the Bayview Bridge is a cable-stayed takes US24 over the Mississippi and out of Illinois in the least offensive manner possible with the road deck splitting the uprights. built in 1986 for a modest $30M to serve westbound traffic the 4500-foot bridge comes complete with four-color lighting!!
east bound traffic uses the older and cooler neighboring Soldier's Memorial Bridge dating from 1930. it is still structurally sound but not really up to handling forecast volumes so it'll be gone sooner rather than later. originally a toll bridge it has been a free crossing since 1945, the new bridge will of course be "free" but y'all will be paying for it forever... read more
