    It's hard being a single doggy mom. Especially when you work long hours and the former doggy daddy…read moreisn't in the picture anymore and doesn't even acknowledge the existence of his once beloved pup. So, rather than shacking up with the next available dude who might make a decent dad to my 65 pound pit bull, I opted to explore the dog walker option. So much cheaper. And the interview process is not nearly as tedious. I was referred to Mindy by my neighbors who have two very dog-aggressive pups. And while Gus is not dog aggressive, per se, he doesn't like every dog he meets, so it takes a diligent and knowledgeable walker to ensure his and everyone else's safety. Mindy seemed to be right up our alley. Mindy stopped by the house and met Gus. He loved her. Immediately. Kisses and jumping and that lean in dogs do when they are feeling particularly affectionate. She asked all the right questions and, when I had questions, she had all the right answers. She leaves little notes telling me about their walk and whether his business was appropriately done. Unfortunately Gus can be a total pain in the ass and his report card will sometimes read "Gus was a little stubborn today." Which means he probably refused to walk and threw a temper tantrum with his leash. Mindy puts up with a lot of bullshit. But she never complains and I love knowing he's in such good hands. And I feel a lot less guilty when I have to stay at work late knowing that Gus has had an awesome walk that afternoon. My beloved neighbor Jaime, a retired Puerto Rican Vietnam vet who spends most of his summer afternoons sitting on his porch, keeping an eye on the neighborhood, told me this: "That dog walker lady you got is a good one. Make sure you keep her around." And I always listen to Jaime's advice.

I like that they focus on JP so that their clients are closer together. My pup can always use more time socializing, so I appreciate that a walk with a friend or two happens when possible. Or if not, she goes by herself, and that's fine too (at no additional charge). The price for a 30-min. walk has only gone up one dollar in three years; it's currently $16, which is cheaper than anywhere else for that amount of time. They accept PayPal for payment, which is super convenient since who has checks anymore? Finances aside, what I really appreciate about them is their flexibility. Sometimes, our walking days would change each week, and all they asked is that we email on Sunday night to say which days we needed walks. Or we'd go several months without needing walks at all. All of that was fine with them, and they couldn't have been more accommodating. Oh, and my dog completely adores Mindy! I just moved out of the neighborhood and am on the hunt for a new dog walker... it is not easy to find a good one that's reasonably priced. I really miss Mailman's Pet Service!

    I recently moved to Maine and contacted Kara's Petcare on the recommendation of my vet. I was so…read moreexcited because it seemed like they would be able to offer daycare for my dogs and some auxiliary training if needed. They also said they did transport to the daycare facility and boarding on occasion. It seemed perfect. I should mention that there are Kara's pet care facilities in Portsmouth, Berwick, and Falmouth. First I was asked to set up a meet and greet with one of their associates at my home so she could meet my pets. It took me many tries to get through many unreturned phone calls, but finally we did set up the meet and greet and that went well. Then I was asked to set up an app and an account before we could actually schedule any dog care. So I set up the app and the account. Then I was asked to drive my dogs to their facility to see if the dogs would "be happy there." So I drove my dogs 25 minutes to the facility. When I got to the facility I was told that they were supposed to stay there for a day assessment and then I should come and pick them up. This was not communicated to me earlier, and I had not budgeted an extra hour of driving back-and-forth. Then they would reschedule the assessment and they would come and pick up my dogs for the day-long assessment. All before any dog care could be scheduled. So, still not on the calendar. So to summarize: you need to go through a long process of scheduling a meet and greet, then you need to have the meet and greet, then you need to sign up for the app, then your dogs have to be assessed to see if they will be happy. I'm just thinking that anyone who's busy enough to need dog care is too busy for this multilayered, multi-step, poorly communicated process where phone calls, texts, and emails are returned only about half the time.

    I took my dog to get groomed and the one star is not for the groomer. She did an excellent job…read more(Arris) and was very pleasant. The issue was a very rude young cashier who goes by the name of Phoebe. She (?) went out of her (?) way to make checking out as unpleasant and distressing as possible. The thing is, I'm not phased by people with attitudes such as hers. It's just a shame that this employee wants to do as little as humanly possible obviously. Standing in line waiting to pay my dog did a small piddle off to the side of the line. I always carry a poop bag but I was unsure what to do about the pee. Phoebe made sure to enlighten me by yelling out to me that there were paper towels behind me. So I took the paper towels and made sure every spot was covered. When it was my turn to pay she informed me that I needed to pick up the pee-covered paper towels as well. (I am an elderly person who was attempting to just pay while I had a dog on a leash. Not to mention I have a bad back.) I told Phoebe as I was putting my card in to pay that I would go pick it up. She then told me "I'd rather you pick it up first before you pay." I said "Why, I'm going to do it." She said "I don't think you will." WTH. I said "So you're not only attempting to humiliate me but you're calling me a liar as well." She just smirked and said "Go ahead and write me a bad review." Wish granted. An honest review is more like it. There just happened to be a neighbor of mine that was also in the line a couple people back and she was nice enough to pick up the paper towels for me even though I was going to do it after I paid, but luckily there are kind people in the world who still respect and are willing to help out those of us who are not so spry anymore! The thing is, I'm a very considerate dog-owner. I always carry bags and always pick up after my dog. In fact, in a previous visit, a worker had expressed gratitude and told me that most people don't do that anymore. But Phoebe decided she was just going to make a huge scene for no good reason. I wish her well in her future job endeavors.
