Cadwalader's Ice Cream parlour is the best ice cream and milkshake specialist in Cardiff…read more High praise, I know. But it's deserved. Cadwalader's has that old timey air of a business that legitimately cares about what it does, beyond making money. Their business ethos hangs on just being damn good at what they do and, not to make it sound gross or anything, but you can taste the effort that goes into making their product (again, just to make it clear, I'm not saying you can literally taste the effort. There's no hint of sweat or anything... Look, all I'm saying is it tastes really, really good). But that's pretty much par for the course. If you're going to open an ice cream parlour, you'd better make sure you sell ice cream that people want to eat. Fair enough. The reason this particular stall earns five stars is mostly due to the staff. The stall is never massively busy, so they're always happy to chat and are always lovely to chat to. Anyone can make ice cream taste good, so it's the extra things like a wonderful customer experience that makes it stand above all the rest.

With its flashy aesthetic and sprawling presence, it is the antithesis of neighbouring old man pubs such as The White Hart. Sporting a spacious rustic interior, equipped with a wooden floor, an array of comfortably spread out coffee tables and side sofas, customers will find themselves spoilt for choice in the seating department. The food menu is also wide ranging, boasting everything from cake (and lots of it) to baguettes to main meals. Teas, coffees and a multitude of soft drinks can also be purchased here. In the evening, the bar comes alive and the place takes on a European style drinking vibe. So if you find yourself in the area, and don't fancy supping ale in an old man's pub, try Grounded for a more...grounding experience.

Tucked away in the City…read moreUnited Reformed Church off Windsor Place, this charming little diner is the perfect hideaway for enjoying a coffee or quick bite to eat before work. With its muted colour schemes, low lighting and austere furnishings, Refectory Coffee Shop reminds me of what Thatcher-era Britain would have been like, and I mean that in the most complimentary way - I tire of glossy, contemporary chain coffee shops (that means you, Costa, Starbucks, and Cafe Nero), and often search for good ol' home-style food at modest prices. The ladies who man the shop are absolutely lovely. Not sure how busy it gets in the early hours and around lunchtime, but around 10 am, it was a quiet haven from the surrounding bustle of Queen Street, as a few patrons flipped through their daily newspaper and enjoyed cups of tea with their meals.

The menu is standard cafe fare with jacket potatoes, sandwiches, toasties and then hot meals as well. It's nothing cordon bleu but its hot and tasty and best of all really easy on the pocket! Get a tray and queue up to order and have a natter with the lovely ladies on the till, they make me smile everytime I go in! It's full of all sorts in here: local office workers, lots of older folk having a cuppa and groups of tradesmen sat outside usually! Also do breakfast fodder.

Today, whoever, I needed wifi quickly, so went in for a quick coffee and logged-on. The first thing I noticed was a lovely little back garden at the back. It is only small, 3 or 4 bench tables, but it was a really nice surprise. The shop itself is really small and decorated with dark wood. It has a very warm feel about the place. It is pretty basic, but I was quite surprised how much liked it. The coffee was delicious! I had a latte and it came in a glass mug with the bottom half milk and the top half coffee - so I had to stir it to mix it. Which I thought was a nice touch. But I'm a sucker for a gimmicky thing like that! The staff were lovely. After I ordered I realised I didn't have any cash on me. The women said it was fine to finish my coffee and run across the road to get cash out. There is nothing spectacular about Freshly Ground, but it is charming in its own right and the little back garden is a hidden gem for a summer afternoon!

Coffee and Muffins. They are a perfect combination aren't they? Well they don't get more perfect…read morethan when you visit BB's Coffee and Muffins. I will first start with the service and food. For me, the service is top notch! I haven't had a bad experience there yet, the staff are always friendly and very attentive to your order, so attentive that one staff member even asked if i wanted to upgrade the size of my latte (and I hate upgrading) but I did because she made it seem like a good idea, that's almost witchcraft, how did she do it? Anyway, witchcraft aside; the muffins are absolutely amazing. I can honestly say that if you are a muffin lover you will make this place your hot spot. Because they are freshly baked they taste divine. They're not just your conventional muffins either, I was there earlier today and they had a special 'Christmas crumble muffin' which looked lovely. Me, however went for the good old chocolate muffin. They have a great selection of hot and cold drinks too. Don't be put off by the number of seats there are because there is an even bigger section on the first floor. It's decorated in their own unique style and it's very easy to relax with your friends whilst enjoying that fluffy muffin you crave so much. It's great to go to if it is very busy in town because it is mainly quiet. This is good for some reasons and bad for others. I like quiet places because it makes it easier to relax but at the same time I hope it doesn't close because it's quiet. I want it to be around for a long time. BB's Coffee and Muffins is an excellent cafe that delivers on food and service wonderfully. The cafe itself has a nice atmosphere and you feel comfortable and never want to leave and eat all those muffins. But eating muffins all day couldn't be all bad. Could it?
