What a nice antique store. And big with an upstairs and a back building! One thing I was looking…read morefor was sheet music for Bookguy and they had some, but it was inaccessible at the time I was there. I saw lots of beautiful, nicely priced furniture, costume jewelry cases, vintage clothing, soaps, chalk paint, and vintage household goods such as dishes and bakeware. We only spent an hour looking around but could easily have taken a couple of hours or more. Since anything I bought would have to be packed in a suitcase or carry on, I decided there wasn't anything I couldn't live without at that time. If you're ever in Chico CA, this is a great stop for looking at antiques.

Like most antique stores there were some absolute steals while others are really expensive but overall we felt the deals were fair. Found this toy car that I had from my childhood until 2017 when we lost our home in the Northern California wildfires. Brought back so many memories, had to grab it.

The staff told us that the vintage items have a different label than the newer ones, I think the vintage items have the price tag with a chicken picture on one side. I can't remember for sure. I really liked how they categorized the vintage items, they were all grouped by theme, for example one was farm themed, one was glassware, one was florals, etc. There were some items made by local people which I loved. Great shop where you can definitely find something for everyone.

I'm partial to their jewelry selection, which will be the focus of my review. The staff is very knowledgeable about their stuff- both the product details of their goods, as well as the technical gemological information and its history. They're very welcoming about people dropping by to gawk at their beauties (a docent-led tour of their pretties, anyone?) as well as customers who are looking to purchase pretties for themselves or for others. The staff is patient about answering questions as well as generously providing technical information and history that they think will be of interest to their customers. They won't pressure you to buy. During my last visit, it so happened to be that they had a stunning aquamarine ring that I just had to get.. oops. (But not oops because even after a few days, I have zero buyer's remorse!) They have a flexible layaway plan for folks who may be tight on the budget. For jewelries that are of high value (likely $1000+) they provide appraisal. To resize a ring, they ask for a week's time and they charge exactly what their jeweler would charge them for resizing. Talk about a friendly and trustworthy store! I'd highly recommend folks swinging by downtown Chico to pay a visit to Country Squyres, whether it's for funsies or for a unique engagement ring shopping. p.s. Ask them about their antique carved rings! They are of interesting technical and historical jewelry specimens :)

Sadly, I feel the need to lower my rating due to a particularly disappointing experience. I purchased an item for my son for Christmas that he thought was authentically old and historical. We went half on it as it was spendy. Immediately after purchase I brought it out to him in the car (he was staying with our dog) and had him look at it (we had seen it the day before in the case in the store) and now in the sunlight, he realized that it didn't hold any historical value as it was a modern replica. We are learning here. Not even two minutes later, I went back in to explain our disappointment and asked to return it. I had paid cash so it would have been easy. I was met with some pretty cold vibes and told in a cold and final tone that there was nothing that could be done. That was it. No exploring options, no conversation and no sense of human connection. There were 2 other employees watching this unfold and nobody said anything and it was really a weird vibe forming. I was so uncomfortable. I went on to explain that my son had used part of his own money and this was for Christmas. He worked hard for 2 months to earn this and had a special place waiting in his historical collection for it. This was one of his main gifts and a financial sacrifice for us this year so this was especially difficult to hear. I could understand if this was a genuine antique and I'd taken the object home for 24 hours and then come back but it wasn't, and I literally just paid for it. I felt truly crushed upon leaving this store. I'm not sure how much of the bad taste was left behind by the policy itself or by the cold and angry seeming demeanor of the shopkeeper. I didn't feel addressed as an important customer, more like a repugnant annoyance to be gotten rid of. I left feeling like I'd done something terribly 'wrong'. We want to keep coming back but that was one of the worst experiences in a small town that we love and had hoped to keep supporting.
