This local Roath branch is good, too, with equally capable coffee baristas serving a rich, smooth blend of espresso. It's also one of the best spots for lunch along Albany Road, with huge focaccias and those great chunky chocolate chip shortbread biscuits. So while the city centre branch has served me well for take away lattes on the run, this laid-back Roath branch is a great place to while away an hour or so on the comfy sofas. It's also open for fairly long hours, from 7.30am - 7pm on weekdays - so you can grab takeaway before work if you live in the area and pass it en route to work.

May be this is because of the lovely enclosed garden out the back, or the great coffee, or may be their well priced eminently edible food...? It's difficult to know. Get inside and the first thing you see are two wooden swings (yes swings) with a really nice chill-out windowsill with cushions to sit on. I'm actually sat on the windowsill as a type this and it's a really nice place to be! Much like the outside, the decor inside Playground is different to many other coffee shops close by; refreshingly different. There's lots of colour, swings and a few board games. It feels much more relaxing than your average chip board heavy coffee shop. The coffee itself is really good. I went for the house flat white which was quite sweet and really moreish. For me however it is not about the Barista of the Year awards, or the Michelin stars but being a shop for coffee - it is very much about what is in my cup. The coffee here is good. I like it. It is real and fresh, leaving an earthy grainy taste in my mouth. They also seem to know the difference between a latte and a cappuccino which is rare these days. The coffee is great. The staff are friendly and, on Saturdays, pretty cute too. Could I get the same coffee somewhere else for cheaper? From the supermarket? Probably. I suppose then that the extra few coins are not exclusively for what is in the cup.

The outside area, in-between the thick of Stokes Croft and the hub of Gloucester road, is one of the best places to be when the sun is out. There's about 8-10 benches in the large courtyard and it fills with the bohemian clientele you'd expect from this area, but also attracts the buggy brigade and a few Apple Mac workers. Inside is very thing you'd expect from a BTP; exposed brick work, writing on the wall, slightly scruffy staff and a quirky, cosy vibe. The cakes are great, coffee amazing, beers and spirits available for the evening - so it's easy to see why it's so popular.
