bauhaus is one of the best gift shops in town. The prices are extremely reasonable, and by that I mean that items can be found to cater to all budgets. You can buy a tin pair of fighting chickens for $3 or a giant beaded flamingo for over $100. Chic rings could cost you $5, they could cost you $200, everyone's covered. The shop itself is so fashionably done, people walking past the window might not go in because it looks expensive. I promise you, there's something affordable for yourself, or to give to that special someone, or even your mum. I rarely (if ever) leave without getting a trinket or bit of jewellery to fancy up my home or my person. This is not a place with annoying shop assistants wandering around asking whether you need any help or making you feel uncomfortable. Staff do extend a warm greeting from behind the checkout when not busy though. Their countenance invites inquiry and when you do ask questions about items or make a purchase they are friendly and very helpful. The branded gift wrapping is best described as "stylish" and that goes double for the layout of the shop itself and the items on offer. Music is ambient not musak and never intrusive. I'm told they don't have a website due to the high turnover of their awesome products. The high turnover means you're destined to get one-of-a-kind and interesting items. My friend got a Josephine-Baker-reminiscent, perspex, banana necklace and by the time I went to have a look they were all sold out. Right now they've many (fair trade) wares from South America and many iconographic religious pieces in addition to their cool and kitsch stock.

My first ever five star review! And Bauhaus definitely deserves each and every little star. Despite taking its name from the German design school, very little in Bauhaus is actually of the modernist persuasion: it's organic, eclectic, global, colourful, unique, with a warm and tactile aesthetic running through the whole shop, from the fittings to the collections. In a way, Bauhaus is like the boutique version of Oxfam: with fair trade, handmade and wares from every corner of the globe (despite the fact by its very nature a globe is round and doesn't *have* corners... but I digress.) The collection is cohesive as it is diverse, with everything from colourful Mexican religious icons, to Marimekko artwork, to accessories from local designers like Pallas and awesome leather goods (oh, those Italian satchels!). Stock turnover seems quite high too, so there's always something new to covet, even for regulars like myself. As Mema points out, it may look all fancy pants but it's actually more affordable that you might think - yes I could easily blow $1,000 on accessories alone if I were so inclined/ endowed, but I usually walk out with an Indian ring or beaded neckpiece for under a $20. From the affordable, cherry-picked trinkets to the inviting earthy interior, I can't fault anything about Bauhaus. A perfect place to pick up gifts for yourself (ahem) or other special peeps in your life. Gorgeous!

Bauhaus offers a wide collection of ethnically diverse jewellery and homewares, ranging from Mexican to Indian to pretty much any culture you could think of (well, probably not that far - but you get the point!). I do think that the shop is extremely well designed, and though it does seem to be a bit cluttered, it's reminiscent of some market you may come across in Marakech, only a little more stylish. There's definitely something for everyone here, and it's an ideal place to come for gifts and decorative pieces to place around the home. The prices are reasonable, depending on the kind of item you're looking for. For example, you could spend a couple of dollars for a few pieces of jewellery, or you could spend a couple of hundred dollars on a stone statue - it varies with the craftsmanship of the piece in question. But there's something that's always bothered me about selling items such as these. I'm all up for getting acquainted with other cultures, but here in the West we have this idea that we can simply buy a stone statute of Buddha and stick it in our garden, or put up a tapestry of a Hindi Om without any idea of what it symbolises, and appear to be "worldly" or "cultured". And for some reason, middle-aged women from the eastern suburbs seem to gravitate towards this mentality. Even from an atheist's perspective, it seems a little wrong to capitalise on things of religious importance. But who am I to complain?

A range of delicate ottoman jewelries they used to have.

I was originally attracted to the big spiders for hanging on the wall, because they are kind of unusual and not so real they'd freak you out; upon closer inspection the shop is crammed full of all sorts of really wonderful odds and sods. Bangles, beads, book ends, wall hangings, candle sticks, sarongs, bags, a few baskets; all pretty much imported stuff from all over the place. Not too expensive and a great variety of things. African carvings and probably Indonesian, Indian, some Australian as well, I've been in several time and still see stuff I didn't notice the first and last time, if you get what I mean. It is a family business (as in wife and husband), so you can rely on them if you are looking for something unusual to help you out - they know their stock pretty well and since so much of it is wood they do a fair amount of polishing and keeping things fresh. I really like wood so I really enjoy having a look through this shop. Some items are quite small and then they vary in size through to really large features objects like elephants and giraffes. Its fun browsing and hard to visit without seeing something you want to take home, so be warned!

An amazing range of really beautiful original artwork is housed here ready for you to buy up big! Gloriously witty, downright sexy and incredibly well done from simple little cards through to rather complicated objects; dinner plates, cups, ear rings, prints, nick knack's... it is all here and the best thing about it all, this is South Australian through and through. It's not that they don't like artworks from any of the other states, it's just that there are some people who want to do the 'buy local' thing when it comes to spending their money, and they want to support local artists, and believe me South Australia has lots of them. There are so many artists creating so much work here that you will find quite a few stores and galleries that only have South Australian work in them; this is certainly one of them. I wouldn't say there was a particular style in this part of the country, but I would say the standard is very high, and the prices are pretty reasonable. It's not so cheap you imagine the artist has no self worth, but nor is it priced out of every-ones range. The women looking after the counter tell me that the hottest seller is the original t-shirt with "Heaps Good" written over a map of South Australia, and it's popular because it reflects the sort of vernacular used here - South Australians don't really speak all that well, but maybe I'll get run out of town if I say that (!) so perhaps I should settle for saying "Heaps Good" is a way we express ourselves with a little touch of wry humour? Urban Cow do have a website and it is worth checking out. I'm informed that you can rest assured the artists do get the best part of what you pay for their work, and no, it's not all prints and paintings; like I said, there are plenty of things including sculptures, textiles, ceramics, glassware and odd, silly things to delight anyone who likes a nice bit of art. They say "Every picture is worth a thousand words," so I went mad taking quite a few pictures, if you check them out you will come up with the thousands of words that my pictures will inspire in you rather than me attempt to describe everything I saw (and loved). The friendly staff will gladly let you browse without charging you an entry fee, even though the shop feels as much like a gallery as it does a unique gift shop. Enjoy browsing and good luck deciding what to buy. From what I hear, the "Heaps Good" t-shirts are the strongest item, but you be the judge.
