The atmosphere here belies the quality of food.
With its bright lights and green and white 1980s-style decor, you might expect the food to be mediocre. But it's not. And the menu is keeping up with the 2010s.
We're not looking strictly at health food here. It's a traditional Welsh/English restaurant, which specializes in fish and chips, roast beef feasts, Sunday carvery meals. All very decadent and not a whiff of vegetarian amongst those dishes.
However, this restaurant also has a large selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes. Also, some of their regular dishes can be served vegetarian or vegan style, and if you wish to have your meal as such, there are signs on the walls with big letters requesting you let your wait staff know that's what you want. Barnacles also has vegan desserts, like their Chocolate and Vanilla Ice Cream Sundae. So they do know there's a great need and demand for non-meat and dairy meals.
I enjoyed eating here so much, that I came back a second night for dinner.
The first night I decided to have their Fish and Chips with came with a side of your choice and Traditional Tea with cream. For the side dish I picked the Mashy Peas.
Everything was quite good and as you would expect.
Wanting Yorkshire Pudding since I'm in the UK, I decided to try it here. It's not turn-of-the-century traditional, unless you're talking the Millennium, I'm guessing. This Yorkshire is not just a side pastry made from the drippings of the roast. It's the size of a small cake pan. The roast beef, carrots and peas and your choice of side fill this Giant Yorkshire pie. People love their Yorkshire pudding, so I'm guessing that's how this Giant Yorkshire came to be. You get plenty of it, and it's good. I do enjoy the old-fashioned side of Yorkshire Pudding, but if faced with only this option again, I'd order it.
After going here, I learned this is were a lot of the locals go when they wish to eat out.
If I ever find myself in Llandudno again, I definitely want to come back here and try their Vegan Chocolate and Vanilla Ice Cream Sundae. Their regular sundaes looked pretty good, and the people eating them seemed pretty happy. I bet the same can be said for the vegan versions.
Also the people who work here make the place an enjoyable place to just hang out. read more
