We were intrigued by the idea of painting and pouring a candle, even though we aren't artistic by any means and felt a bit out of our element. We were "walk-ins" and when we arrived, they set us up with paints and materials, and showed us the books to choose a design with step-by-step instructions. Beverages were available for purchase - we had cans of soda (2 for $3, very reasonable!). The vibe is creative and welcoming, and the staff are friendly, encouraging, and make you feel artistic even if you're not. There's space for both scheduled sessions and walk-ins, as well as painting classes (one started after we arrived). Everything felt very organized and cohesive. Once we finished our paintings, a staff member guided us through pouring our candles - we even mixed scents, and they smelled amazing! After pouring, we left and returned about two hours later to pick up our finished candles. We had a fantastic time. This was a fun, creative, and inexpensive experience - just $63 total for the two of us to each paint and pour a scented candle, plus two beverages. Highly recommend! We were in the very front row, so up close and personal to all the action on stage. What was wild was that we got our tickets the day before and that's when a ton of the closer row tickets became available. We snagged ours at the cheapest price and that came as quite a surprise, it made me wonder if they intentionally held a ton of tickets until the last minute or if there were just that many cancellations or something, that was a bit confusing. But our experience at the Civic Center was incredible! The space is very open and is sort of like one gradually increasing level from the stage. There's no mezzanine or balcony, but you will just go up the stairs to your row depending on how far back you are. The bathrooms were also great and plentiful, so there weren't any crazy lines for women's or men's bathrooms during the intermission. The Civic Center is located in the heart of downtown Des Moines. There is a ton of parking structures and lots available all around for very reasonable prices. I believe our parking fee was only $5, which for a major city is pretty unheard of! The Civic Center lobby also has a few bars that you can pick up drinks at! I got a Coke in a souvenir Des Moines Symphony cup and was able to take it into the center with me. In my mind, this is just wild because I don't know that I've ever taken a refreshment into a concert put on by a symphony, so that was a delight! Normally, photos and videos are not allowed in the Civic Center, but because of the nature of this concert in particular, they were actually highly encouraged this time! We had a great time and I'd recommend checking out what performances are going on while you're in Des Moines to see if any pique your interest! I get to review my one visit! Concert in the summer of '24…read more I cant believe that this is my first time here since this was built in 2019. It is rare that we go to an outdoor concert but I was able to find one that the hubby was interested in. We went early as I feared there would be a huge line to get in. We went about an hour before the concert. Came from the north on MLK and turned right into the park. Parking was extra and they lined us up on the lawn. There were people who looked like they had been there for awhile and enjoying the weather doing a little tailgating. We got our vehicle situated and pulled out our chairs. We walked only a little bit to security. You need to remove your chair from the carry bag and not take any big bags inside. The venue is nice open space. Flat ground. The Amphitheater was not even used, they had another stage set up in front of it. An area marked off for standing admission so you can be close to the stage. We opted for the general admission which put you further back and could sit. You snag a spot on the lawn and claim it. Food trucks and venues all around for your grazing pleasure. Everyone at our concert was respectful. The weather was perfect. We enjoyed the people watching. Had a couple drinks and enjoyed it all. We were far enough back that even with people standing up close to the stage we could still see and enjoy. The getting out of the parking venue is a pain. Only 1 major exit on our side and hundreds of cars trying to get out. Thank goodness for the traffic help otherwise we would have been there forever. It did take about 45 minutes to get out of the parking lot, but once back on MLK it was normal traffic.

I admit I rarely go to outdoor concerts so take that with a grain of salt. The amphitheater is located in Water Works Park. We went for the Ben Folds/Violent Femmes concert. Traffic was backed up on Fleur which did not anticipate. It was a 10 minute or so delay. Parking cost $10 which really was outrageous considering I did not see any actual parking lot! We parked along a road, then walked to join a long line of people waiting to enter. I enjoyed listening to the band we came to see. But since the place is brand new I have a few ideas for what could have made it better- Parking of course The whole venue is flat, why did they not slope the general admission area slightly to improve the view?

I didn't catch the whole first show, but there was a photography show by Dan Welk, Performances by local musicians, a special Opera performance, and then an open Mic to follow.. Also there were free pieces of pie, lemonade, and bottles of water! It was kid friendly and fun. I guess look for their facebook for upcoming performances! Oh I forgot to mention it was free too!

They did massive improvements, cleaned the place up, increased advertising and patron interaction, and still continue the slow renovation process. Not to mention their sensory-friendly viewings, which are a great idea! These are all the positive things, which admittedly are big! The family worked together and made the theater desirable again. However, with the Bleeker family being a very church-motivated bunch, the majority of the movies they play are Christian-focused, inspirational, or preachy. What I really hoped to see come of this theater, besides just playing the Hollywood hits, were maybe a few indie movies, or more Oscar-based viewing. Perhaps some revisiting of some classics or cult favorites. Special viewings of the flicks we all know and love. As a big movie theater enthusiast, who really enjoys the whole experience, I really hope to see this turn around a bit. And I truly believe I am not the only one that feels this way. Perhaps show the religious movies on a particular day and time specifically for that crowd? And put the rest - Hollywood hits, indie/Oscar-nominated movies, classics/favorites - out there for your mainstream patrons.
