My son likes a specific type of look and frame and Oscar Oglethorpe is always able to accommodate. I remember the days when all frames were $150 (that's how long we've been customers). Just like everything else, there has been an increase in prices, but the customer service, quality, and materials have never been lacking (at least not for us). If you are one who prefers glasses and want to wear spectacles that are a conversation piece or you just simply want to stand out--Pop in to Oscar Oglethorpe--in there, you are sure to find something to fit the bill.

We went in with low expectations because we have been striking out lately. Within 15 min we found a great looking pair of glasses that were stylish and comfortable. The lead time is quite long, but I'm hoping they get her new glasses back to her within a couple weeks. Since she had custom clip on sunglasses added they mentioned it could take 4 weeks! I hope they are wrong. I will keep you posted! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. The downtown vibe is nice as well. Great store! It is located next to Crafted. It's a little difficult to find because the signage isn't great so really pay close attention and look for the silhouette of glasses on the door.

That is helpful to show you at home what they have available but when you come in to the store, it's such a better experience because you can FEEL the frames on your face and the staff there are so knowledgeable and helpful! Grace and Bruce and Mena (their on site Optician) have been amazing! The most amazing part is, I purchased a pair I thought was perfect but it ended up not working at all (I wear hearing aids, have a wide bridge but narrow face, etc. so I'm not an "easy fit"). I went back and they went the extra mile over and over to make sure I had a better pair that fit better, looked better and refunded me some money because the second pair was less expensive than the first. The 2 (only) 1 star reviews here ( from Last year ) are not reflective of the service I've received the last two months from WP in Greensboro. They will gladly adjust your glasses if you purchased them from WP. I've been in several times for this. Also I've had 3 pairs sent to me over the last 2 months, they always arrive quicker than expected, I get an email each time telling me they're won their way and when they're delivered and I just pop in the store to have them adjusted after they arrive. Because of a special circumstance (they put new lenses in an old frame they no longer carry) they were delivered to the store and I received an email and a call saying they were ready for me to pick up. I would never buy my eyeglasses anywhere else and I recommend them to everyone (I get compliments almost weekly on my glasses).

Apparently they can't "adjust" glasses for you lol... So you have to go somewhere else if they're…read moretoo loose or too tight they don't care

As soon as I knew I was moving to Greensboro, I looked for some of my favorite national chains and…read morefound them right here. The first place worth mentioning is REI. I usually park nearby, peruse the garage sale items, then go on a stroll around the whole shopping center. While I do like Whole Foods and will go there for certain specialty items, I tend to spend a little less at the gigantic Harris Teeter. There's a huge selection of clothing stores, you can get a legit (if pricey) massage at Hand and Stone, get your haircut, see a movie, and grab a great dinner from a wide range of restaurant options. This might be the most upscale shopping center in town.

In the 80s and 90s, the mall we went to the most in Greensboro was Four Seasons Mall (now Four…read moreSeasons Town Centre). It went downhill and beginning in the 2000s, we went to Friendly Center instead. This has been a general trend in America where people have shifted from going to traditional indoor malls to outdoor malls, some integrated with mixed-use developments and/or repurposed sites. Funny thing is Friendly Center has been around since 1957 and Four Seasons 1974. Both have changed over the years, for better or for worse. I came here multiple times with friends and family in 2008 and 2009. With my friends, we'd go to stores like REI, Great Outdoor Provision Co, and Barnes & Noble. It was around these years that I picked up a MacBook for my mom from the Apple Store. She returned several times for One to One trainings on how to use various Apple devices. Since 2018, I've been going to Friendly Center for Schiffman's Jewelers, for the most part. That's because I got my wife's engagement ring and wedding band from Schiffman's and have returned for inspections and cleanings. We returned just a few weeks ago to see Frances, who just celebrated 45 years at Schiffman's. Last month, I accompanied my wife and sister to Sephora and Anthropologie. Other brands that were or still are of interest to me at Friendly Center include Brooks Brothers and lululemon. There are also a Whole Foods Market and Williams-Sonoma. Friendly Center was sort of patchworked together over the years, so the design and routing aren't ideal and getting around can be confusing. It would be nice if there were maps of the property on-site, but we didn't see any during our recent visit. Also, at the time of writing this review, the map on their website is down. "Couldn't fetch map data." https://friendlycenter.com/directory Depending on what section of Friendly Center you're in, it's sometimes better to get back in your car and drive to another store than it is to walk. This is because of the awkward, inefficient layout and lack of sidewalks. Again, not ideal. The brands are the draw. Check out Friendly Center on Facebook and Instagram at the links below. I was able to book an eye exam online through their website for the following week. They had a ton of availability and it was nice to do this at any hour of the day at my convenience without talking to someone. After I booked, I was immediately sent paperwork to fill out with my personal information and insurance (this was to help save time at my appointment). My appointment comes around and lucky me...I forgot my wallet. Thankfully I had photos of my ID & vision insurance on my phone and they took Apple Pay (a huge plus in my book). The person at the front desk was friendly and I only had to wait maybe a minute or two before the technician came to collect me. I do not remember her name, but she was kind and explained everything to me before taking photos of my eyes or doing anything. Something that was interesting about this whole experience was that the doctor was remote! The technician set up the exam towards the end of the appointment and I communicated with Dr. Boykin on video chat through an iPad like device. Even though he was remote, it still felt very personable with A+ care. He went over my eye scans with me and explained what a healthy eye looks like. The technician was in the room the whole time. After he finished the exam, he immediately wrote me a prescription and I went to the retail part of the store to pick out glasses. You definitely are not pressured to buy any of their glasses, but I wanted to because of convenience. The whole eye exam appointment took about an hour. The retail associate was also really nice. I definitely took my time trying on glasses to find what I liked and she didn't rush me at all and even helped make suggestions. I truly appreciated her patience. Before I placed my glasses order, she broke down the cost and explained what insurance covered. All in all, this was a wonderful experience. If you need to see an eye doctor, I would recommend this place!

The staff and doctors at Oman are nothing short of fantastic. It is not easy to write a rave…read morereview about a doctors office - especially an eye doctor. As a long-time glasses and contact wearer (i've been a "four-eyes" since first grade), i've been to numerous eye doctors in several different states. These pre-Oman experiences ranged from "Hey, that wasn't too bad" to "If this condescending chauvenist says one more word, I may need bail money..." As such, I do NOT give 5 stars lightly here. Dr. Johnson is a wonderful, down-to-earth eye care professional who really knows her field and works hard to find the perfect prescription for your eyes. I was impressed that she put so much time and thought into my initial exam and made some very helpful eye health recommendations. I have been back twice since 2012 and have taken my disabled/blind Mom to Dr. Johnson as well. Mom was treated with just as much care and respect as I was. If you are looking for an eye doctor in the Greensboro area, you really can't go wrong with Oman Eye Care & Dr. Johnson. Edit: It is worth noting that while the eye care professionals at Oman are wonderful and well-worth supporting, the glasses selection there, while high quality, is on the pricey side. If you are a poor post-graduate student like myself, you may want to check out Oscar Oglethorpe in downtown GSO for affordable, trendy glasses. I also swear by the price matching at 1-800-Contacts for those in a similar budget crunch. Just being honest here.

I'm honesty very disappointed with Oman Eyecare. When I first started going there many years ago,…read morethey were extremely friendly and I never had any billing issues. However, on 2 of the last 3 visits, I've had charge disputes which came as unnecessary surprises. When I established this latest appointment, I made it perfectly clear that I expected this visit to be covered by my insurance at no charge (since I had a previous problem with them in this regard, I wanted to make sure there was no misunderstanding). The person on the line confirmed they had my current insurance information on file, and that there would be no charge. They also acknowledged that their records indicated I visited Duke University Eye Center every year for a diagnostic eye exam, so the visit to Oman would be related to my optical Rx. Again, given a past billing issue with them, when I arrived for my appointment, I made it a point of mentioning to the desk person that my visit was to be at no charge. I confirmed the same information about going to Duke Eye Center every year. No questions or issues were raised about anything I said. Honestly, if they had mentioned there would be a charge for just having a portion of the exam performed (I didn't need Oman to replicate what I had done by Duke Eye Center a couple months prior), I would have had the entire exam done or chose to leave. The person who initially examined me had the personality of a dead fish. Totally unfriendly, disengaged, and seemed as if she would have liked to be anyplace else. Subsequently, I saw the optometrist, he went through the vision procedure, and I proceeded to the front desk to check out. All I expected was to be handed my prescription. I indicated I'd be back to visit their optical shop later, since I wanted my wife with me to choose a frame. At that point, the desk person indicated that my charge is $54. I told them that this visit was to be at no charge, as is noted on my insurance card for in-network providers like Oman. I also stated that this had been previously confirmed by them. I then got fed some nonsense about not having the "complete exam," so I had to pay for the refractory (determining the vision Rx) portion. Now, mind you, the "complete exam" INCLUDES the refractory portion. If I had been told this upfront, I would have gone through the complete exam, even though it was entirely unnecessary, or just left. Obviously, there was no question from the onset as to why I scheduled an appointment with them or that my expectation was that their service would be without charge to me. Long story short is that I didn't pay them, they stated they'd submit a claim to Humana's EyeMed Vision anyway, and I walked out of there without my Rx. In essence, the visit was an entire waste of my time. It's now been 2-1/2 weeks, and I've heard nothing from them whatsoever. So, I guess I just don't get my Rx prescription or even know what they've done with the claim. Overall, it was an entirely negative experience. I place the blame on them for poor communication, having individuals on their staff who apparently don't care about friendly interactions with their patients, and for seemingly trying to bill for services where a patient had clearly communicated their expectations otherwise.
