Our room was run down! Old carpet, beds were uncomfortable! The bathroom was a nightmare! One Teeny tiny bar of soap for the sink and the shower. No shampoo in the shower! Found that out too late! We booked a 5-day stay at the Baymont by Wyndham in Dubuque, Iowa through a third-party booking agency. We knew that if we cancelled, we would be responsible for payment. We checked in on Friday, August 29. As we moved into the room, we noticed a couple of things that concerned us, but nothing by itself that would cause us to move. The side door to the facility had key card access but the reader was either damaged or purposely disabled and the door did not lock so provided no security. Also, in our room, the security chain/tab was broken and added no additional security. We decided to just place a chair in front of the door while we slept. Unfortunately, this did not keep out all of our visitors. Early Saturday morning we were awakened by something on our face which we just thought was a fly. We turned on the light and found a cockroach crawling across our bed. We captured it and killed it and took it to the front desk. We decided to check out. Though this was a non-cancellable reservation we believed that we deserved a clean and safe room, and we had not been provided with that and therefore we requested a refund for the rest of the reservation. The clerk said that since we had booked through and paid a third-party booking agency, we would have to go back through that agency to get a refund. We called the booking agency and told them what had happened, and they said that they would contact the motel and see if they could get us a refund. The agency called us back and said that the motel refused to give any kind of refund. We provided the agency with additional information about the stay and a photo of the roach. They contacted the motel again but were unable to obtain any kind of refund from the motel. The booking agency did give us a partial refund because we were a long time customer of theirs, but it was significantly less than what we paid for the reservation. My recommendation is to never stay at the Baymont motel in Dubuque, Iowa and I personally will not stay in any Baymont hotel. read more

I was on a spontaneous trip with my son. We ended up in Galena, IL and didn't want to drive back to Rockford after dinner so I used an app on my phone to find a hotel room for the night and the Baymont was the closest hotel that was reasonably priced with availability. Upon arrival and checking in the woman at the desk told me that I reserved a room with one queen sized bed, but she had a room with two queens she would put my son and I into that was available. I was very appreciative of the upgrade... and I believe my son was too. He tosses and turns and I snore. This isn't a fancy hotel. It's clean, the beds are comfortable, it's someplace to lay your head to move on to someplace else. My only issues where that the door was kind of hard to open and close as it seems to have swollen in the door. The shower had almost no water pressure. Other than that it did exactly what we wanted it to do... let us sleep for the night. read more

The bottom of pool had large patches that were down to cement. Very rough. Would not let children play in there. Would scrape up their feet. Breakfast only had cereal, toast and waffles. If I could give this dump 0 stars I would. It is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. The room was dark and dingy, the T.V. only had a few channels, the mini fridge was banged up with dents all over it and it didn't get cold at all. Our pop was still warm after being in there. The table/desk in our room had a big hunk knocked off so they turned it towards the wall. The ice machine in the hall was broken, the microwave was dirty and from the 70's. There was no clock in the room. The toilet was a tight squeeze in between the tub and sink, your elbows touched the sink and shower curtain. The toilet seat was all scratched up. The faucet on the sink was set too far back and you couldn't wash your hands without touching the back of the sink. The shampoo, conditioner, and lotion in the bathroom were half used. The front desk manager Kim was very rude and unhelpful with everything. The breakfast was waffles from a dirty waffle machine, stale cereal, and two bananas. The coffee was empty. The pool was a small triangle and looked dirty. And on top of all of that the whole hallway by our room had a very strong, very disgusting urine smell. My husband and I were going to stay there two days but left very early in the morning after one night. I had to argue with the manager Kim to get a refund. When I asked her for the number to corporate she said she didn't have one but, she turned around in the same breath and told me she would have to contact them about getting a refund. First off, I paid around $130 for a Saturday night stay. NOT WORTH IT. This is more of a $50-$60/night hotel. There is no elevator, which was especially difficult for us as we have a 2 month old baby. Our room was also in the wing off the main hotel, so it was quite a jog. We had a king room, it definitely was not the biggest hotel room we've stayed in. It appeared decently clean but there was an odor almost as if there was too much cleaning product used and wasn't aired out properly. The outlets in the room were loose and wouldn't hold our cell chargers without assistance. BE AWARE THE TOILET SITS VERY LOW!! There is a pool and it was working when we stayed. It is not big by any means maybe the size of 2 hot tubs - but better than nothing. Our room key worked maybe 1 time, thankfully one of us was usually in the room to let the other in. It was frustrating to have to knock on my own hotel room at 4:30 am (with a 2 month old sleeping) after leaving to get something to drink. We went to a family members room for pizza and on our way back there was a strong marijuana presence. I know this isn't something the hotel can necessarily control - I just wanted to include it in my review so people are aware if they are considering staying here with children. Also be aware my husband used his card at the pop machine and he was charged $2.60 for what was advertised as a $1.50 pop. It was not listed that there was a $1.10 fee. Overall we will NOT stay at this hotel again and I would not recommend it to anyone..unless you're paying $50 or less. I will give it this - it was pretty clean, and the manager was very nice. I felt a bit bad for her, honestly, because she was there when we checked in, she was there when we returned from getting a nighttime snack, and she was there at breakfast at 6:30 in the morning. I don't know when she isn't working, but she worked hard and was pleasant to take care of all the people checking in at the same time. However! There was no elevator, which honestly I was shocked by. Also the doorway into the hotel, and from the lobby into the hallways were very small, and it was really hard to navigate. The hotel only has one luggage cart, and a group of elderly travelers came right ahead of us, so we obviously let them have it and just had to traipse back and forth. Again, the room was clean but it was worn-down (actually, that describes the whole place). There was torn wallpaper over one bed, and a large rip in the side of the fitted sheet. The sheets and towels were very thin - you could tell they had been washed and used for years and years. The bathroom was tiny - the sink was minuscule, and the toilet and bathtub were very low. The wi-fi was terrible; when it worked, it ran incredibly slowly, and the next morning it went out and wouldn't come back. The breakfast options were pretty sparse, also. The rooms are big. The pillows are big and the beds are comfortable. The pool is small, but not bad. At the opposite end of the building there is a sauna. I wasn't sure how I would like that, but since they don't have a jacuzzi I gave it a try. It's very relaxing. It's not right by the pool, but that didn't bother me. I have to give 5 stars because it only cost $80 to stay here making it a very good choice. There is a small bar in the hotel but I didn't go there. read more

This was the worst hotel experience of my life. The building smelled like smoke, of the cigarette and weed kind, the service was particularly awful. Stained sheets, stained carpets, variety of hairs all over the bathroom. After the power had been down for 4 hours due to a local issue (local, as in the hotel), we left to a lovely Holiday Inn just down the street at the same price with functioning WiFi, clean rooms, and a courteous staff. I returned the next day to settle up the bill, they had charged us for the entire stay, despite our leaving after a night instead of the four we were hoping too. Then, they had charged us twice for the stay, even though they assured there was only a single charge. When I returned to get the amount refunded, the manager played coy and said he would send out the refund via check. It never came. After several weeks of calling, I showed up in the hotel and demanded my $300. The manager said he'd be right back with the money he owed and then disappeared. He, "Sunny," literally left out the back door instead of refunding his duplicate charge after having admitted fault. I worked to file a small claims suit, but the hotel is run by a shell business with another LLC covering it. AM Hotels, AMBA MA Hotels, and a couple of others scattered throughout the area. So when I would file a suit against one holder, the response would come from one of the other registered LLCs claiming ownership. The whole thing was a terrible and awful mess that, after a year of fighting and filing from afar, I just gave up. Honestly, it's worth the $300 just to never have to step inside the building again. This hotel accepted money for my reservation, refused to honor the reservation, and refused to refund the money. Here is how it happened. I made a reservation through Expedia for my girlfriend, at a cost of $184. She arrived in the evening, but Kim R rudely refused to honor the reservation I made, because my girlfriend was using my credit card. I had to make a reservation elsewhere, with few options, and I paid $278 for that. Both charges showed up on my credit card bill, so I called the hotel, and the same person, Kim R, first insisted the traveler had not shown up, then acknowledged that she had, but insisted they did not steal from me because I paid a third party, not the hotel directly. She snarkily offered to refund the $0.00 I had paid her. So I contacted Expedia, which contacted the hotel, which refused to refund Expedia because my reservation was "nonrefundable." Never mind that it was also a "reservation." This is nothing less than corporate theft. read more

I wouldn't stay here again, and should have taken the advice of the Yelper before me. I checked in at 3:00, grabbed my bags, and went to my room. The door was wide open, the bedding was in a pile on the mattress, and towels were piled on the floor. I checked the nearby rooms and they were all in the same condition. I returned to the front desk to inform them and they told me to come back in an hour or so. I was away for two and a half hours before returning, this time to find housekeeping cleaning my room. The gal made a comment against the front desk or manager--apparently there were 15 check-outs that day and she was the only one turning over the rooms. She called the front desk, asked to put me in a room across the hall that was ready, and I went to the front desk to have my keys changed. It was a pain in the ass, unprofessional, and very unorganized. I understand that mistakes and mix-ups happen. But seriously? Why assign me to one of the 15 rooms that need to be turned over? I was never offered an upgrade or any compensation for their mistake, and I was too upset and tired to deal with it any further. All of that put quite a damper on my impression of the hotel, but the rest of my stay was decent. Comfortable beds and pillows, functioning TV and air conditioner, plenty of hot water. Apparently I arrived on the right day! Unlike many of the comments by my fellow Yelp folks, I had a good experience, mostly due to a very helpful Alicia at the front desk. We arrived several hours before check in time, and were still able to get placed in a clean room (after a measly 5 minute wait) and were able to get ready for our event. The room did have a bit of a just been cleaned smell to it that we aired out a bit with the 20 degree outside air, but that is understandable consider our very early check in. The linens were clean, the beds comfortable and the bathroom was clean. There is the convenience of a bar just off of the lobby for those who might appreciate such a venue. Overall, I would give the place an average rating for a motel of this sort. Remember that average is a decent rating. The extra star was due to the customer service! read more

We were unable to check in on time because the room was not cleaned. When we did check in the room smelled musty, we used 1 of our car airfreshner in the AC unit for the smell. They gave my family of 5 two towels and there were no more available so I HAD TO WASH THEIR TOWELS so we could bathe the next morning. We aren't a picky family, we stopped for 1 night in between destinations, but for $160 for one night I should not have had to wash their towels. The pool needs major work also. We were travelling to Galena, IL, but needed an affordable hotel/motel for our stay as our funds were limited. Being 75 a night for 2 queen beds and a free continental breakfast, and free wi-fi, as we needed it for research purposes, we thought we had a good deal. There were a couple glaring issues. First off, The bathroom smelled like someone had lit a match in it, and our room had been cleaned, so we were confused. Next, the heater/fan did nothing but blow COLD air after the first night. We literally froze on our second (and last) night in the room. Our bathtub had broken tiles underneath the water spout, and mold everywhere in the caulking around the spout. YUCK! The water would drip from the knob (which also had signs of mold under the plastic cover), onto the faucet and into the bathtub. There was a screw missing from the place that you would lock the drain (on the tub) and would move completely up, exposing the tub to whatever was in there, and would have to be manually pushed back down to keep the water from entering/exiting the nasty area. The faucet in the bathroom sink leaked all over when turned on... Except for the tv, breakfast, and comfortable beds, I don't think I would ever stay here again. read more

12/24/2012 - 12/29/2012 This was th worst motel that I have ever stayed at!!!! An absolute nightmare! Service sucked, room were outdated, bed sheets had stains, half the plugs in the room didn't work(tried plugging my phone into multiple plugs around the room until I found one that was good), iron leaked horribly. No thermostats on the wall to adjust the temperature accordingly, so half the night was spent getting in and out of bed to adjust th temperature. After the 1st morning, I called down to the front desk about my iron, when I asked them to bring a functioning one to my room, they said I needed to come down an get it. Then, when I was given another iron, they never looked it over... I got it to the room, and was missing one of the two prongs on the plugin. When I finally got a functioning iron, I plugged it in on a plugin which required the light on for it to work, but to no avail, it still did not work...So I had to move the iron and ironing board to a different location. On day to,the toilet broke and would not flush because the plastic chain on the ball was shot. Not a big deal, but these morons built their countertop in the bathroom directly over the back of the toilet, so I had to move rooms. They never bothered to upgrade me, instead the manager at the time took me from room to room with the master key to find one that was clean (completely unprofessional). When they finally found me a room, they never offered to help move my belongings, and the room was probably a good 5 degrees, I literally had to leave the hallway door open for 15 minutes to bring the room up to temperature. It's is as advertised based off of the pictures but I don't see how they can come close to charging $100 a night and above. Total lack of concern by the staff here, and it goes all the way up to the general manager. I had a very small issue and just wanted a phone call back after my stay. My number was taken by the lady at the desk at check out, but I was never called. I called back 2 days later and was dealt with very rudely by a different front desk girl. She told me I would have to call back in an hour when the manager would be there. I called back in 1 hour and 10 minutes and was told (by the same girl) that "He was in but left"...yeah...right. She asked for my name and number and guess what? Still no call back. How does a person that avoids customers get into a general manager position at a hotel? Shame on you Baymont for employing such a person. I do a fair amount of travel and not only will I not stay at ANY Baymont again, I will do my best to avoid Wyndham hotels all together. read more

Hotel room was not as advertised. Walked into the hotel with a group of bikers out front smoking weed. No elevator to the labyrinth to the 2nd floor set of rooms. Outdated room looked like an 80's nursing home rather than the inviting $140 room on the website. Smelled of smoke. Dirty stained carpets. Paper thin walls. Warped doors. Poor water pressure. Room shook because no door woudl close securely and need to be slammed shut. Breakfast looked like a county jail meal instead of an inviting cold/hot buffet as advertised. I would like to start off with saying the room is very nice. Beds are comfortable, bathrooms seem reasonably clean. The continental breakfast was pretty nice...waffle makers, cereal, etc...even had a variety of juice. Now, let's get on to the bad side. The pool is WAY smaller than I thought a pool would be. It's about a foot longer on both sides than a whirlpool that you find alongside a pool at another hotel. The garbage can inside the pool room had thousands (possibly millions) of gnats...everywhere. No towels available after a large group of people go to the pool. The funny part was when I read the sign for maximum capacity of 35 people.....35 PEOPLE?!?!?! You could have 5 large women and no room for a man afterwards. Yes...it's that small. The bar sucks....not many varieties on alcohol nor does the front desk lady (yes, also the bartender) know how to make simple drinks. The pool table I paid $1.00 for only gave me three balls.....when I asked the bartender/front desk lady what happened to the rest...she laughed and told me "yeah, the last couple that played got 7 balls! We don't even know where the cue ball is..." The worst and last part.....my husband and I finally got a chance to get into the pool at around 10pm. We were first hot so we turned the air on and the air that was blowing out smelled gross so then we opened the window and we were right in the front in room 221 and you could smell the people smoking. My 2 grandchildren went to see if there was hot tub and guess what no, its like the size of 2 to 3 rooms and the rooms weren't big. It smelled so we tried to stay out of there so we went to target and hobby lobby. Then we went to go swimming (thought we would at least try) and my granddaughter was freezing, her teeth were chattering. The pool smelled of mold AND skunk.
