In a quaint little home on Orlando Avenue, they've been working on stiff muscles since 1997, established not long after I first arrived in Nashville. And yet, I hadn't heard of it. Thank heavens crowd-sourced Yelp has the power of sniffing out these gems around the city, because that's exactly how I found Basic Kneads! Even the name of the business is a clever as a hair salon! Satellite imagery from 1980 shows that this block indeed used to be a neighborhood of little homes, with this particular house being one of the few still intact. I had the pleasure of getting a massage from Jeff, a kind and empathetic man who knows exactly where the sore spots are, how much pressure to apply, and how to release those pesky tight muscles from head to toe. He's not just somebody who got a license in massage therapy and came to town. Jeff has worked in an impressive array of luxury resorts around the world, so you're really getting top notch technique and expertise! I get a massage monthly and I've had hundreds of massages in my lifetime. As a former massage therapist, I am unbelievably picky. That being said, I had a massage today with Jeff and it was just phenomenal. It was corrective, but not painful, and was super thorough for a 60 minute massage yet never felt rushed even once. It was the kind of massage that only a person with years of experience and training can give - technically proficient and still deeply relaxing. It was hands down one of the best massages I have ever had and I can't wait to go back! My first ever massage was at Basic Kneads, back in the 90s and I am so happy to have rediscovered them. This was my first massage in quite sometime as last year I was battling cancer, and I'm so happy to report I won that battle! I was a bit apprehensive and anxious given I was on the back side of chemo, radiation, more chemo, 2 surgeries and 4 ER visits. I received a gift card from a friend who frequents Basic Kneads. So I made an appt for a 90 minute massage. Paula, my masseuse was so welcoming, calming, friendly, and listened to my every concern. Although, our initial conversation was 15 - 20 minutes, I still received the whole 90 minutes on the table. She made me feel so comfortable, checked in with me through-out to make sure I was comfortable or if I needed anything extra. Just a wonderful experience all the way around. The cozy, cute little house is so inviting and once inside it's a wonderful atmosphere of calming music, cool art work, free tea, yummy smells, and welcoming smiles. Highly recommend! read more

4.5 I've been really stressed. Like, I didn't know how bothered I've been. But my back has been in knots and my jaw is permanently clinched. The mind's ability to heal and corrupt is real, y'all. So, I needed a massage. But more than a massage, I needed a therapist. I wasn't looking for a relaxing spa. I was looking for a trained therapist who knew how to cure my ills. I found it. I found her. Annette is the therapist I didn't know I needed. Basic Kneads is an in old home in/off White Bridge. It's tucked away on a side street and you have to be looking for it. Odds are you won't just run across it. I made an appt a couple of days before and since I was a new customer, I arrived early to fill out a questionnaire of what brought me in, what I enjoy in a massage, what I want to accomplish, etc. I really appreciated the thoroughness of the pre-massage appt. We walked back to the room, verified what I wrote on my sheet, Annette stepped out so that I could get ready and then we got started. It was incredible. We had a mostly silent session with heavy pressure and a lot of attention spent on my upper back. Annette had an intuitive sense for what I needed and how to best massage me. At the end of the session, we talked about my stress points, techniques I could use to self-massage, how to best recover from the session, and tips I can use to improve to reduce stress in my day to day (evidently my jaw is super tight and I spend my days and nights clenched; that was a sad realization). I'm, for sure, going to incorporate Basic Kneads into health routine. While the house is comfortable and has a good energy, you're coming here for a therapeutic massage and not hours upon hours of mimosas, robes, and hair-dos (there's a time and place for all of that). It's been a long time since I've gotten a massage so I had high expectations and this place did not disappoint. Basic Kneads is in a small place that looks like a house that was converted into a business. Thus, I felt immediately at home. If its your first time here you complete an intake form which will let your masseuse know any areas of pain you are feeling and which areas you want to focus on. You can even check a box to let them know whether you want conversation or silence, which I appreciated. I've gotten massages at other places in which they talk to me but I really didn't want to talk I wanted to just lay there so this was perfect. I had Gabi for a 1 hour full body massage. She applied the right amount of pressure and focused on all the areas I indicated on my sheet. She was great and I recommend her! read more

I've come here a few times for a massage and each has been better than the last! Both Janet and Alice are great, but I would trust anyone here based on my experience so far. TL;DR: would definitely recommend! Location: a quaint house turned small business right off of Charlotte Pike. Parking: there are a few spots in the front, but also plenty of parking spots in the back. Inside: incredibly quiet, cozy, and clean. The rooms are always dim, the perfect temperature (and the masseuse always asks if you're comfortable or would like the table to be warmer/cooler). They play relaxing, classic spa music throughout the appointment. Actual massage: I personally appreciate a very firm massage, but there's the option for light, medium, or firm on the form you fill out for your visit. I let them know I prefer a very firm massage as to work out knots from sitting at a desk all day. They check in periodically to make sure you're comfortable, the pressure is good, and focus on your areas of concern! read more

My boyfriend got me a gift certificate that I just let sit around, so when I unexpectedly had the afternoon off, I saw that there was an appointment available online and called to snag it! Hayes was amazing. I told him my areas of concern and he definitely focused on them, but did not neglect anything else. I like to be worked when I get a massage, so his pressure was on point. And the time did not fly by (in a good way), I actually was wondering the whole time if they'd booked me for a 90min by accident. He used ever minute of the hour. I had my first massage here with Janet and she was incredible! I didn't know about this place, I googled it and randomly found it and it was close to my house as well. Walk into a cute little white house and end up in a relaxing atmosphere where you are very well taken care of. The customer service is excellent, the paperwork is thorough so they can give you exactly what you need for a massage. I got up from the table for the first time in years and had no pain in my body and actually experienced a level of euphoria I've never had before. Book Janet anytime! My first impressions of this place were very good. The environment was beautiful and homey, they had me fill out a legit form, they had online scheduling, and their price is good. However, Linda was by far the most rushed massage therapist I have ever had. I understand that I gave her a lot to do in 60 minutes, but I explained how she should manage the time. I said to put a lot of attention into the neck and related areas (as that was exceptionally sore), and only get to the other areas if she had time left over. Well, she thought she could be superwoman and just charge right through to get to everything. Massage therapists who rush don't really get the big picture when it comes to massage. Massage is just as much about relaxation as it is about the physical elements. I can't be relaxed if someone rushes. It's weird when you're listening to typical relaxing spa music while someone is rushing. That spa music should guide her tempo. If she just went at a typical pace, only did the upper body, and said, "I'm sorry, that's all the time we have for today," I would have been okay with that. I get that there was a lot to do, and I would have scheduled 90 minutes if that was available that day. Better just to slow down, move at a pace that gets me to relax, and just do a good job on the most important areas. I can always come back for another massage later. Now, getting to everything is not without its merit, as I did feel eased up over the rest of my body walking out of the massage. However, it was not my primary goal. The next day and the day after, my neck and upper back went back to being just as sore, and I ended up having to get another massage elsewhere. I'm wavering between 2 and 3 stars. A week after the massage, my gut is telling me 2 stars. However, I think this place has more potential than I experienced. I would be happy to consider coming back, though with a different therapist, and update my review based on that experience. read more

Absolutely phenomenal. I was having significant issues with my back and shoulders and needed some deep tissue work. I had 4 sessions with Lindsay and 1 with Kirsten and both are excellent. They do effective deep tissue but you don't feel like you've been beat up afterward. They listen to your concerns and address your needs. Because I had Lindsay for multiple sessions, it was easy to see her thought process and how she progresses her treatments.. She incorporated various cupping techniques and stretching, and suggested stretches I could to on my own. She also discussed other incorporation of other elements like yoga and acupuncture. I felt like she was genuinely interested in my improvement and that she partnered with me to make that happen. I would highly recommend Lindsay and Kirsten!! read more

As a treat to myself (and because my boyfriend got me a gift certificate), I took Monday off of work and booked a 60 minute therapeutic massage with Lisa Hatcher. I didn't have a massage therapist preference, but I'm really happy with who I ended up with. Lisa H. was very professional and funny. The massage was wonderful too. It was a full body massage with peaceful music, some sort of orange mint lotion, low lights, hot towels on my neck and face AND she even threw in a sinus massage for my allergies. I went to this place because another Yelper that I know gave it 5 stars, so I figured that I'd give it a shot, and I'm soooooo glad that I did! I had just drove about 20 hours in a car with horrible suspension, and my back was killing me! I didn't want any of the frills of a massage; I just wanted someone to fix me. This seems to be something that is somewhat hard to find. It's like every single masseuse has their standard moves that they pull out, and that's it (e.g., start with your back, go to your legs and feet, flip you over and then go to your arms and back again). But this place seems to be much more customized, because as soon as I got there, Leslie (my masseuse) asked me exactly which areas she should focus on, and she even told me what she needed to incorporate while she was massaging me, based on what she felt. It was sooooo refreshing, because usually, massage therapists will ask you which areas at the beginning, but weirdly cover all areas anyways. Anyways, long story short, I came out of this place feeling like a million bucks! I'm very grateful to have found this place, and I cannot wait to go back! Also, one of my personal favorite parts is that no one pressured me into making another appointment or signing up for some membership after my massage! :) read more

I went for my first massage, ever and was naturally nervous and hesitant. Michelle instantly made me feel relaxed and comfortable. I opted for a silent session but made sure to tell Michelle about my problem areas. She was beyond fantastic in addressing those areas, while checking in about the pressure periodically. I've had neck and back problems for years and this is the first time I can remember not feeling tightness in those areas. Leslie did a great job. I have low back and SI joint issues, and she was very attentive to my needs. She is an excellent listener and communicator. The prices are very reasonable, and I love that I was able to get an appointment with just a few days notice as well. I took away a star because the location is horrible. It is convenient as far as close to major roadways, but getting out of there is nearly impossible. It is at the intersection of Charlotte Pike and White Bridge Pike just before you merge onto I-40. Leaving this place at 3 PM was a nightmare and pretty much undid the tension release I just received. Because of the location, I don't think I will be going back, but I do recommend them for their wonderful service. read more

An unassuming little house on the inside, a well-kept and cozy abode on the inside. As a frequent exerciser, doing yoga and barre or competitive running every day, and with the stress of a full time job and being a doctoral student, the muscles in my shoulders, neck, and calves get extremely tense and tight, causing discomfort and performance barriers. Since I moved to Nashville about six months ago, I've had two 90-minute deep tissue massages with Gabi and have not been disappointed. She really gets into the knots in my problem areas, and finds and works out kinks I didn't even know I had. The time flies by, and I leave feeling a thousand times better than I did when I walked in. The prices are reasonable, and I like that they use MindBody as their booking platform, which integrates seamlessly into my iPhone calendar.
