daughter even had her senior photos made on this beach. Pictures definitely do not do justice! The water is just amazing! read more

Lots of shade. Bring your water shoes due to the rocks. Great place to snorkel and see lots of fish.

This beach is beautiful with nice shade trees and even some picnic tables, shower, and bathroom facilities. There is a lava formation just off the water that is nice to snorkel when the water is calm but can be quite tricky in the winter. Lots of lava rocks on the shoreline that you can get knocked into by waves if you turn your back. So please don't do that Also to the north is a nice small sandy beach where swimmers can hang out when it's calm and surfers go when it's not. Parking is $5 for non-Hawaiians and is not on the honor system, as someone else mentioned. They do patrol the lot occasionally to see, so don't try it. The beach gets a bit crowded at times but go early for the best snorkeling and you will be finished before the crowds arrive. It really is beautiful. Most of the coral is dead now. It is sad. We did see a reef shark there once while snorkeling. read more

Great beach for toddlers - we didn't see any turtles, but there was lots to see in the tide pools and rocks: sea urchins, crabs, fish and hermit crabs. Lots of trees too to shade the little ones from the sun while they play with sand. This beach is in a sheltered bay, so the waves are smaller! read more

SHADE!! This is a rare find in Hawaii- the trees along the beach allow for perfect shade. The beach is almost divided into three smaller beaches- two areas great for snorkeling, close in and crystal clear water, as well as another that was more for swimming or relaxing in a tube. Parking was very limited even though we got there at 9am midweek. There is a fee to park (but the machine was broken so we were told no augment was needed) and a bathroom near the parking lot. This is not a wide expansive beach like Hapuna and is up crowded (likely due to the limited parking) but a must-visit if you're in Waikaloa or nearby. read more

Another gorgeous beach on the Big Island. It's a little hard to find as there are no signs, but it's basically adjacent to Hapuna, to the south-side. It's not the largest beach, but the sand is perfect, and there are plenty of interesting rocks when you get out a few hundred feet from shore, so it's a great area to see some neat fish in a protected area. The trees offer great shade and places to hang bags, etc. We came back here a few times during our stay. There is a $5 fee to park in the lot. read more

Very nice beach near Hapuna, but less crowded and has shade. The parking lot is really close to the beach as well. There are bathrooms and showers, although the bathroom seems a bit dirty (but what restroom near the beach isn't?). The water is nice and if you snorkel out there is coral reef. It's also a nice spot to float on pool inflatables when it is calm. My friend had her bachelorette 'flotilla' party here recently and reminded me of how much I love this place. read more

Great little beach south of Hapuna Beach. It's part of Hapuna Beah but not connected unless you plan on trekking over rocks. Perfect spot for swimming and snorkeling and lots of parking and shade. Crowds aren't too bad. Grab a bento at Queen's Marketplace and come here to eat and swim. Lots of families and kids. It's cozy and not completely overrun by tourists. Yet. There are bathrooms and a shower to rinse off. Perfect beach by my standards. read more
