This Christmas holiday at moi Ranch nearby, we stopped in & decided to try the Pumpkin Bread as they were out of the sourdough we usually get. We are completely WOWED in love with the Pumpkin bread! Worst apricot anything (including strudel) I have ever had in my life. My husband and I drove to Muenster, Tx to enjoy German food for our 30th wedding anniversary. I am of German heritage and my family has made so many different apricot dishes all my life. This is the worst I have ever had from my family or even any bakery or restaurant of festival across the US or Germany. The crust is very thin - not flaky at all- and rubbery. It tasted like thin shoe leather with no taste. The apricot filling was thin and tasted light or chemical and watered down filling that barely tasted of apricots. My husband, who is not German, (and without knowing my opinion) said it tasted like China got hold of the apricots and infused chemicals. I have tasted better everywhere from local bakeries to festivals that aren't even German. It was a chemical, watered down apricot filling with thin shoe leather like crust. Can't believe anyone would be able to enjoy this. Really can't believe this comes from a German heritage town. To me, this s shameful and we threw it in the trash. read more

This bakery is located within a bustling gas station with limited parking so be ready to feel the rush of the crowd. Luckily a big section of it is self service and to one side, so you can peruse the options before approaching the front counter. They had a few different kinds of kolaches, fried pies, turnovers and strudels in the self service area. They also had a donut counter which had your typical findings and a couple kolaches. I did prefer the kolaches from the self service area to the ones at the donut counter which I found too doughy. The donut holes are some of the largest I've seen and a good price for a dozen. The fried pies, turnovers and apple cheese strudel we tried were all delicious and decadent. At the front counter they will offer to warm up your treats. I wish the strudel was offered by the slice in a similar size to the fried pies just so I could get a bunch of different flavors to try. I think the entire thing is a good deal and it's sooo heavy, I was very happy with the flavor we got! It just would have been more convenient with me being on vacation to have some smaller options to choose from, but I totally respect this is what they sell and I can't see skipping over a stop here when driving past- it's so tasty and not your typical findings that you will find at your local bakery by a mile! No trip to Muenster is complete without a stop here for fresh strudels in a variety of flavors. We have been coming here for our holiday strudels for decades, and that's because (1) it's fun to do a food pilgrimage and (2) these strudels are WORTH IT! Of course they have all the traditional fruit flavors, and the "modern" fruit and cheese cheese ones. As part of the Fischer's Meat Market trip, we spotted this place. Then we saw the same strudel for sale at Fischer's. Rather than buy at Fischer's, we decided to hit the source on the way back. We're glad we did. More flavors than I was expecting (see photo). Thuy let me choose, so I went with apricot. When we ate it, very tasty. It's canned apricot, so a tad sweet. Texas has an intresting culture of very unique food places in small towns attached to gas stations - and this German bakery in Munster is no exception. Munster is a small one lane town with a coupe of traffic lights surrounded by windmill farms. If you blink you'll miss it. Here you pull into one of the only Exxon gas stations and inside there is a German Bakary where they make fresh strudel daily in almost a dozen flavors. Tried the more traditional apple cheese strudel. The flavor of the fresh apples with a hint of spice and the creaminess of the cheese is just incredible. Not too sweet, the freshness and the delicate flavor of the pastry come just shine. An absolutely divine treat. Totally worth the stop. read more

This is not a bakery. It is an Exxon gas station store with a few baked goods from somewhere else. The only strudel they have are full size and cost $14.99. It was way too big for us to get. I'm surprised they don't have slices for sale, since that's their thing. There is a bakery case with some baked goods, but they are common cookies, brownies, donuts and lemon bars that you can get at any gas station store. The guy working there didn't know how much anything was, and didn't know anything about the bakery items the place is supposedly famous for. They had a few wrapped kolaches, meats and cheeses from Fischers grocery store in town, but the rest of the store had the usual Doritos, beer and soft drinks you find all along the highway. We. were in Muenster to pick up our butchered beef side and stopped here for the famous chicken pepper balls. (Addicting) What we found was also and awesome bakery and purchased a cheese streudel which was out of this world. There are many fruit and cream cheese options and they stay in fridge well and heat up into the microwave well. Flaky pastry, sugar, fruit, heaven! If you are near here- go here! read more

I can remember the first time I had a donut from Bayers. I thought it was the best one I'd ever had. That was in 1980. I bought two dozen for my team at work yesterday. I was SO glad some are left. They're still the best. They have apricot filled. I love apricot and have never seen that anywhere else. They make a variety of cookies. They're all good, but the chocolate chip is my favorite. The crust on the fried pies is donut dough. Yum! Their strudel is great no matter which flavor you like. Then there are the chicken balls. Little round pieces of ground chicken and ground jalapeno goodness with the perfect seasoning. I'm not gonna lie, they're pretty hot. I'm not a huge fan of hot foods, but these are the exception. I get a couple every time I stop in. They also carry locally made sausages and other convenience store-type foods. Their selection of drinks is good. And they sell gas, too. I've always loved Muenster. It's a unique little town with wonderful people. Bayer's is one more reason to love it. read more

Their big selection of German strudel is all authentic and made from an old family recipe. I had some in Munich and it was exactly the same. I especially love the apple (apfel) but there are many flavors to pick from. Fischer's Meat Market there in Muenster also carries Bayer's strudel. It is worth a trip to this little German town just for this bakery. read more

Disappointed that I could only buy strudel in a whole size, instead of a piece like a doughnut. Doughnuts were ok, nothing great.

Nice little gas staion/bakery that was having a "grand re-opening" on my visit. Cheap sodas. Only offer sausage kolaches, no fruit. Meh. Didn't hold a candle to the ones in West, or for that matter, the ones at my local donut place in Dallas. Pretty good fried pies. Although they claim to be a bakery, I saw no evidence that they bake anything "on site." Didn't try any of the donuts or other bakery case items, but I did get a couple of strudels - one apricot and one cheese. Have only eaten the apricot. Filling was good, but was totally underwhelmed by the crust, which was hard and tough and pretty tasteless. Also burned in places. And smelled funny - like they used real lard instead of Crisco? But I couldn't see or smell this when I bought it, as they are packaged in opaque white bags. Pretty disappointing. If the cheese is better I'll update my review. Final analysis: Would stop there if I found myself needing gas or snacks while in the area, but not a destination in and of itself. (Which is kind of my take on all of Muenster: cute, worth an hour or two, but not worth going out of your way for.) read more

Hubby and I decided to go for a drive one early summer morning and stumbled upon the Texas version of Solvang--the small town of Muenster. (Remember, I said it's the Texas version so don't roll on in thinking it looks anything like it does in California--it doesn't, and is much, MUCH smaller). HOWEVER, there is an incredible find in this small town in the middle-of-nowhere Texas, and that find is Bayers Kolonialwaren. HOLY SMOKES THIS PLACE HAS GREAT PASTRIES AND FRIED PIES!!!! Now as much as Ms. Jones would love to tell you the atmosphere of this little gem matches the delicious, sweet flakiness of the culinary delights Bayers offers, sadly, it doesn't--stop in and pick up some goodies for the road...you will be SO glad you did. Not an overwhelming selection of goodies, but what they have is GREAT! In fact, this place is so good that we plan on driving back to try a few more things. Strudel, haystacks, doughnuts and the best fried pies in Texas were on the menu the day we visited--I can't wait to see what's on the menu next time.
