I visited the Pikesville Barnes & Noble location on Saturday to take advantage of the highly anticipated Criterion Collection sale. After nearly 30 minutes of browsing and narrowing down my wish list I decided upon two different DVD titles. Very happy with my selection, I arrived home to find myself in a completely different mood. The first DVD was perfect. Upon opening the second DVD, I noticed that the paper and plastic of the cover/ case was ripped and cut up fairly severely. My mood dropped further when I opened the case and saw that the plastic of the actual case was busted and cracked. Without a worry or second thought, I returned to the location the next day to swap the damaged item for a new one. I was very quickly shut down with a response best summed up as, "Sorry, you should have checked it before buying it. Most people do." I was told there were no other copies of the title I had purchased. My options were: 1.) Order a new copy and wait for it to be shipped in 2.) 10% off due to damage 3.) Suck it up, Buttercup Not really the level of service I had expected from a company like Barnes & Noble. Really, 10% is not a comparable compensation for the damage of the product. Maybe I'm crazy, but realistically the offer to exchange the item for a different title of equal value should have been an option. I have had nothing but great experiences at this location in the past. I guess that's what is so upsetting. As far as the damaged item, there was not really any signs that it was imperfect while it was sealed in its' plastic wrap. I can understand "checking" a product before purchasing it, like a book or magazine (something that can be skimmed through for possible defects). But something sealed in packaging? A bit harder to "check". While this damaged item may not be any employees' fault; May not be the store's fault. I do expect a certain amount of quality from a company like Barnes & Noble. I've never even had the thought of checking an item before purchasing it before. That's how highly I thought of this company. For a company who presents themselves in such a high manor, I at least expected the decency of a replacement or exchange for a mistake on someone else's part. End of the day, I'll still return to this location as it's the only one near me that offers a selection of Criterion titles, but believe me... I'll definitely be inspecting every nook and cranny of future possible purchases. Ps. The reason physically media stores are closing at alarming rates, is because when it comes to customer service in situations like these, Amazon kicks your ass. Update: There was another copy of this title in-stock, they just didn't care enough to look or take the time to complete a return/exchange

All I can say is thank for still being in business and creating a spot where I can get some quiet time and work remotely. The cafe and book selections are awesome. I throughly enjoy the small perks of having a B&N membership and the strong WiFi. The staff is always available and helpful and I found some pretty cool deals on fiction and non fiction books.

Just another Barnes & Noble to me. Endless books, most genres available. The kids have their section to read and play. If you can't find a book the people at the customer service desk will be more than happy to help you find it. If they don't have it they can order it for you. The cafe has interesting treats and little sandwiches. I think that have a sandwich and soup combo for lunch too. Stop by and see what they are offering. Customers also may have experienced the "Nook" which is your digital tablet library.

Very good business practice if you ask me.

I stopped into the cafe to use the internet and get a coffee, but I could not find an electric outlet for my laptop.

Secondly, the young woman working in the café (where I got a venti frappuccino) was *very* friendly.

Located in the Hampden section of Bmore, Atomic Books would easily satisfy the inner book nerd in you (*raises hand...). Upon entering, the ambiance was chill with music playing over the speaker with just enough volume to not get in the way of perusing the incredible book collection. The books are sectioned according to genre, which makes for ease in looking for a specific topic. They have a magazine section as well with titles you won't find in an ordinary newsstand (a magazine titled "Bomb"?.... I'm impressed). The cost of the books varied, but was not so to bust your budget. They also have a selection of comic books in addition to t-shirts and items with the Atomic Books logo. The staff were pleasant and customers who came in seemed to be locals supporting a great small business. I liked that. And don't forget I mentioned a bar....located in the rear....serving adult libations. Can you imagine yourself purchasing a favorite book and settling in at one of the seats in the bar sipping on your favorite drink? Or playing the video game back there? I could and would have...if I had the time! All in all, a cool neighborhood bookstore/bar to chill out, grab a book, and a drink.

All the books were reasonably priced, and service was quick and efficient when checking out. We had time to kill before a dinner reservation nearby so we walked in to see if we could find a book to bring with us to the beach. After searching through the shelves and seeing all that Atomic Books has to offer, my husband and I both found something that piqued our interest. I love shopping small and supporting local, and Atomic Books has classic Baltimore charm mixed with the unique punk vibes of Hamden. The next time I'm around grabbing a bite, I think I'll stop in and buy another book to enjoy.

Every time I walk in EP, it's the aroma that always make me happy and relaxes my soul. There's this…read moreamalgamation of varying body oils, incense and soaps that truly permeate the air and this fragrant heady aroma that is absolutely intoxicating. My mission: to get raw Shea butter bc everywhere I've gone has refined Shea and I want the vitamins & nutrients raw Shea gives. EP is such a place to get authentic and organic products w/o all the bells & whistles of pretty packaging. It's just really good stuff!! When I tell you no one there gives a crap, believe it. This place has been around 40+ years!!! And u can tell. There is and always has been a type of air that is given off by the employees when you enter. It's as if, 'you should know what's in here and what it's for and how to use it already... and if you don't... ah well'. I get and can't appreciate the hands off approach. I hate nothing more than a pushy salesperson. That's not what's happening in here. It's more of an indifference to anything. This go around, as has always happened here, I had a few questions. The employees seem out off by having to stop looking in their phones to actually answer a question. So after the eye roll and the sigh, I ask... and as is always the case, the question is replied to with complete indifference ['If you want it, get it. If you don't... cool... but put it back where u got it. I ain't movin']. That's always been my 'turn off' w/ this place since I started going in the 90s. Sadly, EP has been one of the only stalwarts that has stood the test of time in the area. Granted, they have good genuine products in stock. Fantastic body oils, tinctures, lotions, soaps, incense, teas, fabrics, art, sculptures a literal library of wonderful Afro centric literature, etc... it's all there. And if it isn't, they can prob get it for you. But it's the 'indifference' for me. I'm sure it works for them bc they've been the same way for 20+ years. While the price points may be a lil higher than expected, taking into account that they are a specialty shop catering to a a specific need/ demographic, the pricing is definitely justified - especially in this market w/ so many businesses closing. I do hope EP stays around for a long time to come. I just wish the employees gave just an iota about what they're selling in the shop (lower level).
