We all chose from the pre fixed menu and everything was excellent. I had the sea bass for my main and loved it. The wait staff were very attentive and helpful and there was never a feeling of being rushed even in a busy restaurant. The space it's self is beautiful and so are the ladies room, a testing point for me personally, dirty bathroom, questionable kitchen. Can't wait to return!

Unfortunately, the mascarpone was served frozen! It had been pre-prepared and frozen, and had not been thawed prior to serving. Surely, the mascarpone should be freshly prepared, like all other decent restaurants do it. So if you want to pay expensive city centre prices for frozen microwave meals, this is the place for you. We also had a bottle of Chardonnay (allegedly it was Chardonnay). It was the worst bottle of wine I have ever had in a restaurant. It was very acidic and we didn't finish the bottle. Anyway, the manger was impolite and extremely challenging, reducing the bill by a total of £2 after a long conversation. No wonder the restaurant was less than 10% full. It won't be long before this restaurant changes ownership (again).

This place is so easy to overlook that despite knowing it existing even I walked right past it (it was a weekday night in the off-season so everyone was upstairs), but there's a decent sign for the narrow spot in the Shambles. This place truly feels like a tiny restaurant you might stumble upon in a small town in Italy. The wait staff is so friendly that you feel as if you're in their home and speak to you just as frankly. I was impressed to hear the waiter recommend the house wine to someone at a nearby table asking over anything on their wine list because of how uncommon primitivos are there and that it's a hardy wine. I had a glass of it and thoroughly enjoyed it. All the food was excellent (as authentic as I've tasted in a while) and very reasonably priced (though we only had starters and pasta) - even the free bread was surprisingly good and very useful in sopping up sauces later in the meal. Keeping in mind that it's a small place and you may be in for a wait if you don't book ahead, I can't imagine it disappointing someone looking for a real Italian experience in York.

This has to be one of the best Italian restaurants I have visited outside of Italy. Gianni who runs the place is very friendly and remembered me after my first visit, when I went in again 3 months or so later. It is VERY small so booking is essential I would say (and even then you may have to wait a little when you arrive) but it is perfectly formed, very cosy, warm & with an authentic trattoria feel. The steaks are great as are the house specials but do not go here looking for pizza, the kitchen is too small to make them apparently. The desserts too are out of this world, Toscanella being my fave - which is like a profiterole pie - mm mmm mmmmm!

On our first day in York, we embarked on the original walking ghost tour, which led us through the city's winding streets and ended near a small, unassuming Italian restaurant--Caesar's. It had that quiet charm--quaint, understated, inviting. It reminded me of the little trattorias in Positano and Sorrento, where simplicity is a sign of confidence rather than compromise. That fleeting moment stuck with me. I asked my kids on our final night in York what they wanted for dinner, the unanimous answer was Italian. I turned to Yelp, browsed through options, but nothing felt quite right. Then I remembered Caesar's. I searched for reviews--only old ones, nothing recent. Was it a hidden gem, or had it lost its spark? I wasn't convinced either way, but something told me it was worth a shot. We took a walk through the city, considering different Italian spots along the way. One looked too formal, another had an unkempt exterior, yet another had a menu that felt uninspired. As we neared York Minster, the bells began to ring--a soaring melody that followed us down the street. A sign, perhaps? We arrived. The menu was simple--pastas, pizzas, antipasto, fresh bread, classic desserts. No pretense, just honest Italian fare. I decided to trust my instinct: At the very least, I'll give it a recent review. Inside, the décor was humble--Italian posters, Italian music playing softly in the background. We were seated right by the window. Our order: Pepperoni pizza Margherita pizza with prosciutto Pasta Bolognese Caesar salad Fresh bread basket Lasagna The food took a little time to arrive, but for good reason. When it did, everything was piping hot, fresh, and generous in portion. The bread looked homemade. The salad had chunks of cheese--possibly Pecorino Romano. The pizzas were huge--easily shareable. We could have gotten by with just one. My son, clearly delighted, licked his pasta bowl clean and used the remaining sauce to make a makeshift sandwich with the bread. Then came my lasagna. It arrived bubbling in a baking dish, too hot to dive into immediately. I waited, watching my family enjoy their meals--like any good mamma would. The first bite transported me--back to Positano, 16 years ago, hungry and pregnant, savoring a plate of pasta arrabbiata with a side of mussels. I remember tossing the mussels into the pasta, creating my own dish, and nearly crying at how perfect it was. That feeling--the comfort, the fullness, the warmth--came rushing back with every bite of Caesar's lasagna. This is home-style Italian. It's the kind of meal that fills not just your stomach but your spirit. The kind where you can taste the love in every dish. So if you're searching for a meal that feels like home--where the food is made with care, where simplicity is celebrated, where you leave not just satisfied but happy--then Caesar's is your place. It's as if Nonna herself was in the kitchen, cooking for you. Grazie, Caesar's, per la meravigliosa cena! - Famiglia Paoluccio
