My first ever five star review! And Bauhaus definitely deserves each and every little star.
Despite taking its name from the German design school, very little in Bauhaus is actually of the modernist persuasion: it's organic, eclectic, global, colourful, unique, with a warm and tactile aesthetic running through the whole shop, from the fittings to the collections.
In a way, Bauhaus is like the boutique version of Oxfam: with fair trade, handmade and wares from every corner of the globe (despite the fact by its very nature a globe is round and doesn't *have* corners... but I digress.)
The collection is cohesive as it is diverse, with everything from colourful Mexican religious icons, to Marimekko artwork, to accessories from local designers like Pallas and awesome leather goods (oh, those Italian satchels!). Stock turnover seems quite high too, so there's always something new to covet, even for regulars like myself.
As Mema points out, it may look all fancy pants but it's actually more affordable that you might think - yes I could easily blow $1,000 on accessories alone if I were so inclined/ endowed, but I usually walk out with an Indian ring or beaded neckpiece for under a $20.
From the affordable, cherry-picked trinkets to the inviting earthy interior, I can't fault anything about Bauhaus. A perfect place to pick up gifts for yourself (ahem) or other special peeps in your life. Gorgeous! read more
