I never feared public speaking, I feared speaking without preparation. I felt confident when I had…read moretime to think things through, but if I was calleyyd on spontaneously, I froze. My inner critic would chime in: "You're rambling! You're not making sense! Hurry up!" And just like that, I'd lose my train of thought and sound anything but clear or confident. As someone pursuing speaking more seriously, I knew I had to get past this. I joined a local Toastmasters club, which helped with structure and delivery techniques, but it didn't get to the root. I didn't need to memorize a speech. I needed to feel confident grabbing the mic with no idea what I'm going to say, and still pack a punch with my message. I met Lynn when she stopped by my local Toastmaster club as a guest speaker. By the end of her workshop, I was speaking freely, no notes, no rehearsals. In less than an hour, she got me to trust myself, and my message came across clear and resonate. So, I joined her Level 1 course. I'll be honest, at first, I was hesitant. The exercises were simple, even a little "woo-woo" and I doubted if it would really change me. We practiced looking in the mirror to say affirmations. We marched around chanting, "I don't know what I'm going to say, but it's going to be great!" and various other fun things! But it worked. Week by week, those small practices paired with real speaking challenges rewired my brain. This class brought me to tears countless times. In 4 weeks, I grew more confident, more self-assured. For the first time, I believed that I could do this. I could trust that I knew what I wanted to say and didn't have to rely on perfect preparation to say it, and say it well. Lynn created an extremely safe, low-pressure container, that feels easy to do, yet the internal shifts and changes are monumental. Everyone in the class went from unsure, to confident. Our last session was so powerful. The new-found authority in the room was palpable. It also happened to fall on my birthday. The group, who by then felt like family, surprised me with a cake and a song. So nice! Lynn teaches from the heart. Her approach gently unearths the root of fear. A month later, I'm still applying what I learned. I'm leading meetings more clearly, toasting at dinner, raising my hand to speak, looking myself in the mirror with kindness before judgement, and, most importantly, trusting myself more than ever. Throughout the process Doris did everything she could to help me, even in her off time when we weren't meeting. I remember how I would be working on my speech at the all hours of the day, and half of the time she would be on there too, commenting helpful suggestions. She spent hours looking over my speech giving me notes on how to have a clearer, stronger message. Then once the speech was perfected we would go through memorization tips, like grouping the information in small sentences in order to memorize chunks of the speech faster. Finally she guided me on how to speak with clear, big posture, a loud voice, and how to move throughout a stage. I remember if I didn't start strong enough she would act out how I looked, and make me try again, it was extremely helpful. I highly recommend Doris if you have a big presentation, or anything that involves talking in front of people.

I was delighted to find out she is in the same city as me and I signed up on her one-on-one class for 15 sessions. On the first class we worked on breathing techniques, postures and how to project voice. We took a before vs after video and it was literally night and day difference. My voice was much stronger and I sounded more confident. Over the next several sessions we worked on vowels, consonants, diphthongs. She would listen to my pronunciation carefully and provide me feedback. We'd drill those tricky sounds over and over until I got it right. The last few sessions we worked on more advanced topics such as reductions, different T pronunciations, stress and intonation. Finally I recorded a video, putting everything I learned together and review with Rebecca. I got valuable feedback and ideas that I can use to refine and improve my pitch. Rebecca's strength lies in she can identify students weaknesses pretty quickly and provides target exercise and suggestions for students to work on. Both times I…read moreopted for Hybrid courses, since I would be back in the Bay part of summer, and I definitely recommend adding that option if you learn better in-person. I was typically the only student who came in-person since most students take the class remote, but being able to be in the same room as the instructor helped my motivation during class immensely. Rhya and Nicky are both so kind and knowledgeable. You can tell that they are not only experts in the language (as native speakers from the Philippines) but in pedagogy. As a community college professor myself, I admire how organized the class was and how welcoming they are. The other students in my recent class were highly motivated and excited to learn Tagalog for various reasons. Some like me grew up with Filipino parents but never learned Tagalog, while others are in relationships with Filipinos/Filipino Americans and want to engage more deeply with the community through language. Overall, SJLC has been a positive experience, and I am excited to take the next (and last) level of Tagalog 3. The current rates for Tagalog (7 weeks, weekly meeting for small group) is $399 remote, $419 in person, and $449 hybrid -- note: this is a "Prime" class, so it is priced a bit higher since the instructor is a native speaker with 5+ years of teaching experience).

I've been wanting to learn Cantonese for a while now. I think there are very few places that offer…read morelessons in this language. I signed up for Cantonese 1, it's a 7 week, 1.5 hour hybrid class, and I went in person. I had another classmate in person, and two who joined online. I really enjoyed our classes, getting to practice speaking with the instructor and my classmates. The lessons are packed with a lot of vocabulary, grammar structure, and conversational phrases. There is limited writing exercises, and not much reading learning, but I am okay with this, and perhaps it is more emphasized in later levels. The instructor Dolphin is very supportive and patient. She would bring in photos and props to class to help us learn. She would also would tell anecdotes about Cantonese media that we could check out in our free time. I highly believe that this is worth the investment, it is more interactive than language learning apps, and you get real feedback. I am able to talk to my mother and some friends, and they can actually understand what I am trying to get across. I am planning to take Cantonese 2, and would suggest anyone who is interested in learning Cantonese, to check out this school!

Both sons bonded well with the teachers; it has been hard to say good bye! When we left we got a card signed by all the teachers, the director and the assistant director. We are grateful to everyone for the wonderful care that our sons received, despite the short stay.

There were vacancies, so we enrolled immediately. It was our first time taking to kids to any kind of childcare, so Jenny understood us very well. She texted us pictures of the kids during their first few days there, which put us at ease. Seeing their happy faces in the pictures brings truth to the name of this daycare! Jenny cooks very healthy food for the kids - much better than the cafeteria-type foods at large daycares/preschools. She also sends weekly e-mails with pictures of the kids, of the meals, and of the activities that the kids do during the week. I honestly miss this very much! On special occasions, she sent videos of the kids singing songs. Whenever we picked up the kids, the kids were always happy. We were very, very comfortable with Jenny and her staff. Her staff were just as loving and caring as Jenny. It was also the sweetest thing to hear our children singing "Twinkle, Twinkle" in Mandarin when they're at home! My favorite thing about Jenny is all the love and attention she puts into caring for the children. She treats the children like her own. Jenny is so cheerful and upbeat. No wonder the kids are happy! We owe Jenny many thanks and hugs, and we miss her very much!
