It took time, but by the end of the school year we were amazed at her transformation, and not just in reading. Her confidence seemed to spill over into other areas, and she (unknowingly) was applying her new-found skills to other subjects like math and writing. The director was in touch with my daughter's teacher and met with us regularly to keep us apprised of progress. I was surprised that my daughter never seemed to mind going, seeing as she was attending 4 sessions a week. I was worried she'd be overwhelmed, but she never complained. She is now ready to start 6th grade in a couple weeks and I am confident in her ability to make the transition.

Ms Alice is passionate about ensuring that the students have a solid understanding of the foundational math concepts. I say that out of my own personal experience. I know because of the Kumon Math Program, our older one was always placed in an advanced math course(s) in Middle and High school. They constantly encouraged our daughter to maintain a Kumon routine (like brushing your teeth everyday) despite her school work load and a very hectic after-school competitive synchro swim schedule. They worked very closely with our daughter to adjust her Kumon work as and when needed. Thanks to their constant encouragement and personal attention, our older one completed all of the Kumon Math levels by the time she started her High School sophomore year. Now I see the same level of commitment to our younger one (In 6th grade - middle school). My younger one has tried to quit a few times, especially when she is moved to the next math level. Each time, Ms Alice will take out a considerable amount of time to speak with our younger one to assess the root cause and then find a creative way to create a win-win option.

In addition, we would be out of town for half the classes. I thought we could make it work with makeup classes, but logistically even the makeup options were not readily available and not guaranteed. As a result, I asked to cancel her enrollment and receive a partial refund. I was informed that if the class is canceled before the first class, then we get a 50% refund. I asked them how are we supposed to know if it's a good fit until the student attends one class? In the end, they refused to refund us, and I have to say I'm extremely unhappy with this service. Their business philosophy seems to be, "Once we have your money we don't care if it doesn't work out for your child, we're not giving it back." This is not a great long-term business approach. I have spoken to other parents and they've had similar experiences. I highly do not recommend.

For the lower grades, traditional Chinese characters and ZhuYin are taught. They also teach math at much higher level than the local Cupertino public schools. Even their once-a-week English class is at a higher level than public school's. The staff really treat the kids and parents like family. We wish this school is an all day school rather than just an afterschool program.
