It occupies a corner position along Whitchurch Road and shouts loudly about its cheap alcohol. You go in expecting White Lightning and Special Brew, yet once you're inside, it's not only fairly cheap and pretty cheerful, but they actually sell some decent Belgian and German bottled beers - plus Welsh and English brands as well. It's not what I was expecting at all, and not quite as cheap as you might think it's going to be from the outside, but since it also has higher quality goods than you'd expect that's fair enough. Apart from the copious amounts of alcohol, it has all the usual corner shop-style food stuff such as bread, milk, biscuits, chocolate, and so on - so you can stock up on those, too, to soak up some of your Belgian beers.

I'm struggling to type, it's that awe-inspiring slash terrifying. But there's one thing on sale here that you have to make an excursion for. Located, quite sensibly, close to the till, just to the right, on the second shelf you'll find it. An inauspicious place for such a herculean beverage. I am talking about Buckfast Tonic Wine. A hellish potion concocted by Devonshire monks, it is the drink that is destroying Scotland. Not Surrey or Kent but Scotland. It's getting so bad the Scottish Parliament are thinking about banning it (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/7768563/MSPs-to-vote-on-Buckfast-ban-in-Scotland.html) That's how crazy 'Ol Buckie (as it is known by legions of toothless teenage jocks) is. And Discount Supermarket is only the only place in Cardiff that I definitely know always stocks it. If you've never had it, it's like a drinking a bottle of port and twenty cans of Red Bull. Try it for £6.99 a bottle. The also stock milk and bread and so forth, but you only come here for the Buckie.

But with a name like Bargain Booze, if they didn't stock a few bobby dazzlers in the beer aisle it would be the most blatant form of false advertising since the Neverending Story reached its conclusion. While they do boast some great deals on alcohol, it isn't so much the price that is the attraction of this shop; what's far more appealing is the variety on offer. For a store of this size, the diversity on display is unparalleled. From Chinese Tsingtao lager to accompany your takeaway to Bulmers light cider for those keeping a sly eye on their calorie intake, Bargain Booze is the ace in the hole when it comes to stocking up on specific and unusual beverages. If you're having a get together, a barbeque or just fancy a few cold ones while the footy's on, Bargain Booze will supply you with whatever you're looking for, no matter how specific your taste buds are.

I don't really have anything negative to say about Del'z, it's good service, there is a good selection, it's clean and well presented, but it's just a bit too expensive (or maybe i'm a bit too tight!) For convienience it's open 7 days a week, so for those Sunday lunches when you are missing that vital wine, or cider for the gravy you know there is always somewhere to head.

With this place being just down the road from me, I go here all the time. The staff (always the…read moresame guys, 24/7, 365 days a year!) are really friendly and always say 'hello' whenever me or my girlfriend walk in. Admittedly, they suspiciously watched if we were going to steal anything the first couple of times that we came in (I don't blame them in this area), but now they've relaxed and realised we're good, straight down the middle, honest folk. They sell the usual run of newspapers, cigarettes, sandwiches, booze and other household essentials. What surprised me the most, though, was that they stock free-range eggs from nearby farms and some of the most delicious locally-sourced bread that's great for toasting. Buy here instead of going to bloody Tesco's round the corner if you can help it!

The shop keepers here are pretty shifty, but they have every reason to be in this area. You'll find the usual news and booze in Star Food and Wine, in addition to a selection of essential household and food items. The latter are stocked in a casually haphazard fashion around the store.
