DO NOT BUY ANY CARPET FROM BATTENS OR USE THEIR CARPET FITTERS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! The service we received was absolutely appalling. We paid them close to £400 for a carpet, underlay, gripper and fitting. On hoovering the carpet several hours after the fitting the carpet started peeling away from the gripper. We phoned to complain expecting somebody to come back the same day but had to wait 5 days for the fitter ('John') to come back. This time we left it a while before hoovering as that was the fitters excuse for the carpet coming up the first time! The same thing happened again when we went to hoover the room, the carpet just peeled away from the gripper. I called the shop again only to be given more excuses by the shop manager ('Colin') and no assistance whatsoever to resolve the matter. Apparently John the fitter had told the manager that we had peeled the carpet up after it was fitted to paint the skirting boards - HELLO!? who would do that?! We painted and decorated the room weeks before we bought the carpet! The first time we complained to the shop was a few hours after the fitting - one hell of a quick paint job!!?! John even told his boss Colin that when he came back the 2nd time he got covered in paint when trying to put the carpet back - barefaced liar!! Surely our carpet would be covered in paint too - DUH! Colin then spoke to John again and all he advised was to take the fitter to court! He then advised that John thought we had pulled the carpet up by dragging our bed around the room - excuse number 3!? He also had the cheek to advise me what tools to buy to do the job myself - WTF!? that's why I paid for gripper and fitting! Obviously I've wasted enough time and money on this crappy company to take them to court. It's pretty obvious John is an incompetent fitter and Colin the manager doesn't care what sort of service or reputation his shop receives. If you're looking to get new carpet it always pays to go with an independent retailer the price difference isn't always that huge, but you will get a much better selection of products and a more personal service. Having tried the well-known chain further up Holloway road for a previous fitting we were keen to go with Batten carpets on the subsequent occasion as they had some lovely products including Alternative Flooring and Kersaint Cobb. The service was generally great they don't offer massive deals but will knock off a few quid here and there if you ask nicely (in our case, my partner pleading that he didn't want the cost to go beyond a certain 'psychological barrier!) and are quite helpful about getting the fitting at a time to suit you. We were a little disappointed at the amount of wastage that was left after the fitting (I've done this enough times to know roughly how much spare you should expect at the end of the job and this was a little over what I'd call average) but we were carpeting a slightly awkward shaped room and possibly the amount left over was just testiment to the quality of the fitter who was great and very professional. We were offered re-funds for items not used, but not the spare carpet Overall though, a breath of fresh air after the frantic, inpersonal 'service' we had from the fitters sent by the larger chain (Carpet Right), who could not get out of the door quick enough and even damaged part of our newly-plastered wall by leaning their heavy equipment on it. One star for these guys I'm afraid, had a carpet fitted. Was quoted £250 for underaly so got much superior underlay on Ebay instead for less than £100. Quality was ok but the price was ski high. Went back to have a small room fitted with the same carpet was quoted £250 for a room which is 2 metres by 2 metres and quoted £600 for a hallway. Total £850. Shopped around and got the same carpet fitted for £350 + my own underlay for £100. If you ask me they are completley over priced. My advice get a sample and shop around. read more

This was the worse experience ever. I think it was the owner who served me. He was so pushy,so rude,and clearly making things up as he went along. When i told him that i wanted time to think about the carpets, he became very aggressive, and actually accused me of wasting his time. Oh dear, Michelle did seem to be having a bad day ....... I have recently bought flooring from Battens, and received much better service than this. To be fair, I dealt with Scott, not Colin, but can honestly say I found the service helpful and efficient. The price was reasonable and the fitting achieved without any disasters. Sorry, only one star for Batten Carpets and this is for the measuring guy called Ian. What an ordeal! We visited the shop and noted the carpets we liked. I was then told I could order samples online and Ian would come to measure. So far so good. I looked online to order the samples when I returned home but not all were listed so I called the store to order over the phone - the guy seemed helpful and said I would receive all the swatches within one week. The swatches never arrived so I called to chase and about 5 phonecalls later, being passed from one person to the other I eventually managed to speak to the owner who confirmed they had no note of the order and that their employee was 'passing the buck'. I asked if they could find out who was working that day (as it is a small family business) but they said not and that I would have to come back to the shop to choose again! Timescale for all of this was about 3 weeks. I then found my list and asked them to bring the large samples to me, which they kindly did and then collected 2 days later. I then gave them a list of what I wanted and I had to chase for the quote (which was noteably more that their competitors also on Holloway Road. In the meantime they had taken £25 from me for all this and for measuring. There was one helpful person, the guy who measured called Ian who to be frank is far better than the owner and his son - who are both uncommunicative and unhelpful. We then went along to JB Carpets and I had said I had been to Batten who said he got a lot of disgruntled customers coming from there. I chose my carpets, measured and fitted all within 10 days. Great, no nonsense service with staff you can actually hold a conversation with. read more

Can we give no stars? No? Had to select the minimum of one then. Having spent over £800 with this company, we tried to return 3 unopened packs of wood. The manager at first said we couldn't and said 'you were given the correct amount for your measurements!' He then relented and agreed to take the packs back, but said he would have to charge a £50 're-stocking' fee to take it back. This is despite the fact that the wood was in stock in his Holloway way when we got it. One member of staff offered to give us a refund if we came back when the manager was not there. He calculated the correct price of what we were due back. Sadly when we got to the shop, the manager Chris Batten was there. He refunded us LESS than the price we paid for each pack, saying we were given a discount initially. This didn't seem to tally but we were totally fed up of arguing with Chris Batten by this point. If that were not enough, to collect the 3 packs, he charged us a further £25. When my daughter went to the store to talk to him, he initially denied being the manager, saying 'the manager is not around.' She got all this on audio as proof. He did then admit he was the sole owner and manager, when my daughter reminded him of our consumer rights. The man was proven to be a liar. He was rude and dismissive of us as customers and please believe me, once he has got your money he will change character like a chameleon. He also treats his staff appallingly. Avoid this man and his company at all costs. He isn't any cheaper than bigger chain companies and at least you will be able to take things further if you can have complaints. With Chris Batten the buck stops with him. Once he has your money you will be summarily dismissed in the same way he treated us - despite my mother being a pensioner. read more

Just 2 warnings. 1. The customer service I received from Batten Carpets started fine and became terrible as time went by. The products are good quality and value but be careful to ask qs and ensure you get all the information you need before proceeding with an order. 2. The fitters were excellent but I discovered marks on the sisal carpet I had fitted on the stairs. It was VERY difficult to get Batten Carpets to respond. Eventually, before the fitters returned, I was told by them the glue used on the underlay was water soluble so I could remove the marks with a little water. I went ahead and followed their advice on 1 mark and there is now a permanent water mark in that spot. The fitter informed me that you should never apply water to sisal as it will always stain it. (My sisal is dark grey). The other marks were greatly reduced by the fitter who picked off the glue with tweezers. I would use again for the products but I would be extremely wary about the patchy (i.e. not all bad) sometimes rude service and obvious lack of knowledge / expertise of some staff. read more

We had our whole flat fitted out with engineered wood from Batten Carpets and it has totally transformed the flat, we are very happy with the result! Great service from start to finish and great value for money. I would certainly recommend them and would definitely use them again. read more
