We found this jewel of a property while on a walkabout, somewhat dejectedly (at least on my part)…read morefrom the hotel we'd found on Priceline: The Coast Harbourside. It's a little box, mid-century modern, with all of its rooms facing the Sound, and the Olympic Range, on three floors. We had the opportunity to stay here on our return to Victoria, following a trip up-island, and we were not disappointed. One day morphed into three, and while our last night was in a different room, we were still happy to be there. The place is very clean (no stains on the carpet as with the Westin, Seattle). The original family still runs the place. The decor, which runs from varnished wood to grandma's floral bed spreads doesn't quite fit the Modern aesthetic, but it works. Besides, it's the view that holds your attention and there are balconies. There are kitchenettes, and they are well-enough stocked with cookware to prepare a meal. My recommendation is to request a room on the end (We had 307) as they are larger than the rooms in between and they also have windows on both sides. And, unlike the CH, they have wireless internet access in-room, AND at no extra charge (like the Westin, Seattle). It's also easy to access. The hotel is an easy 20 minute walk from the Black Ball and Express ferry terminals, and five minutes more to the Empress and Parliament, on flat ground. There is a major supermarket, and two state booze stores within a ten minute walk, two blocks over (I wish I could recommend some Canadian wines, but what we saved in hotel tariff, we wasted on overpriced lightweight wines). We caught the Via train to Courtenay (not one of the world's great train trips) and easily made it there in the thirty minutes we allowed. I love this place, and consider it my Victorian getaway. If you take a float plane from Seattle, you'll only make your trip all the more romantic.

Nestled in a quaint residential area, with the ocean for a neighbour, the Surf Motel is a vacationer's paradise. This small treasure of a motel was built in 1960 by Hans Peter Mangelsen and is still operated as a family business. We're within walking distance of Victoria's famous Inner Harbour, the lush and beautiful Beacon Hill Park, and many other exciting attractions. Enjoy a stroll along the oceanfront cliffs, or better yet go fly a kite!

Fancy Nancy is a 1954 Cadillac. Dale spent about five minutes asking us what we wanted to do with our limited time in Victoria. We came up with a plan and then jumped into Fancy Nancy and off we went. Dale is familiar with the area and gave us a nice overview tour of the city. We opted to go to the Butchart Garden and he waited with the car while we toured. Then after our tour of the Butchart Garden we headed back to town. Then we were able to Craigdarroch Castle . It was closed but Dale did a wonderful job giving us the history of the building and the family. Then we headed to Government Street right in front of the Empress Hotel for views of the Hotel and the Parliament Building. Dale gave us more history of the harbor, the Parliament Building and the Empress hotel while numerous people came up and asked him about Fancy Nancy. Then, sadly it was time to return to port. Dale parked Fancy Nancy in a way we were able to get a picture of her and our cruise ship in the back ground. One of my favorite pics of the day. Overall a fantastic afternoon. It was a perfect way to maximize our time in the city. It was myself, my husband and my 78 year old father. This was the highlight of our Alaska cruise for my dad. He tells everyone about Fancy Nancy. Victoria will be on our short list to come back when we have more time to explore. We more than likely will hire Classic Car again to show us around. Thank you Dale and Fancy Nancy for a wonderful trip and memories.

His family has lived there for four generations, so he really knows his stuff. He also offered to take lots of pictures of the two of us at the most scenic spots along the tour, and the pics all came out great. Thanks for making our trip unforgettable, Larry! -Zack & Maddie
