Honestly, everything about this place sucks except the location. The food is absolutely horrible. Like everything we ordered was bad. The ordering system is stupid. They want to charge like they're a full service restaurant, but they aren't. Weird. The food is pretty good--think tacos as tapas. Small two bite portions. The service is fine--but designed to be impersonal. They suggest you order off your phone. That's sort of a bummer way to kick off an experience. We had a party of five--everyone's order came out at different times. One person at a time. That also added to making it a poor experience. Definitely a nice place--and waitstaff was pleasant--but it strikes me as a concept and process that is void of the personal touch. A chain. Go kick it at the local taqueria instead. read more

I was anticipating my second visit to Bartaco. I went once before with my brother and sister and we were all happy with the ambiance and service and the food. This visit did not deliver like the first time. It was as though corporate training had left, and management and kitchen just isn't ready to keep the quality where it should be. Service and ambiance is still great but the food is not anything I would look forward to return for. In fact my family all agreed that next lunch and movie at Birkdale we will eat somewhere else. Soft shell crab taco and oyster taco (both so good on initial visit) are gone from the menu. This visit tacos, tuna tatami and sesame rib steak, both were dry and overcooked. This is my second time here and I am less than impressed. Both times the online ordering has not worked and service is slow. The tacos are about the size your palm for $4!! And they are subpar at best and very oddly spicy. Their pricing could be justified if they were a full service restaurant but they are not close to that. My best friend and I had dinner here on a Monday night around 6:30-7. We sat at the bar. We were completely ignored. The couple next to us sat down about 5 minutes after us and had their drinks and food before we were even given water. Finally, the manager came out of the kitchen and got us water and took our order. As it is required, he took our credit cards to start the tab for our orders and then mixed them up. So when we went to pay, it was incorrect. The bartender who printed the receipt was extremely condescending and told us it wasn't a big deal since it was only a dollar or two off. I have been here a few times now and had a good experience at a regular table with the staff. I went recently and sat at the bar with friends and it was not the same experience! The bartenders didn't acknowledge us at all, and when I finally got one of their attention, he was really rude. All we wanted to do was have a drink and eat dinner, and it seemed like we were bothering him to do that. Still actually confused why his attitude was so rude towards us. They acted like we were unwelcome morons when we wanted paper menus and to actually order from a waitress and pay a waitress vs using their entirely online qr setup. Can't really comment on food outside of trips at other locations. Have attempted to dine there on four separate occasions without luck. Each time there are empty tables, however, told 30-45 minute wait. Finally asked why such a long wait with tables clearly open. Response received "we want the best experience for each customer". Is that code for not enough staff? Told not the case and they do care about customers....not sure I'll make another attempt. Too many other options and life is short. read more

I was pleasantly surprised with Bartaco. I am full blooded Mexican from Southern California, and I know good Mexican food. To my surprise, I was told Bartaco is a fusion of Mexican and Asian cuisine. I was still cautious on how good it would be. The Guacamole tasted better than it looked, and the two steak tacos were really good. I got a tiny Kale Caesar salad which was also great. The spicy margarita was fantastic and all freshly made. The vibe and atmosphere made me feel like I was in a restaurant in NYC or LA. Was a very cool place to eat at. Prices are a tiny bit on the higher side, but definitely worth it. I don't mind paying if the food is that good. Lexi and Matthew attended my visit at the bar and were really kind and very helpful. I have one tiny critique and one small critique. Tiny critique-I didn't like having to write my order on a food list provided. It was simple, but I would rather just tell a server my food order. My small critique is the food presentation. It was a little lackluster and didn't match how great everything else was. Felt that there could be more effort put into the presentation. I would give Bartaco an overall 4.5, but yelp wont let me give a half a star. read more

If I could leave 0 stars, I would. I arrived to pick up a to go order at the time provided on the email I received. After waiting some time, I asked an employee about my order and was told the ticket was lost, but the manager was working on it. When I spoke with the gentleman that was identified as a manager and explained I'd waited 20 minutes, he argued with me like a combative 2 year old. When I showed him the time on my email, he literally stated, "Sorry, I can't read." I paid $27 for 4 tiny tacos that were mediocre at best and then experienced the lowest level of customer service I've ever encountered. Food is just ok for what it costs. Birkdale has been starving for new restaurants so the wait is always like 2 hours on a weekend...and then it runs into 3 and a half hours. All kinds of empty tables but they can't figure out how to run a restaurant. Management sucks. Buyer beware...over 200 hundred bucks for tacos for a family of four. The food was mid (not nearly enough for a meal). They had no cheese dip and the chips for dipping into sauce were like tostada shells. The atmosphere was nice. The margaritas were very disappointing. First visit. Ambiance - loud; typical fun bar setting, difficult to talk over noise during peak time. Service was quite good with system of putting card up that alerts server to come over. Manager took our additional orders three times - initial server never returned, Food: very flavorful. Everything the four of us ordered was spicy. Portions are very small. Tacos are about 3 1/2" in diameter. For example, my shrimp taco had 3 baby shrimp and my oyster taco had two very small oysters, each the size of 1/2 an oyster at a seafood restaurant. Both tacos had excellent flavor. The Brussel sprout taco was a big hit with the table! All four of it gave it two thumbs up! Would have ordered a bowl of them if offered as a side. Also recommend the tahini pineapple dish. We were shocked that I was charged $8 for my ice tea! $8 for tea - really? Everything is fresh but like other places in Birkdale Village, items are pricey. This will limit our return visits. Bartaco is definitely is worth a visit. Will be back to try the bowls and other flavors of tacos.... but with water! read more

I really, really wanted to like this newest restaurant in Birkdale Village. There was a lot of hype about how Charlotte has been waiting for a Bartaco. I understand it is new and service was just OK but I can handle that. The food was subpar. They tell you that the tacos are one or two bites which is true. They emphasize how each taco is representative of the cuisine that it comes from and they make you think it is going to be incredibly flavorful. I ordered the crispy shrimp taco and asked if it was hot spicy. I was told it was not and it burned my mouth. Plus, it tasted like cardboard. No real flavor. I also ordered the Caesar Kale salad with shrimp on top. It was just a big glob and the kale was drenched in dressing, cheese, and more dried up tiny shrimp. ( and I like a lot of dressing.)My friend thought her food wasn't good either. So, maybe I'll go back in a year if they're still around to see if the taste of the food has improved because it was not inexpensive I was so disappointed. read more

Obviously we're out of step with the consensus here so FWIW. The food and cocktails were good but not great, overpriced in my experience and we go out for dinner 3 times/week. We had a (very) small guac, 2 cocktails, 5 (tiny) tacos, 3 sides (2 esquites, black beans) - over $70 without our tip. Not worth that. Realized when we got home they'd charged us for a large guac. Cocktails, guac and esquites were good. Taco fillings were warm on cold tortillas? Black beans were soupy and lukewarm at best. Servers were all pleasant but service is disjointed, 4-5 people came to our table, little coordination if any. All the food showed up at once, before cocktails. When we asked the runner about our cocktails, she said "I'm not a drink runner." Huh? After a few seconds she came back and asked what we had, and offered to go find out. Better. You can order through an app, or fill in a menu check sheet to give to a server - not sure why there are two options. They're overrun with business having just opened, it's a place to be seen, we probably won't go back - too many clearly better options in our experience. read more

First off, this place is a vibe! Music is great and the decor was so cute and beachy. Came in on a Friday night. I knew it was going to be busy. Waited about 45 mins for a table for 2. We got a drink at the bar while waiting, bartenders Lee and Ryan were super nice and drinks were fresh and delicious. Once we sat down we were met with waters and Maddy who was super knowledgeable about the menu and the two ways of ordering. I love that they have the traditional way of ordering as an option but the QR code/App is super trendy, fast and efficient. Didn't need to flag down a server to order another pork belly taco (because they are BOMB!) or to see what my bill was before ordering more drinks (Paloma was chefs kiss!). Indira, Keenan and Zac are a dream team, they all came to my table at different times of the night to make sure we were enjoying food, drinks etc. Chef Pedro even greeted me in passing and thanked me for enjoying his food! So glad they are open and can't wait to return! read more
