If you have any sort of complicated situation and need a guardian ad Litem (GAL) do not use Chris. He is currently on probation with the Kansas bar for issues related to his conduct and interactions with opposing counsel/GAL. Because of his probation, he is not well positioned to pushback against a GAL and do what is necessary to represent your interests firmly. My experience with him echoes the complaints that got him on probation. There is a general lack of organization and preparation. After discussing with other local attorneys, and specifically asking if his reputation could be jeopardizing my case I was told - YES. Like other review below I've been told I have reason to file a complaint about the way my case has been handled. I did my research before retaining him however the probation had not hit the news yet. I reached out to this law firm after being told they specialized in father's rights and would work with people on the retainer costs. They asked for $100 to be paid before speaking to any lawyer and said if one were to be retained the $100 would roll over into the retainer. This was said as if that would make a dent in the retainer they would ask. They did not/ will not mention that they will ask for 50 times that amount to retain them. It honestly shocked me to think they claim to specialize in father's rights and are asking for $5000 down. I would assume they know the average American doesn't have that lying around waiting for the day they'll need legal counsel. Morally, they would be doing the bare minimum to be upfront about what they will expect financially before they take any money from anyone, especially knowing that person is already going through a difficult situation legally. I can't speak to their abilities in a court room but, at very least, their ethics are lacking. They wasted my time and omitted crucial information, thus stealing income needed to support my family. All for a 20 minute phone call which, would not have been longer than 5 minutes or happened at all, if they were up front from the start. At least a fourth of said call consisted of them asking for more money. They should be transparent about what they will require BEFORE potentially making difficult situations worse for people seeking help. read more

Every time I asked him a question he asked me a question back instead of answering it. He acts like a frat boy with a bunch of inappropriate shooting and basketball metaphors. Horrible experience. Do not hire this firm. I was embarrassed to have this law firm represent me for a PFA order. The attorney was filling in for my attorney and he knew absolutely nothing about my case. He actually made things worse for me. I would have done a better job representing myself. I wound up rescinding the PFA on my own because I couldn't trust my legal counsel to protect me. I thought I was paying $400/hour to be protected by an established firm. As the Law firm tried to get my post removed, because of not being a customer or involved. First I was a customer and have documents to prove it, Secondly during my friends divorce I was made to sign a legal document since I was with her and involved in the whole process. Since I was hearing everything from phone conversations that Chris contacted me, to in office meetings about her divorce, and also they copied me on all emails, and took my payments to be applied to her account. The office manager was very happy to discuss anything to deal with her bill, letting me know about court, and probably the worst part was he asked me to take funds from my trust and put them towards my friends divorce bill. During the 'meeting of creditors' Mr.Barnds joined and kept calling the trustee 'your honor' and was corrected four times! He admitted that he knew nothing about this part of the law, and made a foul of himself! I had the absolute WORST experience with an attorney at this firm. In fact, because of him & his behavior, lack of respect or service & now, obsession with trying to take more money from me (that I don't have BECAUSE of his ineffective job), I am in the middle of a divorce from an abusive man who's been able & allowed to ramp up everything he can to make things even worse, so he has. I had a lot on interaction with Barnes Law. My boyfriend Sam was a client of David West. He has also given a review of them.You can see that review on their google reviews. It is not allowing me to post my review on google about them. Everything he said is true and did happen. I was at every meeting and court date. I was there to hear every phone call. So, I have every right to give my opinion of the interaction I had with Barnes Law. I do know that they do not like when people give bad reviews. They turn into bullies and threaten to take legal action on you for stating your opinion. The way my boyfriend was treated was not okay. David West told us from the start that he does not take many clients, because he wants to make sure he can focus on our case. Which turned out to be not true. He never once fought for us. He allowed the other lawyer and Judge to state things about his client that were never true. He never objected to this false information he just let them put false information out there. David West also put wring information about that he was just told 30 minutes before a court hearing. He did not do any prep for our case. We were frustrated with the whole process. I feel like they just wanted out money and they would just do a sub par job for us. Which is awful because we were fighting for equal rights for my boyfriend's son. David West made this case go to places that it should have not ever gone. We are now trying to pick up the pieces of the destruction David West did to us. The was we were treated is not okay and I have had experience with child custody lawyers. A good google search will tell you if they have had any problems in the past. I wish I would have done that in the beginning, but we need a lawyer quickly. I guess this is what you get for not do your research and relying on their 5 star reviews they had. I know now that they bully and threaten you if you give a bad review. That is why they had a 5 star review. So, if you are looking for a good child custody law I would really do my research before picking them. Also, just looking over their reviews. Some of their five star reviews have the same last names of employees that work for Barnes law. I just did a quick google search and found this information out.
