I've been a customer of Battenkill Creamery for years, buying their milk and cream at the Troy Farmers Market. If you've only had grocery store heavy cream you should definitely pick some up. I stopped by the store last weekend because I was nearby, picked up some heavy cream for strawberry shortcake and got a dish of the salted caramel ice cream. It was so delicious. Full disclosure: I am a home delivery customer (for about 7 years now) but have never been to the actual Salem location. I see them at various local farmers markets, county fairs and, most recently, spied product down in NYC! (had no idea they distributed as far south as the financial district). Perhaps you've heard that it's the "best chocolate milk" ever. While I'm certainly not a milk connoisseur...I must agree. Everything about Battenkill's chocolate milk is divine. Just the right creaminess, texture and sweetness....an amazing treat for sure. And, since I am not a true milk expert, I consulted with those that are. Hands down, the 2% is the favorite as compared with a few other local dairy farms. Yes. We did a taste test. My only issue is that I wish they were organic. The home delivery service is really cool. Totally old-school glass milk bottles are delivered in the middle of the night right to your doorstep - into your own fabulous old-school Battenkill-branded milk box!! It's easy to get this set up and going...and the weekly order needs to be in by 11am on Monday for a Wednesday morning delivery. Completely paperless and all done online. The only time I've had to speak to anyone is when my credit card expired and I needed to replace it. Sigh. Now I want chocolate milk. read more

Absolutely delicious ice cream....which has standard thickening agents found in almost all ice creams and of which have been proven safe, unless of course you read the completely unscientific garbage written by "Food Babe." The mocha chocolate milk is something heavenly, the cheese curds delicious, even a glass of whole white milk is divine. The store offers many goodies and the farm itself well maintained with cows doing cow things and not being harmed. It's worth the trip. read more

Great products, both proprietary and from neighboring farms (e.g., the latter including grass-fed ground beef--very high quality). Milk is great and very affordable (I believe it was $2.50 for a half gallon). Ice cream was solid but maybe not as "to die for" as some had led me to believe, and it has a couple of less than natural ingredients--though I nitpick here. Overall, very good show. Best milkshakes within a several hour radius. Their ice cream is flavorful, rich, and decadent, and their milk is the best in New York State. A chocolate milkshake uses their chocolate milk -- which, by itself is borderline a milkshake to begin with -- to create a depth of chocolate flavor unlike other milkshakes. Inside the store, there are dairy cases with milk (all levels of milk fat), chocolate milk, buttermilk, cheeses, ice creams, and other local farm goods. Definitely worth the drive. read more

Their ice cream is rich, creamy, and flavorful - perhaps even the best I've ever had. Having recently studied abroad in Sicily, it's the closest thing to authentic gelato that I've tried in America - even creamier and denser than American gelato! The prices were amazing, also. A kiddie cup, which was the perfect amount for me given how rich their ice cream is, was only $1.75. The same amount of ice cream goes for upwards of $4.50 where I'm from in CT. Great atmosphere, also - ate with the cows and had a beautiful view of green, rolling hills. I will definitely be back here for ice cream and more! read more

Best ice cream and milk/chocolate milk. Ever. I'm in no way a milk drinker, but the milk (especially the chocolate milk) from Battenkill is SO delicious! It's like drinking a milkshake with how rich and creamy it is. I don't live around here, but visit the area once a year or so and Battenkill Creamery is a must on the list of stops to make. The ice cream is incredible--even just going for a simple cone is 10x better than what you'll find elsewhere. And it's so affordable! $1.50 for the smallest size cone and it's still pretty big. Disgusting if you ask me. This place is a total factory farm. We visited last summer and were sorely disappointed. We were surprised to find that Battenkill Valley Creamery milk is NOT organic, and it does NOT come from grass-fed cows. It may come in pretty glass bottles, but Battenkill Valley Creamery eggnog and flavored milk has high fructose corn syrup AND carageenan. Their ice cream is loaded with stabilizers and other nasty ingredients. When we visited, we snuck back to see the cows, which is not part of the regular creamery tour. We were horrified to see that Battenkill Valley Creamery is a "CAFO" confinement milking operation with 400+ cows crammed into a windowless warehouse-like barn, locked up inside, never seeing the light of day. Not to mention the manure these cows create, causing all sorts of environmental and health hazards. As you can imagine, the odor in the barn is horrific. Battenkill Valley Creamery's cows are most certainly NOT pastured. They also treat their cows with antibiotics, and feed their cows GMO soybeans. Wake up New York, don't drink this kind of horrible milk - you'd be better off drinking regular milk from the supermarket. Spend your money supporting local farmers with better production practices! read more

They without a doubt produce the best milk I have purchased out of a grocery store. We've tried all sorts of milks out of stores like Whole Foods, the Fresh Market, Nugget, and other moderately-high priced grocers and this brand nails it for our chai. I mean it's as close as you get to getting fresh milk delivered to your doorstep like back in the day. As you're browsing you'll be able to hear production work in the rear. There was nobody working when I came, so the honor system was in effect - with a cash drawer to leave your payment and make change. The prices here are truly at a farm-to-consumer level, which I greatly appreciate. They offer many dairy products and have a glass exchange program if you prefer your dairy in glass. Other products include frozen meats and local coffee, for example. I'm not sure what the hours of the ice cream service are, but I'm sure it's as fresh as it gets. read more
