    A most Bodaciously Beautiful morning
    Glenn V.

I can't quite explain why those doggie play on words catch phrase commercials and/or their sneaky little marketing messages and then radio advertising companies spin into their pitch when the season is ripe for doggy activities. "It's Bark-a-licious" - that kinda stuff gets the knob turned and button flicked to a more permanent position of OFF, I'll take down the entire electrical system of the car if necessary. Somebody here once told me upon my arrival to the Bath area when I was out doing some scouting intel for myself and my plans - which turns out, weren't very well planned at all although, I'll tell you that they sure did seem that they were as I laid down my pen and notebook upon my chest, somewhat satisfied with myself and crushed my last glass of wine with a sense of phantom accomplishments. They told me that this dog park had a sort of careless crown, consumed more by the fraternizing and their triple vente frappuchinos - I found this to be way off base. For you see - it's all about perception folks. Two people can see the exact same occurrence and come away with two completely different opinions and dangerous or relaxed conclusions. At my Queens dog park (dog park in Queens for those reading correctly) -ive seen my share of two aggressive large breeds taking off on each other as the guy and gal owners, who associate they're toughness with their weapons ( I mean dogs) try to break it up - having no real experience in the art of breaking up large breed dog fights. Here's an undisputed way to release any dogs grip - stick your finger in his/her butt. It's not a sexy antidote, but I guarantee - any and all jaws will open upon initial push . Two big strong un-neutered males circling typically indicates that it's about to POP. Followed by heated finger points, curses and swears - something about their mothers and one returns with a machete. Here = Really good dog parks, good dogs, good people. There = Poor dog parks, many dogs (w/ many personalities), marginalized people depending on your time of arrival. The earlier the people, the more responsible - a higher level of dog park etiquette. As I See It: Dog Parks are for pup gathering to have fun, practice social skills - this is the idea as I see it - of course exercise is important. But be careful of your dogs energy before going into your local dog park, pause, relax, check the environment - if you see any warning signs - maybe avoid the park that hour - you can always come back, the parks not going anywhere. And please, please, please, please -- for all that's holy in the world no matter your religion and to whom you pray - don't bring your dogs toy to the dog park. Further explanation should not be necessary.

Well this is indeed different. It's lovely and the fact that on a hot day it is completely shaded…read morewith 50 to 100 foot tall trees covering every step of the way. I definitely recommend wearing appropriate shoes and clothing especially until you know what kind of plants and wildlife are out here. There are two trails one says it's handicap accessible the other which I took is definitely not and it is not for anyone with any kind of difficulty walking. Cool little creeks let the dogs playing not too deep this time of year maybe 6 inches to a foot in most places. Definitely a good off leash area not too many people here in fact you could go an entire walk without seeing anyone so I'm good for quiet time to think or chat on the phone well you hang out with your favorite canine companion. Maybe was to wear bug spray won't know till tomorrow if I'm covered in mosquito bites but no sound of flies just little tickles here in there.. I was a little worried about getting lost at first but to the road that you can hear the sound of cars although not so close that you have to worry about your dog running into traffic. What I like the most about it is that it's actually a good hike and good exercise and it's different than the other dog parks and it's more a hiking trail that you can bring your dog and allow it off leash then it is an actual dog park. Also make sure you bring your own bags and water if needed. And most of all have fun

You will see the kiosk. Part of the trail is paved and you will be able to go around the Home Depot building. There is a short dirt trail that is marked as handicap accessible and only goes a short distance in to the woods and there are benches to sit and look out over the water on either side. You can follow the smaller path down to the water. If you follow the paved trail to the right you will come to the dirt trail that skirts the pond. This is packed dirt and there are stairs and tree roots. The trail is becoming more and more popular. Expect to see people walking dogs here off leash. This trail connects to the Red Brook Trail as well that goes behind Sappi. We have seen many herons, ducks, an owl and what look like fox dens. There are signs of beavers, but we have not seen any. This is a great walk while being on the heart of a busy area of South Portland. Depending on the path you take, this is approximately 2 miles long. *As a side note: there are some "camps" in this area and we have come across some transients and homeless in this area. As always, take safety precautions for trail walking.

Even after doing my research, though, I did not know fully realize that the 40-acre Hinckley Park in South Portland was FOR dogs. Like, it's not just a trail that dogs are allowed on, which is what I assumed. It's a straight up dog park where leashes aren't required, and apparently neither is picking up after your canine friend. So, if you don't mind the occasional poo pile or the incredibly frequent dog interaction (read: being sniffed in awkward places, being jumped on, being growled at, or being rubbed on after a pup has taken a swim in the muddy water) then maybe this spot isn't for you. Which is too bad, because it really does offer very nice, relatively short walking paths - all very level and accessible to all kinds of walking abilities. There's also plenty of bird call, flowers, a tiny waterfall, two ponds fed Kimball Brook that you can apparently fish at, wooden bridges to cross them, etc. And did I mention lots...and lots...and lots...and lots of dogs. So, as a human: I probably will never come here again. But, if I were a dog: YES, PLEASE. Let's go for a double-u aye ell kay here EVERYDAY.

Both canine and human. Now if u and your dog are the out doorsy, fit fanatical types.. This is the place for you. Choices of trails. An amazing pond for the pups to swim in. I hear there is a second pond too. I did not find just a lazy enclosed off leash area (although all trails are off leash) which is why i knocked off a star. Its gorgeous too. If u can walk a 1/4 mile and ur pup can do its a must visit.
