I've decided to remain with Cota & Cota at this time. Up until a few weeks ago my experience - both with the office and technicians - had been good, so I'm willing to give them another shot. First review: After 10 years of having Cota & Cota as my oil/propane provider, I cancelled my account with them and will be taking my business elsewhere. I had a maddeningly, frustrating call with one of their service desk staff (who I will not publicly name) who interrupted, spoke over me, and mansplained. When I called this gentleman out for his behavior, he 'let' me speak. When I finished speaking, he then said "Can I talk now?" It was 2:40, NOT 2:55! I operate a service oriented retail business, 26 years running. Even though I've felt frustrated on a slow Saturday to have someone show up a few minutes before closing, I've been there all day after all, I WOULD NEVER, EVER, EVER make a comment like that. The customer is my lifeblood, the reason I'm there. Even on my worst day, I'd never react to a customer the way I was "greeted" by theses guys. The next thing spoken by my "host" was a snide comment about one of the bags of returnables. It was a large garbage bag and had a majority of glass as opposed to aluminum. I have suffered from a severe shoulder injury and was struggling to lift the bag up onto the counter as a result. I was told that "if you can't pick up that bag, you shouldn't be bringing it in here!" Next thing, emptying a bag, it was discovered that a glass liquor bottle had broken, unbeknownst to me of course. I was now berated and told in a threatening way that "WE DON'T TAKE BROKEN BOTTLES!!" I would never intentionally try to return a broken bottle and obviously not expect that it could be returned. The response, the shitty attitude and general disdain shown me as a customer was inexcusable. If you gentlemen hate what you're doing, it shows. However, this is the business you've chosen. You earn a living by redeeming bottles and cans. There is obviously profit in it. Any business deserves dignity, any customer deserves respect. If you hate so much what you're doing, figure something else out. Otherwise, figure out some better customer service skills! UNBELIEVABLE! If you worked for me, it would be a very short career indeed! Disgusting customer experience.

The General Manager (Amy…read moreDuda) at the Woodstock VT branch was extremely rude when I raised a concern brought forth by a service tech (not a Dead River tech which I am sure played a role in her attitude) who was at my house over the weekend to fix my furnace and told me the issue that almost caused my house to burn down was most likely due to the tank not being filled regularly cause a large build-up of sludge which in turn burnt out all the electrical aspects inside the furnace - $800+ and tank needs replacement this spring, but thank god we still have our house and out fur-babies are still alive as we were not home when the issue occurred!! She was very belittling and extremely rude when I didn't use the correct terminology (I don't work in the fuel business). She even told me to research how sludge builds up in tanks, saying the tank not being full is not a contributing factor. So here is the research (special attention to the last line "This process is exacerbated by oil impurities, and internal tank rust, especially when tanks aren't kept full"): Sludge builds up in #2 heating oil tanks due to condensation, creating water at the bottom that fuels microbial growth (bacteria/fungi) that feed on the oil, producing waste that mixes with rust flakes, dirt, and oxidized oil to form a thick, sticky residue. This process is exacerbated by air exposure (oxidation), oil impurities, and internal tank rust, especially when tanks aren't kept full, creating ideal conditions for contaminants to settle at the bottom. It appears that both oil impurities and the tank not being full for months are contributing factors to the issue! I wasn't saying they were the only issue, but my research only strengthened my decision to change companies, as the lack of timely deliveries IS a factor in the issues we currently have! Please do better!! Customer beware: call the main office in Maine if you have an issue, as the Woodstock office is horrible!
