The Long Version: I love health food stores, so I had to check out Foodsmiths when we were in Perth. It's similar to Dandelion Foods in Almonte, and Natural Food Pantry or Kardish in Ottawa. Foodsmiths does seem to have more local items though and they have a formidable bakery section that the other stores I mentioned lack. They had tarts from Mrs. Garrett's Bake Shop (in Inverary, Ontario). As an aside, when I hear Mrs. Garrett, I will forever think of Charlotte Rae's character in "The Facts of Life." Lol. This clearly exposes me of being of a certain vintage ;) The regular prices of items that are easily found at other stores (e.g. Carbonaut, Made Good, Organic Meadow, etc.) are a tad higher than at the stores in Ottawa, but they have clearance sections and discounted items throughout the store. We were there at the end of January (2025) and I noticed a small Lunar New Year display with red lanterns, red parasols and a blue dragon. I was surprised to see that they sell sandals (!) They're all Birkenstock style sandals though, lol, the brands I saw were Finn Comfort, Haflinger, and Mephisto. I enjoyed poking around the store. Lots of free parking in their private parking lot. The Long Version: So everytime I'm visiting a city or town that's far from home (far being a relative term, but anywhere about 100km or more from my house, lol) I like to check out the grocery stores, even the large chains, because I find stores always have local items that I can't easily get at home. So while we were in Perth, ON, my husband humoured me and came with me to the Perth Metro. I was thrilled to see local-ish items like Artizen Kombucha (brewed in Perth) and Merrickville Bakery cookies (not in Perth but Merrickville is nearby and closer to Perth than it is to Ottawa, where I'm living). I also spotted an alcoholic version of Tahiti Treat, which I've never seen before. I loved Tahiti Treat as a kid! The store is fairly large. It was nearly organized and clean looking. I liked how the aisles are named after local streets or areas (in addition to having a number). We got a bottle of the pineapple coconut Artizen Kombucha ($3.99). Freshco to me seems to be a bit like a no-frills, maybe just a bit better. (Incidentally they are building a NF in my 'hood!) Overall, it's ok, but not my favourite.
