Although inaccurately credited to Mahatma Gandhi, "Be the change you want to see in the world," is sort of a summary of a longer Gandhi quote that is basically, "We but mirror the world." Because (as some church billboards attest) I may be the only Bible someone reads, it's important to me to embody the principles outlined in Scripture. Matthew 5:16 reads," In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." In other words, one should live so that others think well of God and live in a manner that inspires others to give glory to God.
The Facebook "Be the Change Movement" "inspires worldwide connection through acts of service and giving back." This is a noble charter.
This notion reminds me of the poem I fell in love with which is wrongly credited to Ralph Waldo Emerson, because it really originated with Bessie A. Stanley.
Regardless, I like the language in the Emerson version, of which this is an excerpt: "What is Success" as attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson
"...To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition,
To have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation,
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived...
This is to have succeeded."
Effect change! Grow that garden, improve the health of others, redeem a social condition, and/or help others to breathe a little easier. Make something that outlasts these short lives we live! read more
