We have tried on several occasions over a 2-year time period to set an appointment on animals posted for adoption. No one answers the phone. We have tried on several occasions to visit in person over a 2-year time period to view animals and no one is around during posted hours. Today, a miracle! We talked to a lady exiting the gate who rudely said you must set an appointment. She did not know I was calling the number while my husband was talking to her. He noticed she looked at the phone ringing. She ignored the calls. It is our belief this "adoption center" is not amiable to adopting out the captured pets. We hope they are not unnecessarily euthanizing animals. read more

My mom and dad were avid dog lovers. When my dad passed, my mom found the companionship of 2 rescue shelter dogs, which she dearly loved. Upon her death in late 2015, she wanted me to donate money to a Galveston County no-kill shelter and I picked Bay Area Pet Adoptions. They were so kind. I explained her last wishes, and how she wanted the money donation spent; money to assist senior adopters adopt preferably senior companion pets. (senior for seniors) They published a picture of my mom and her dog online with a very sweet article of things I had shared, which I really appreciated! And then, as each elderly person came and adopted a pet, they were kind enough to send me a picture of the adopter and the dog they adopted. I don't remember now how many they sent, but to this day, 10 years later, I still remember the kindness and how they respected my mom's wishes! I will say, she also left money to one of the largest no-kill shelters in the USA in another state. They were not as appreciative and were not as eager to use the funds the way she wanted. This taught me a lot. Small shelters run by tireless dog lovers is a passion they have in their blood. We visited this shelter a couple of times. The first time, we were releasing a puppy that had been displaced during the hurricane flooding. He wasn't our puppy but the owner just couldn't bear to take him, so we did it for her. They were so kind to us. The second time I visited was three months after my dog died. I needed puppy energy. We told them why we were there and they brought two dogs in to us to play with: Monty and Sally. I loved them both. I'm not ready for a dog right now. But they were so kind to me. They talked to me and listened to me talk about my dog Jake who had died. They told me I could come play with the puppies any time. The facility is spotlessly clean. The dogs get to play in the yards. They get fed twice daily. The kennels are open to fresh air but enclosed and covered from the elements. The dogs all seem happy and when they come inside, they look to the people in there with happy eyes and waggy tails. This is currently the only no kill shelter in Galveston County. Wheelchair access is excellent. There are sidewalks throughout the facility and concrete for the kennels. Adopt, don't shop. Shelters have amazing dogs who need love! Some are already potty trained! I usually don't write negative reviews, if my service was bad I just figure that maybe the place or individual had a off day...we all do sometimes. I went to this shelter to find a local addition to our family. The volunteers were great and with minimal help found us a pup. The review process was improperly applied and unprofessional in my view. I don't have to sell myself but were excellent pet owners and have been for decades and I do understand that many people shouldn't own pets but these guys are way off in the proper process. 1) You don't set someone up with a potential pet by informing them their the only applicant or first applicant. 2)You don't drag the process for 3 days plus, they contacted my vet the first day and should have made a decision then. 3) You can't justify that a family with small children is better suited. You don't know my extended family or life well enough to make that judgment. 4) When asking how my previous pets died, and I tell you of "old age" to keep probing as to how how exactly...dude really. 5) Calling me the next day (after posting on the web site that the pup was adopted the day before) is really poor. I don't even know what to say to that lack of professional procedure. Its no wonder private pet adoption clinics are a success. I for one, will not refer this place to anyone looking for any pet. I have adopted my last two dogs here over a span of nearly twenty years. This is the only no kill shelter in Galveston county. It is so nice to see the dogs running with their friends in the play yards instead of being cooped up 24/7. The people who work here truly care for the animals and it shows. I adopted a cat in October 2023. They gave her all her shots and microchipped her, but they didn't deworm her. She was very sick and was bleeding from her anal area due to severe parasites. They left her in that box for 3 months to suffer. Her extremely foul smelling fecal matter was a classic sign of parasites. She had a potbelly which is also a classic sign of parasites. They told me she had a tendency to over eat. She had 4 different parasites which were draining her of nutrition. That's why she was starving all the time. It wasn't the $600.00 in Vet bills that upset me. It was the suffering my new baby endured needlessly. I called and the girl argued with me and tried to justify their negligence. Gracie came to the shelter at 7 months and that is kitten stage. Deworming kittens and puppies is basic health care 101. I can't believe they microchipped her, which is a luxury but failed to give her basic medical care. Not to mention 1 of those parasites is transmissable to humans. I am 63 and they also put my health at risk. Gracie is living her best life now that I've rescued her from those incompetent people. This is the 2nd cat I've adopted from them, but I assure you I won't be back. I contacted a regulatory agency because that was cruel and inhumane. I can't believe they were assessing my ability to properly care for her, when it should have been the other way around. They should be ashamed for treating a helpless animal like that. read more

If I could give this place 0 Stars I would would never go back ... A few months ago my husband and I purchased/adopted a dog for our 3 boys ages 1-9 because we were looking for a family pet . The dog we got had been sent back to the shelter prior to us adopting her and they would tell us what was the reason but as soon as we brought her home we figured out why . The dog is aggressive, untrainable and also never calms down . We've taken her to doggy classes , purchased calming medicine from the vet , tried Pet friendly CBD products and nothing seemed to work . After 4 months we figured enough was enough our children were scared of her . I called the adoption place to see if we could be refunded or get another dog and they denied us but they wanted us to bring the dog back with all of her paperwork. But if they aren't willing to work something out knowing that the dog had problems before hand is just ridiculous. Now we have to find another shelter to send the pup back to because I'll be dammed if they get her back . read more

I make a good amount of money, have a long history of happy pets, and came here to adopt a cat. Three days later I was turned down because I have a female dog that isn't fixed. The dog is 7, sterile, and we once lost a female due to infection caused by spay surgery. This place won't trust me with an inside cat until I have my outside dog fixed? Are they insane? I'm surprised they didn't come over to interview my house plants first. Adopt elsewhere because these people don't want to part with any pets. UPDATE: You should also check their ratings on Google and Yahoo. They have a long history of bad relations with the public. They are not associated with the SPCA and are actually a kill shelter. Why must they kill animals and then lie about it? Because they refuse to adopt the pets out to good homes. The goal of a pet adoption shelter: Take $ from good families, give animal to good families. Encourage people to not irresponsibly breed cats and encourage adoption. Shelter is happy, animal is happy, family is happy. Option # 1: Take my $, give me the cat, have empty cage. Shelter is happy because of empty cage and $ to help another cat. Cat is happy to have a family and be out of a cage. I am happy because I have a cat. Option # 2: Refuse my $, keep cat #1. I go to a professional breeder or irresponsible cat breeder. I give them the $ I would have given shelter. They are happy because of $ and will now be encouraged to breed more. Cat #2 is happy to have a family. I am happy to have a cat. Shelter is sad because they have no $, no open cages, and have encouraged irresponsible breeding. Cat #1 is sad because it lives in a cage. This place honestly believes they are best accomplishing their goals by choosing Option #2. They are proud that they do not have to have the approval of the public because they are privately funded. They don't understand that every word of bad press is donations they will never get, thus hurting these pets rather than helping them. Someone should report them for animal cruelty for the amount of damage they are doing to the reputation of animal adoption. Petsmart of League City is associated with this shelter and evidently agrees with their policies. I will be approaching Petsmart to attempt to convince them to throw these jokers out and give their support to an animal adoption agency that actually adopts animals out to good homes. read more

I have adopted two dogs from this shelter. One was about 15 years ago, the other about 6 months ago. It is a great shelter! Their facilities are very well kept and very well designed. In each kennel there is an inside and outside area. Even so the animals all want to leave for a loving home. They have so many animals! You are sure to find one that is perfect for you. Their web site is great to look at all the animals and get a small story about them. Some have videos also. The volunteers and workers are so nice. They also do a pretty in depth check on you to make sure you are suitable for the pet. You most likely will not be able to leave that day with the dog or cat. So bring with you your vets information if you have one and if you have a landlord make sure you talk to them before hand. They will call to make sure they are ok with you having a pet. This is all to make sure you do not have to bring the animal back. The shelter is kinda in the middle of nowhere but its worth the drive. Also they always need supplies to take care of the animals. This shelter was disappointing and in my opinion unprofessional. Are they really trying to adopt these animals out with their impossible standards?? We have been looking for a dog to adopt and went to this shelter this past Saturday to look at their dogs. We did not find a dog in the pens outside that met our requirements and on our way back through the office noted a dog laying in a crate in the middle of the office area and remarked on how she was the perfect size and temperament that we were looking for. The next day at a Petsmart adoption event, lo and behold, there she was! We were surprised no one at the shelter the day before had mentioned to us that she was adoptable, especially given our parting comments in the office. They told us that this was her first adoption event and no one else had put in a request to adopt her yet. So we put in our adoption request that day. We are responsible adults and can offer a good, safe, loving, and healthy home environment that a shelter dog would be happy to live in. 2 days after submitting our adoption request, I got a call asking about certain answers that we had provided on the form (if they need clarification on these questions, I recommend that they add a section for people to comment. it's not going to make their already 4 page long form any more formidable...) I had answered the questions on the form honestly and gave them honest answers over the phone as well. 2 days later I get a call back telling me that we cannot have the dog as she has already been adopted by someone else. What?!? We were told that was her first adoption event and that our application was the first! And why wouldn't they have mentioned anything on Tuesday when they called to ask me additional questions about my adoption form? To top it off, they told me that even if she hadn't been adopted already that they had some issues with my application that would have prevented us from getting her anyway. WHAT? Why even say that? Not to mention, these were in my opinion minor issues that I easily could have worked with them on. These were not deal breaker issues, but they way they phrased it lead me to believe that the dog had not in fact been adopted out to someone else but that they just didn't think that we would be good pet owners. It was a very offensive and unprofessional way to handle the situation. And we're so disappointed that we will not be adopting the dog that we spent 4 hours with petting, snuggling, and getting to know in petsmart the weekend before... read more

I am totally disappointed in this facility. I took my child to this facility this weekend to find an addition to our family. My husband and I thought it would be a great idea to take our family pet with us so that he could meet the other pet that we would consider adopting. The gentleman that walked us around and gave us a tour was very kind and we enjoyed his kindness and he was very knowledgeable about each animal. I had a problem with The girl at the front desk and my paperwork. I really feel like they were interrogating me and treating me like some type of criminal. The application process was not a friendly process at all. I have never had to endure this type of treatment at any type of pet shelter. Today they contacted me to let me know that my records could not be found at Petsmart for my current pet. I was seeing patients at that time and could not handle the issue right away. I called on my way home from work only to be told that the two pets that I considered adopting had been given to a better suited applicant. The two dogs that we found to adopt are sisters and we wanted to keep them together and we knew they would be a perfect fit for our little ShiTease. They didn't give us a heads up about the paperwork. We just filled the paperwork out on Sunday and today is Monday. I found the staff to be very rude and inconsiderate because our family has already planned to have these two little girls. Unbelievable how they treat people there! I'm so upset! This is where we got our dog. They have fenced areas where you can bring your current dogs to meet a prospective adoptee. They really care about finding a good home, not just adopt them out as fast as they can. They have volunteers who come and take out the shelter dogs for exercise, to help release there pent up energy and do training to give them some manners. They do not have enough volunteers to do every dog every day, but they do an amazing job. Next time we are looking for a new friend we will come here. I would give them a zero if I could. The volunteer at Petsmart was very nice. The woman who makes the adoption decisions was a horrible person. I wish I remembered her name. She didn't believe anyone with children should receive a pet, specifically one with an autistic child (whom the cat immediately formed a bond with). Her theory was that a cat should have it's own room in your house. She told me that because their animals were never euthanized and they ran on private donations, they can deny anyone they want and to go "find a place without standards" if I wanted a cat. I picked a kitten at the Webster shelter from an abandoned litter. He's wonderful and happy; well loved by both my children and we've had him for a year. Basically: do not donate to this place. I adopted my pup from here a week ago and just love him. Everyone at the shelter was friendly and knowledgeable about all the dogs. I was interested in 3 dogs and put in an application. The application process is somewhat extensive,including a vet check,checking with your landlord, etc. I hadn't heard anything, so I called a few days later and they said 2 of the dogs I was interested in I could not adopt because they needed a yard. In a way I could understand because both the dogs were high energy breeds, however in my application I wrote how I was going to go to the dog park everyday and go on frequent walks/runs. I agree both dogs would best fit in a home with a yard, however an active lifestyle in an apartment is better than being in the shelter right? Anyways, I went back and ended up adopting the 3rd dog I was interested in and everything worked out in the end. Based on other reviews and my experience, I can definitely see why good pet owners are upset when their applications are turned down. I understand that they only make money from donations and adoptions, but they are also dishonest. They claim that their adoption fees cover spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping, but they don't actually pay for any of it themselves. The people who bring in stray animals are required to first take the animal to the vet to have it spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and tested for aids. Then, they are required to pay an additional $75 to the shelter to take the stray animal. Again, I understand that they only receive money this way, but they could at least be honest about their practices. read more

We visited Petsmart and found a cat that we thought would be a good addition to our house. When we were visiting with the cat at Petsmart a lady with her two school age kids wanted to see the same cat. I advised the volunteer that we were good with that and and she said that she didn't want to see the cat go to anyone with young children because the cat has a little arthritis! Very unprofessional! Well obviously they don't want the cat to go to anyone! It is very sad that their process takes several days and then they advised us that they are turning down our application because we work 12 hour shifts and the cat needs someone to be there so the cat can get some exercise, I would love to know while there facility is closed who exercises the animals. We are great pet owners and I will go to a shelter in the future that is really interested in actually adopting out their pets. Very unrealistic expectations!!!! read more

We adopted an adorable puppy from this shelter back in 2008. About a month after he developed a "cough" took him to the vet...he was diagnosed with distemper. He had a 25% chance of survival. About a month later we ended up having to put him down. Distemper in cats/dogs in most cases is due to unsanitary living conditions- being exposed to and ingesting other animal's feces. A while later, we decided to try again but went to a different shelter in the area. We told them our story and they were not surprised at all, and had heard the same story from many others. They told us (which was so disturbing) that this specific shelter on more than one occasion had to put down almost every cat and dog because they had all contracted this disease. (Our vet had told us a similar story as well) I would never suggest not adopting these poor animals, but demanding a blood test to check for distemper is probably a really good idea!! read more
