I recently took a virtual Manners 1 class with Kizz and Jess, and cannot recommend it highly…read moreenough. The class was small, so each pup got plenty of personal attention, and the class aspect meant that we could all learn from each other as well. Each class is recorded so you can reference them later, and their post-class emails also give you homework for the week and great resources to use if you want to learn more about topics discussed. I really like that the instructors have done tons of research on dog behavior and training and cite their sources--it's both fascinating (from an intellectual standpoint) and comforting (from a nervous dog mom standpoint) to hear the research and science behind their methods. They teach a positive reinforcement only method, which I really appreciate after previous experiences with other trainers who advocate things like prong collars. The emphasis is on building a relationship with your dog through understanding the way their brains work and how best to communicate with them. I look forward to taking our next class with PumpkinPups--they are an incredible source of info for all things dog and we are lucky to have them in Brooklyn!

A few people had recommended Shelby Semel so we decided to give it a try and were SO incredibly lucky enough to be matched with Genevieve. I have never worked with a trainer so knowledgable about dog behavior. While other trainers in the past were rigid and just used the same, standard techniques that don't work for highly reactive and anxious dogs, Gen took the time to get to know and understand our dog and provided insight into his behavior. What I appreciated most is that she was always realistic with us and our training sessions/goals never felt idealistic or unattainable. Rather, we truly focused on little steps and management which also completely shifted our own perspective on how we should be engaging with our dog going forward. Gen worked with us through a huge move, the birth of our first child, and the introduction of our nanny and we credit all of our success to her. Even outside of sessions she checks in with texts to see how things are going and genuinely cares about the progress of your dog. If you want someone who will actually take the time to understand your individual circumstances/pet and will truly work with you on creating the right plan with realistic and actionable goals, I can't recommend Gen enough.

Before starting our sessions, I was struggling with an over-excited Golden Retriever puppy. I had reached a point where I was losing hope, but Warren completely helped me regain my patience. His calm, expert approach changed the dynamic almost immediately. What sets this training apart is how manageable it is. Warren's training methods are intuitive, and his super detailed recap emails were a total game-changer. They made it incredibly easy to practice on my own between sessions, ensuring that we never lost momentum. Training didn't feel like a chore, and because Warren's methods actually work, it was super rewarding. Ultimately, I feel like I have a totally new dog and an infinitely stronger bond with her. I cannot thank Warren enough for his help. If you want a trainer who truly cares and delivers real results, Warren is your guy!

5-stars for Inna and the Wag The Dog training program!…read more My wife and I found Inna (via Yelp) shortly after taking our miniature poodle home with us at 11 weeks old. Being our first dog, we did not know what to expect. Inna visited us for 4x1hr sessions over the course of about 8 weeks and we could not have been happier with the results. In short - the puppy is trained, but it is really the "masters" that learn all the tricks. Inna was patient with us as we learned the benefits of positive reinforcement. Bebop the Poodle has become most excellent with the basic commands - come, sit, stay, touch, watch - and we, as owners, feel confident that we can continue teaching more desirable actions on our own now that *we* have been trained. Inna is very accommodating and provided a quality service in-person, but is also available for help via phone or email when we've had questions. She clearly loves dogs and is a much-welcomed visitor for little Bebop. We heartily endorse Wag the Dog for personal 1-on-1 training, and imagine that group sessions are equally effective.

My friend had to travel at short notice to visit ailing relatives and needed boarding for his…read more8-week-old male Australian Shepherd puppy. I was traveling with him, and our departure the next day depended entirely on making suitable arrangements for the dog. We needed care for 10 days, and with so little time to research options, we went with a recommendation from my trusted vet: Instinct Dog Behavior & Training. We reached out to person who identified herself as one of the co-owners, who offered to personally care for the puppy. Because he was too young to stay at the main facility, the plan was for her to keep him at her personal residence. We dropped him off at the East Harlem business location and headed home. My friend is very attached to his dog, and he even got an Uber back the same day just to bring the puppy's blanket. He left feeling reassured that the dog was in good hands. That night, my friend was already missing his puppy and asked for an update before bed, and she sent over some photos, which he shared in our group chat. At first glance they looked great. Almost too great. Anyone who has spent five minutes with an 8-week-old Aussie knows they never stand still, so my first thought was that she must be a remarkable trainer to get a puppy posed so perfectly. But looking closer, I noticed irregularities in the images, and they appeared to be AI generated. These were later confirmed to be AI generated. I want to be fair here. I don't believe there was any bad intent, and the puppy was returned to us in perfectly good condition. But sending what seemed to be AI-generated photos instead of a quick real snapshot was a lapse in judgment that undermined our trust at the worst possible moment. When you've handed over a very young puppy on short notice, an honest update matters more than a polished one. Given the circumstances, we felt more comfortable collecting the dog, and a refund was promptly issued, which we appreciated. With departure set for the following morning, there was no time to find replacement boarding, and the trip had to be cancelled entirely. Between the non-refundable bookings and rearranged plans, it turned into an expensive problem. Others clearly have good experiences here, and the co-owner was pleasant throughout. This just wasn't the right fit for us, and I'd encourage them to stick with real photos for owner updates, even imperfect ones. Honest beats perfect every time.

And for 3 weeks straight I only had 2 hrs of sleep per night, in addition to the puppy's extreme anxiety and constant need for my engagement. He also kept making himself sick and eating his poop as a really unusual stress response. I heard good things about Malia and I needed someone who would feel safe coming to my home during the pandemic. Enter tough-as-nails-take-no-shit Malia. After our first consultation, she had sleeping tips that literally changed my (daily) life. I have been sleeping 6-8 hrs a night ever since our first visit and it's been almost a month by now... In our second visit, she helped my dog play on a leash, something I spent 3 weeks practicing with absolutely NO success. Ever since our second session, he has been happy with his leash and well behaved. This review really sounds too good to be true and I wouldn't believe it either if I read it. But I shit you not, this is not some snake oil salesman scheme to get you to spend money on a dog therapist (hell, you probably don't even spend money on your own therapist, am I right??) Fast forward several sessions and now he plays outside, stopped eating his poops, doesn't even try to eat other poops on the sidewalk, climbs the stairs, and even puts himself to bed for nap time. What a good boy! While he isn't perfect, and he requires A LOT of human effort, he's doing much better than anyone ever expected from a little guy born with so many major issues/disabilities.
