This oval has one of the most beautiful outlooks in the Adelaide hills. Rug up if it's winter.

Uraidla And Districts Soldiers Memorial Park

A great example of multipurpose public space, a bushfire refuge and a strange yet functional…read moreexample of communism and bureaucracy. Like so much of our public land, the Uraidla And Districts Soldiers Memorial Park is on land donated to the community many many years ago. The big difference about this park is it remains community owned. The main positive of this is, unlike other public spaces, the park can not have sections sold off of it to generate short term income for the council of the day. The park is truly multipurpose, incorporating football, netball, tennis and cricket, as well as many community events including the annual Uraidla and Summertown Show and Sustainability Fair. Also, during bushfires the adjacent RSL building serves as a Country Fire Service command centre with the oval being used by emergency helicopters and vehicles. As one of the only 'bushfire safer' refuges in the area the park is of great emergency response significance. All of these groups activiely work together to keep the park maintained and functional. Sections of the park are also available for hire by the public for events and weddings, as are the show buildings, including the main hall and kitchen. The grounds themselves are well maintained (as they aren't dependant on the council) and are always undergoing improvements where ever possible thanks to the time donated by enthusiastic members of the community. Thanks to this, there are few places better to be in the Adelaide Hills on a summer's day than under a tree in the Uraidla and Districts Soldiers Memorial Park.

Shhh! It's a secret!…read more The Kenneth Stirling Conservation Park Group, consisting of 4 separate parks are all about conservation (almost no signage, lots of nature, very few people). Many Hills locals don't even know about the parks. Filsell Hill, the largest park in the group, is also the best hidden (and in my opinion, the most beautiful). The one main track through the park is only accessible through private property apart from one hidden entrance at the southern end of the park. The track, with many small dead-end tracks branching off of it, rises up out of forested valleys to follow a steep rocky ridge, offering views of the Onkaparinga Valley and hidden vineyards. Deer and kangaroos frequent the park, along with a wide variety of bird life, from big wedge-tailed eagles to tiny wrens and finches. Be careful not to stray out of the park boundaries, where the park begins and private property ends is not always well sign-posted.

Not worth your time - there are far more beautiful places in the hills to go without the worries…read more Wandered in through the hidden southern entrance, which is a slim track going straight up a hill; it then connects to the fire track that goes north to south, connecting to private property on each end. The private property issue is the big problem here. You can all too easily stray onto someone's land. I twice wandered into someone's land and past signs that (on the 'entrance' side, as I was going out) said 'property property', 'keep out', and 'trespassers prosecuted'. Most views are obstructed by the trees, and in general, the flora is your average Australian scrub. The exception was a very nice valley full of ferns near the northern end - again, on a track leading to private property. The government should either close this place down, or buy some more land alongside it and sign and fence the trails better.
