We got a clean, nicely decorated and furnished room with a good bathroom and decent running shower. Good enough for a short weekend stay and it was just fine for our purpose. Sure, it's not the Hilton or the Marriott but it's also much better than a motel. Covers the basic necessities, as well as offers iPad and laptop rentals, free wi-fi. Judging from other peoples' reviews, the experience varies in the room they stayed in and I was concerned after booking our room via Trip Advisor, but overall our stay was pleasant and satisfactory. Not knowing the town, at first I expected something more like a bed and breakfast but it's really just a lodging only. One caveat I may put is that the walls tend to be thin thin and some room layouts have the couches + dressers up against an adjoining wall (to our bed headboard) so if you have loud beighbors like we had (group of young ladies partying it up in their room till wee hours), you might get disturbance, but that could be managed if guests were more mindful of time and others, IMO. We have stayed at The Croff House twice and loved it both times. Our hosts Russ and Duncan made both stays special. The inn is beautiful, the rooms clean and cozy and breakfast outstanding. All in all we felt pampered and well taken care of. So we were really looking forward to staying at their new hotel The Barlow. We checked in then went right out to meet friends for dinner then drinks. When we returned the room was hot - about 85°F. We set the thermostat to cool at 70°F and went to bed. When we woke up the temperature was 83°F. We also noticed that there was no fan in the bathroom - just an open duct and a hose protruding downward from the ceiling. Both were unfinished and apparently we had been given a room where repairs were ongoing. Additionally there was drywall dust on the shower shelf and the lower part of the bathroom door. Finally there was a hole in the drywall under the sink and the places where drywall met the bathtub had not been finished properly. I showered for about 10 minutes then my wife showered. While she was washing her hair the hot water ran out. We decided to mention these things when we went out for the day. Given how immaculate and well run Croff House was we thought the owners would want to know. The young lady at the front desk said she could look into getting us another room (in a way that indicated that doing so would be an imposition) but we declined since everything had been unpacked already. She said she would notify housekeeping about the missed cleaning and told us how to adjust the thermostat to make the room cooler. She also said she would ask the owner about an adjustment to our room charge. Finally she questioned our ability to use the shower and to tell the difference between hot and cold water. When we returned that evening the drywall dust was gone. So far so good. The temperature was back up to 83 though so we opened a window (only one worked - the other was broken) to cool off. Unfortunately we had to close it before bedtime since we were on the first floor overlooking an alley. Another night sweating... At checkout when we were asked how we found our stay we mentioned all these issues. The same young woman from the day before was checking us out and had to be reminded we were not happy. I asked if there had been an adjustment and found there had not. She pointed out that the cleaning had been done and that she thought that had resolved things. When we complained about that she became defensive and argumentative. Finally I told her we expected better and certainly didn't expect her to argue with us. The lack of preparedness for these issues, the apparent defensiveness of Russ' replies to other negative reviews and the failure to get simple things right all spell huge problems for The Barlow. I'd love to see the guys fix this but I will not be back to find out what happens . NOTE: I find it sad yet amusing that Russ included a reply to go see reviews on TripAdvisor, as you'll find this story there as told by my wife. LOL read more

Don't stay here. Rooms are not as advertised and terrible customer service. Much nicer places in the area. Upon arriving in our room, we discovered that the individually controlled wall thermostat was not working and that a swamp cooler had been installed in the sitting area of the room. It took up most of the space in the couch area and made that area unusable. It was super loud and made it difficult to sleep. Most of all, this swamp cooler is not pictured or mentioned in the room description on the website. We did not know that the central cooling system in this room was not functioning when we booked the room. We were not told about it after booking. When we asked the front desk staff about it, they unapologetically told us the wall unit was broken but that the hotel was booked so they couldn't change our room. We then asked them to contact the manager and ask if we could have a discount since the room was not as advertised on the website. They never followed up with us regarding our inquiry. At checkout, I had to ask if they had any information and was tersely told that the manager said the unit couldn't be removed. We had never asked for the unit to be removed. To make matters even worse, after we returned home, I emailed the manager to request a discount myself and received an incredibly rude email reply. Yelp needs to introduce a Zero Star policy if only for the Barlow Hotel. The sidewalk entry awning, the front door signage and the lobby are very inviting and misleading, drawing you into the house of horrors. The staff is almost competent and they are accommodating. They are just innocent bystanders in this story. Once you pass the lobby things start to fall apart. The hallway carpet is ghastly, the woodwork looks like it has been renovated with a hatchet. The painters were unable to afford drop cloths and to clean up after themselves. The installation of the hallway electronics is unique. Once you get to the room it is very much like the entry, the initial impression is pleasant. But to get the full effect you need to spend some time in the room and look around. There is unfinished woodwork with gaping holes in the wall which has been partially blocked with scraps of wood; drywall is coming apart at the seams; bathroom sinks falling off the wall; drywall scored and painted to look sort of like the unfinished bath tile next to it; bathroom tile painted to look sort of like the wall next to it; tub doors installed over existing tub door tracks with enough mold growing under it to produce penicillin for a generation (which was specifically asked to be cleaned but never was). Those are some of the damaged, unfinished or just falling apart items, there are others that are just plain strange. The owners installed humongous shower controllers/sprayers/heads that take up a great portion of the bathtub if you have a room with a bathtub and almost the entire shower if you have a room with a shower. Do not take a shower while someone else uses the toilet, I was scalded in both rooms when the toilet was flushed while I was in the shower, like staying in cheap Italian pensione in the 70's. I'm also not quite sure if there were mattresses under the sheets we were sleeping on, the beds were so hard it felt like plywood or concrete. The ultimate insults start on our last night. I went to the bathroom around 12:00 am and sat down on the toilet but jumped up immediately because it was soaking wet. I turned on the light and noticed the bath mat in front of the toilet was also soaking wet and stained (light) brown. I looked up to the ceiling and noticed water dripping out of the vent that was above the toilet. I was repulsed. I rushed down to the lobby and found a sign on one of the desks with an emergency number on it and called it. The person at the other end assured me it was only "some condensation", as if it wasn't any big problem and I should just deal with it. I said that it wasn't condensation, it was feces that was dripping on me. He said that he would be right over. (I would like to explain that I am an architect and I own commercial property. I know what condensation is and I also know what dripping feces looks like.) When the owners arrived, one came up to the room, took a look at the dripping ceiling and the soaked toilet and towels on the floor and said that I guess I need to move you. He showed us the adjacent room that had a large portion of the ceiling above the bed recently cut away and not completely patched. My wife was afraid of the same incident occurring so refused the room. We were moved to another room upstairs. We had to pack all of our belongings (it was a lot since we were on a two week trip) and move it all to the next floor at 12:30 at night. The owner carried ONE of my wife's bags. The owner never apologized for the situation we were in the whole time he was there but the other owner did stand downstairs and whine the whole time about how late it was. But the true horror was not experienced until the next morning. The girl at the front called the room at 11:05 and inquired if I was aware of their check out policies. I said yes but I believed that we had some extenuating circumstances because of the occurrences the previous night and that we would be out in a few minutes. I went down shortly after that to get the bill while my wife finished packing. When I arrived she started to explain that they weren't going to charge me at the higher rate for the better room they moved me to but would just keep the bill the same. I asked, in shock, if she meant that she would be charging me anything for the previous night. She said "why, do you think you should get a discount?" I said of course I do. She said that she would discuss it with the owners and they would get back to me some time in the future, she seemed scared of dealing with the owners at that time. I said, no call them now. So she called, spoke to one and said they will call back in a few minutes. They called back a few minutes later and said that they would give me a $25.00 discount (off of an $800.00 bill). THAT WAS AN INSULT. The owners are incompetent and indifferent. Pictures enclosed. Not Ready For Prime Time My wife and I stayed at the Barlow for a wedding this past weekend. It's clear the property was rushed to open, as the shoddy workmanship was apparent in many ways. I could almost overlook the shower unit falling off the wall, the faulty bathroom door, the broken intercom, but the lack of central A/C during a brutal heat wave should have been cause for at least a discount. Oh, and the rear entrance was littered with garbage and grease. I wanted to take the opportunity to speak with management about the disappointing condition, but was unable to as no senior staff was present at our check out. I was told to email my concerns, which I did. My email was met with a request to recall the co-owner, Russ. Russ was fairly unsympathetic to my complaints because I failed to take the time during my friend's wedding weekend to deal with the issues of his sub-par property. Rather than attempt to build good will and offer me an adjustment, Russ hedged and offered me a discount for a future stay. I'm pretty sure Russ knew I wouldn't be back. I recommend lodgers seek other options until the many kinks are worked out. read more

I stayed at the Barlow Hotel last weekend. We were referred to this place from a friend who lived in the area and the website looked decent so we decided to book. Then we looked at reviews and wanted to cancel and called to speak to someone about it. It is very difficult to get the management on the phone as they only work Tuesday and Wednesday... I've never heard of that before. there is a 14 day cancellation policy so we couldn't get out without losing the deposit. We decided to hope for the best and just make it work. We did, but the place is nothing special. Pro-great location, has a decent gym Con- paper thin walls, run down, no breakfast or bar (not sure who reviewed this place and said they had a drink at the bar..., they are not there through the night so if you need anyone you have to hope you can contact some off the premises. It's simply very very bare bones. Bring your own snacks and water, nothing is in the room except Keurig coffee. I would suggest somewhere else for this price. You can do better. I've been driving since Austin, TX on my way to Maine and decided today to skip NYC in favor if something more relaxing in the Catskills. I have a small dog with me so i had to call many hotels on the way before I was referred to the Barlow. I called their number and a machine told me to get online and then it hung up. You can't talk to a real person to rent a room in a small town bnb ?!? So I pulled over and got on their website where it does say "pets permitted" and made a reservation. My receipt specifically says pets permitted. 3 hours later I get there and the front desk attendant says only one room is pet friendly and it's occupied. She didnt try to work with me at all, just rudely said theyd refund my money. COULD'VE SAVED ME SIX HOURS BY PICKING UP THE PHONE. So now I'm driving back to New York in the middle of the gd night. This hotel has a very strict cancellation policy. I reserved 2 rooms, 7 months in advance. Plans changed and I needed to cancel 1 week later. I was charged $25 PER ROOM as a cancellation fee. It's a very busy time of the year and I know these rooms would sell out. It is also extremely hard to get a hold of anyone at the front desk. They DO NOT answer the phones and respond to emails very slowly. Steer clear unless you are desparate. read more

I stayed at the Barlow in August and was given incorrect info about where to park my car resulting in a parking ticket. Even before I knew I had received it the clerk told me to bring it in and the hotel would pay it, which I did. Long story short - the ticket has not been paid and the fine has increased from $15 to $55 due to delinquent fees. Despite repeated emails and phone calls to the manager I have not been able to get this issue resolved. I have even offered to pay the ticket and have the hotel refund my credit card. This issue has been going on nearly two months with no resolution in sight. I would NEVER stay at this hotel again, nor would I recommend it to anyone. Their customer service is abysmal!! read more

We were hopeful when we checked in - centrally located in town, the lobby was nice and the staff welcoming. Then we made our way to the room. The stairs and hallways feel like a boarding house. Our room was small which is ok, but everything was run down. And you can hear conversations in the rooms next to you. My husband had a terrible night sleep because the fragrance of the detergent used on the bedding was very strong. The front desk was empathetic but said there wasn't anything they could do about it - that it was in the actual dryer. That didn't make sense but I wasn't going to argue. We decided to move to another hotel for our final night in town. We left a message asking for the Manager to call us and that we were wondering if we could pay for the one night we stayed and 1/2 price for the night we were canceling. We never heard from the Manager, and of course we were charged. *UDPATE* One of the Owners or Managers responded to this same review on Trip Advisor. Normally I would be impressed with a response, but his was snide and only written to make him and his hotel look better. In fact, he said we left abruptly before they could make it right which is incorrect. We had spoken to the woman at the front desk in the morning and that afternoon we came back to find they 'rinsed' our bedding to see if that helped. Unfortunately it didn't so we decided to check out. Nothing abrupt about it. And he also claimed to have called us to offer a credit. We never received a call ... and why would we want a credit if we were leaving because we were so unhappy with the accommodations!!! It used to be that The Barlow was one of the only places to stay in town. Not the case anymore - there are absolutely fantastic places to stay that are walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants. We ended up at the Inn at Hudson and loved it! Very disappointing. Don't stay here unless you don't mind wasting your money. This hotel supposedly opened early 2013 but looks as if its been running for years. The carpets are stained in the hallways and elevator and the paint jobs must have been done by one who can't follow straight lines! We thought the 'fireplace in each room' was a nice touch until we learned the thermostat can only go up in temperature and not down! Shower was nice but did not function properly... shame. What a great addition to Hudson! You feel the charachter of the building when you walk under the awning....then once in the front door you get a modern feel...with alot of hometown welcoming!! The room was beautifully appointed with every comfort you could possibly need or want. The beds are beyond comfortable and are great to climb into after a dinner out or just after a shower that most people would LOVE to have in their home! I've stayed in many hotels across the state for various vacations etc....and I can honestly say I would go back to The Barlow even if it were just for a weekend of relaxation and a good feeling! read more

We've stayed in hotels all over the US. Especially in the northeastern region. Dear lord, this has to be the very worst, in terms of customer service. Impossible to to reach a human being, which is in this day and age, is laughable. The rates per room for this area are overinflated. Who cares? PLEASE READ. My fiance and I were attending a wedding in October in Ghent, NY and needed a place to stay overnight. We did not want to stay at any of the local motels. My fiance chose the Barlow with hesitance because of some of the bad reviews on Yelp, so we lowered our expectations. When we arrived the hotel was fantastic from the beginning. We checked in and went to our room which was very clean, modern, with a sitting area and fireplace. The bathroom was outstanding and we did not see ANY of the things some of the other reviewers saw.. It was clean, well designed with a soaking tub and shower, and no leaks or shotty work to be found. My fiance is a carpenter and did notice that the hallways were a bit old and needed work, but it's a hallway of a boutique hotel that was obviously an old home at one point. How much time do you spend in the hall?! The lobby is lovely and the rooms are wonderful, we definitely plan on going back. We asked for a place to grab a bottle of wine and the best place for breakfast and the man at the front (sorry I did not catch your name) was so helpful and polite. I think some of the "bad reviews" may be taken out of context. The hotel may have been under renovation at the time, I am not sure. But we had a wonderful time in the Queen Suite. I gave the hotel four stars only because the walls are a bit thin, but again. It's a boutique hotel and I was not expecting excellent acoustics. Hudson is a lovely very artsy town. read more

This wasn't the best hotel I've stayed at but not the worst. We stayed this weekend when it was in the negatives outside but inside our room, there was a huge draft and our room could not stay warm. It took a long time to heat up even with the fireplace. It finally warmed up after over 24 hours. We also spoke with the front desk asking about where to go to dinner and they didn't seem very knowledgable about the area. I asked them about 2 restaurants I read about on Yelp that's in the town and they haven't heard anything about them. I will give them the shower, it was awesome! Again not the worst place I've stayed but there's room for improvement for sure. It's an okay place to stay if you're not into B&Bs. Probably the best hotel choice in Hudson. read more

I stayed in one of the suites, the most expensive rooms, for a weekend in early June. It was actually the weekend of a wedding referenced in a review below. Let's start with the positives. Hudson is a lovely town. Now the negatives. My "suite" was a single room with a pull out couch crammed into the corner that was so cramped when opened that you had to crawl all over one another to move around the room. But I guess that's all part of the "charm." And speaking of charm, I was witness to the interchange referenced below. I travel more than most and spend an average of two nights a week in hotels. I can honestly say that I have NEVER witnessed such a rude response to a guest as the offer to give her some earplugs to offset the room's noisy AC. I found my interactions there to be most unfriendly. The overview when I checked in was mechanical and rote. I needed to use a printer, and it was as though I had three heads. But the interchange over the AC really took the cake. And I submit that the supposed comments from friends of the bride is some major made-uppery. The reviews of this place are telling. Advice from this seasoned traveller: Go to Hudson! It's magical! But avoid the Barlow! It's dreadful! read more

The Barlow is as good as it gets! A perfect stay in Hudson, NY. What once must have been an office / housing building has been transformed artistically (and very comfortably) into a boutique hotel. The owners have thought of everything. The amenities, the linens, the comfortable beds, the furnishings throughout - all were perfect choices for this seasoned traveler. The friendly service at check-in to the continued request to assist in any way (dinner reservations, shopping suggestions, etc.) made me feel like a star. We were all set this week to go to a family wedding in Hudson, NY, when my husband received the bad news that he has cancer and would have to have surgery instead of joining the family in NY. As soon as the surgery was scheduled (almost 2 weeks before our planned arrival in Hudson), we called the Barlow Hotel, where we had made reservations to stay months before, to cancel our reservation. Our internet was down that day (a bad day all around), so when I was told that I "could not cancel by phone; only by email," I told them I could not but needed to cancel. I was told that the reservation was cancelled. The Barlow then called a day after my husband's surgery to "confirm" our reservation. I told them the whole story and that I had already cancelled. They refused to accept this phone cancellation, and will not return our $305 deposit. Not only is this policy unfair and unconscionable, but it is also discriminatory again all persons without access to email. Customer service is one thing, discriminatory practices are quite another. I had a wonderful stay here. The front desk assistant was kind and helpful. I had a lot of leg pain, and she took all of my luggage and placed it carefully into my room (she would not let me lift a thing!). In addition, the room was clean, warm, cozy, newly redone. A Kurig coffee bar, electric fireplace, very comfortable bed with uber comfortable pillows. The location is within proximity to everything you'd want to see in Hudson - antique stores, restaurants, coffee shops, churches, and a lovely park along the Hudson River. read more

Choices are few in Hudson My family stayed in four different places as we came to town for a wedding. My sister felt this would be the best choice and perhaps it is. A walk or short drive takes you everywhere. It's reviews were better than some places. There are shortcomings. What you get for your money is a small room with a Keurig coffee maker and the usual amenities. It really is possible to hear conversation or crying babies through the wall and footsteps above are also audible. There is a second floor ice machine. There are an exercise room and meeting room in the basement. There is no breakfast and no place to buy anything closer than the nearby convenience store. Maid service is sketchy and does not necessarily include vacuuming since the same scrap of paper stayed around. The room was pretty beaten up: paint needed, what looked like mold in the corner of bathroom, wood door needed staining, in other words unattractive looking. Hotel staff is on site from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. We didn't need help so don't know how quick a response on the emergency number might be. I don't expect to return to Hudson. If I were to do so, I would carefully consider other options. read more
