Lime Wood - Pavillion 1

The property is bucolic and only 20 minutes from Southampton in gorgeous rolling countryside and forest. There were horses grazing in the fields. Four of us arrived for an early dinner and the chance to have a drink and tour the grounds. To be honest, we were underdressed, but they treated us like visiting dignitaries showing us around, checking our car and codes offering us boots if we wanted to walk in the rainy woods and allowing us to occupy a table at the bar for two charming hours of drinks and tea. The place is exquisite. The only fault it would have as a wedding venue would be the arguments about which spot is the prettiest to take the pictures. And then there's the restaurant, headed by chefs, Angela Hartnett, and Lukas holder. We were familiar with Angela from her television Chef career. The experience did not disappoint. The pasta courses were among the best we've ever had with sixty month aged Parmesan on creamier risotto, beautiful tagliatelle with lamb and Morels on gnocchi. The complementary Arancini came in three flavors and we each each other a favorite. The duck was delicious and the braised lamb was done beautifully. We shared the Pavlova with strawberries and whipped cream, and it was a nice light and to a really exquisite meal. I would highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner or if you really want to indulge a spa weekend rooms treatments, food, and all. My review would not be complete without mentioning Frank, who was so welcoming when he greeted us and handled the car and coats and earnestly showed us around the grounds, and Finn are wonderful, handsome young waiter, who was very professional and still friendly and charming. Thank you to both of them.

Limewood offers a beautiful escape if you are anywhere in the Southwest of England. My favourite…read morething that limewood offers is its beautiful internal decor and external grounds. Once you walk in you will be impressed with their gorgeous fresh floral arrangements, the roaring fires, the detailed wallpaper, the plush furniture and the well curated artwork. I've never been lucky enough to spend the night but I can comment on their food in the restaurant. This past week I had their Easter set menu. I started off with their goat cheese plate. It was a beautiful soft cheese with fresh capers and other vegetables with pesto drizzled over it. It was beautifully presented and tasted light and delicious. It was one of those starters that gets you excited for the next course. For my main I had rare Beef. With every roast you have roasted vegetables- the beets were perfection- and Yorkshire pudding. I loved mine and I could not stop scooping veggies onto my plate. To top it off I had the chocolate mouse which was rich and smooth. With the country atmosphere, warm interior and delicious food you know I'll be back again. Just waiting for the next opportunity to justify it.

My plan was to have a weekend with my partner, my children , grand children and sisters and their husbands (Total 31 people in all) with a lunch on the Saturday with 10 more relations who could make the journey and back in a day. As it happened the numbers were ideal as we were able to use all the bedrooms and have the hotel to ourselves for the weekend, with a few of the people staying a few extra days before and after. The atmosphere was very relaxed and every one had a fantastic time. It was a great opportunity for my grandchildren (teenage or a bit older) to get to know each other and have fun together - some live abroad and others at some distance from each other. The lunch on the Saturday went off very well with everyone very much at ease. The food was very good with a varied menu that I had agreed in advance with Tim the owner and the Dining Room suited our number very well. The next day we celebrated the 60th birthday of my son in law who had driven over with his family from Austria and we had another celebratory lunch, this time there were 17 of us and again we had a lovely meal. The hotel rooms were very comfortable and there was enough flexibility to have a few extra beds for some children. Tim and his team were very friendly and helpful and made everyone very welcome. A special mention to Helena and Angie, and Matt the chef. Highlight for me were the lunches and also the breakfasts where everyone was able to mingle very happily in a totally relaxed atmosphere. For me it was the highlight of my year and I have to thank Tim and his Team for making it such a happy and memorable time

The staff were efficient and a good balance of informal/formal. The food was great. This hotel offers so much with it being in such a great location for outdoor pursuits, however, they have their own lovely grounds if you fancy a bit of a walk. Look out for the summer when I am sure lunch and dinner will be served on the terrace.

If you have mobility issues, let them know at booking time- as there would be great difficulty with the stairs & hallways if you had walking or balance issues. (Hint: Room #1 is larger and next to the front & the pub.) Clean room, modest furnishings, a bit worn, but clean. The bath had a small stand up shower, but the water was hot after a long day. TV, hairdryer, clothes iron, water kettle & tea service - all provided. Also the location is very close (short walk) to the city center and Salisbury Cathedral, with lots of eating & pub options. Morning breakfast buffet (extra) was good & filling, with hot fresh eggs, meats, cheeses, beans, toast, jellies/jam, juices, teas & coffee. Worth the dosh in my humble opinion. The bar was a nice snuggery, but the selection was limited in offerings. Go for convenience & location, and if the weather is good, eat in the courtyard and pet the feral but friendly black cat that roams the hotel. Overall, it wasn't a bad visit, and I'd probably stay again, but I'd much prefer a larger room in future. Recommended, but with care on room selection, B+

The clubs don't shut down until 3:30 AM and then all of the club goers hit the street for food, fighting and being loud. If they are staying in the hotel, they are loud in the hallways. It never ends. We got more sleep in our car than we did in the hotel room. Our rooms should have never been booked
