I originally had an appointment to meet with financial aid and take a tour of the school because I…read moream thinking about taking classes. First off, this is the second time they cancelled due to an emergency, with no rescheduled date. But when I arrived ( I also had services booked for that day) the financial aid lady was there, and looks like there were tours happening. Weird. The student who did my nails and the nail instructor were adamant that I would have to stay on financial aids ass in order to get enrolled in classes. I will not be chasing anyone to enroll, I will just take my business elsewhere. So on to my services, I want to start by saying that I completely understand that these are students who are learning and mastering their craft. HOWEVER, if the student is a senior and they are doing subpar (and that's being nice) work at best, they should not be taking on clients. The instructor was no where to be found until it was time to sign off of the students paperwork. The instructor didn't even take the time to look over to students work. The student was nice enough, but I'm not sure being a nail tech is her passion. There is no way that could be proud of the work she did on my nails. The before picture was embarrassing and I couldn't bring myself to post. The pic is after I came home and tried to file and fix my nails a bit. YIKKKKEEES!!

My three star review is based…read moreoff of some things that happened that really have nothing to do with how my hair ultimately turned out. The hair first: so I got a cut and color. I am very nervous and picky when it comes to my hair color especially. I've had some bad experiences and don't like to have further bad experiences! Admittedly, I wanted my dark blonde hair lifted to a pale neutral blonde (very light, but not white - still blonde). This sounds easy because my natural color is already fairly light, but blonde is complicated. I also wanted a short pixie cut, which ALSO isn't the easiest thing to do. Taylor did my hair along with the help of an instructor, and I think she made a really good effort. It took an extremely long time, and that's something you need to be aware of before going to this place. These are students who are learning through doing, so it takes them longer. That was fine with me, but I was a bit bothered by the multiple lectures I got that basically amounted to a bunch of excuses as to why they couldn't get the look I was describing. This even happened when I mentioned and showed pictures of this look having been done successfully on previous occasions at my old salon. I've had short pale blonde hair (when I didn't let it grow out to my natural) for about 16 years now. This exact color has been successfully done on my head hundreds of times. Now...even if it's true that hair color can turn out differently or not take properly from one time to the next....first of all, that isn't my experience, and secondly, I don't think they should be blaming the color not working out on the customer's hair. They're the stylists and control the color application. I'm ultimately pretty happy with my hairstyle. I may update if need be after I wash my hair and style on my own, but as of immediately after the appointment, even though I'm exhausted I gotta say it looks pretty epic. So I'm pleased with that. Some additional things I want to mention though that contributed to my three star review: 1. Again, it took an extremely long time. Two visits. Probably around 8 hours in total. This actually isn't why I'm only rating three stars, because I expected the longer time, but I have to say both times left me utterly exhausted, I think because I had to go without eating for a very long time. This may not be an issue for everyone, but I have some medical conditions and this was very taxing for me. 2. Speaking of medical things, I also got injured while there. The student next to Taylor dropped her iPad pretty forcefully on my shoulder because she got excited over her mom calling. It WAS an accident, but it hurt so bad I struggled against crying for nearly half an hour. The pain is still really bad and between that and the exhaustion I am feeling from the length of time this took, I've been fighting nausea and more tears tonight. I also have a pretty nasty bruise forming. My pain tolerance is NOT low - I have Ehlers-Danlos and have dislocated my shoulder with less pain than this, but I think because the iPad landed right onto the bulk of the muscle at the top of my shoulder this bruised really deeply. I tried to take it in stride because I don't think she realized how badly she hurt me, but then this same person tossed out my coffee (which was on Taylor's station, not hers!). I'm pretty sure that was when I showed some real irritation, because I was in pain AND had no coffee. When I said something about it she gave me $5 for the coffee, but the entire thing left me feeling really off balance. Plus, I'm just hoping my shoulder is ok. Overall, I would recommend this place. There are things to work on there, but the people are very friendly and the atmosphere is upbeat. I will be going back, and probably next time just take more snacks with me. And hopefully not get hurt again!

This was my first experience with the Paul Mitchell school. Not my first time going to a beauty…read moreschool for services as I frequently went to Aveda school in Cool Springs when I lived closer. I decided to go for a leg wax today. With this service, you are unfortunately not able to book with a more experienced student like the other services. My student, Tiffany, was very nice but you could tell she was extremely uncomfortable, and not confident in waxing. I should've paid attention to that first red flag. It went downhill quickly from there. She struggled with the wax temp,but anyone could've had that issue. First problem was the wax was not hot enough, so she struggled to spread it on my leg. Then she would place wax on several areas without placing a strip, so the wax hardened. She was getting frazzled and letting me know. On my back thigh she put a large amount of wax and then the strip. Again it sat too long, so when she went to remove it, it was STUCK!! She was in a panic to get it off and kept apologizing to me. I tried to help by showing her what most places do to remove it. It did not work. After a good almost 8-10 minutes she ran out saying she needed her teacher. The instructor came in and tried to calm her down. They then worked together to try and get the strip off. She kept telling Tiffany it was fine and the customer "doesn't care because they know we are a school". Well this customer was worried about what was going on. They finally got the strip off, then the teacher told me I will have a bad bruise but they won't wax that area anymore and opted for tweezers. They asked me if this ever happened before and I quickly said NO.! I've been getting waxed for 30yrs and never had this happen. My waxing of just my thighs took almost 2 HOURS! Normally I'm in/out of wax appointments in 30min. What gets me is that I know at Aveda the instructors check consistently on the students through each process. This DID NOT happen for my appointment. This never should've happened. Tiffany, again very sweet, was not confident at all. It was obvious from the beginning. Her instructor, Kelly, never should have allowed her to do this unsupervised. I figured because I left with wax still stuck on my thighs, and a large bruise in the shape of a wax strip, that they would not charge me. NOPE! Not only was I charged, but when checking out they asked how it was and I told them, there was no apology from the manager. I will not ever go and get a haircut there, and now I'm leery about a mani/pedi. Sadly this was a 1 and done place for me. It's not worth the savings.

The student only consulted the instructor to determine what hair color to use. We talked to determine what I wanted and they they went to mix up the color. During the coloring process, the instructor did a "walk by" to ask if everything was ok. Other than that, no interaction for the rest of my appointment. No consult with the instructor before, during or after the cut. The student asked what kind of cut I wanted and I said just a trim 1/2". The student cut only the ends on the bottom of my hair. She started putting heat protectant on and I asked, "are you going to trim my layers?" She started picking up my hair looking for layers. She acted like there weren't any but I have layers!! She cut a little more, didn't touch my bangs. I was frustrated and finally just said it was fine. Common sense says that the pedicure should have been done first to give ample time to dry but it was done last. Pedicure was ruined when my flip flops were put on. She "fixed" it but simply put on more polish over the lumps. My toes look like 12 year old did them. My student indicated that she would be done in 2 weeks and couldn't find a job. She also said she wanted to be dog groomer but her friends talked her into doing cosmetology. She did not seem to have a passion, skill or confidence for the work she was doing. Seemed to me she has not figured out what to do with her life so she was giving this a go. The instructor was not encouraging nor helpful to this young woman as I would expect an instructor to be. I travel alot and going to an unknown salon in an unknown town is usually a crap shoot. I will seek out a cosmetology school to get a cut and a color and have had excellent results usually because there is unwavering instructor interaction. This was not the case at Image Makers. I noticed the other students were also left to do whatever they were doing without instruction, guidance, or encouragement When making an appointment, I normally will ask for a senior student, however next time I will ask for someone who truly wants to be a hairstylist and has a passion for it. I was excited to try Image Makers, as their website indicates their high expectations for students and that I found that refreshing. Instead I left frustrated and disappointed.

When you go for hair services, plan on spending half the day there. You need patience so they can do their best work. If you come in with high expectations and rush them, things may not end well. It's a very laid-back environment. Honestly, I could have sat in the chair while my stylist washed my hair all day long. They could have stopped right there and taken my money just for the head massage. I encourage you to try them out. It's obvious people are mostly happy with the results--they stay booked. PROM WEEKEND It was arranged that my daughter was going to…read morehave hair, make-up, and pictures done, by someone the day of prom... But, those plans failed, 2 days before, when they canceled on her... She had been so excited leading up to it, so she was obviously very disappointed when she received the notice... She handled the cancellation with such grace and didn't complain at all... I just saw the sadness on her face, so I was determined to get her those services... Last resort, I had decided I would use make-up and hair tutorials online and do it myself. I already had Plan B for pictures... I told my husband he was gonna use his nice Nikkon camera and follow me, our daughter, and her date around town, to the list of places I had written down... I chose scenery that were great backdrops for their photos... I was not going to allow, a last-minute cancellation, hinder my girl's day! Anyway, I desperately made phone calls and reached out to several places regarding make-up and hair, none of which were available (in 2 days)... Then, I thought, Empire Beauty School, they take walk-ins... So, i approached my daughter about it and asked if she wanted to go check it out... She agreed, so we made a visit... The person at the desk was so friendly and helpful...She said she would be there the next day... My daughter looked at the choices of services and decided on two things, make-up application and shampoo/blow dry. Once we arrived the next day, we were greeted by a familiar face... She instantly made my daughter feel at ease and gave her what I call, a massage- shampoo and special-technique blow dry... She also gave us some great hair tips! Then, my daughter went upstairs into a little room that was set up like a star's quarters, with make-up laid out, particularly for her... The Esthetician asked what my daughter desired in her make-up application... She listened attentively and followed exactly, according to her requests... My daughter is not one that normally wears much make-up, so she wanted it to be "subtle." The Esthetician carefully applied base to match my daughter's skin tone... She matched her lip and cheek color to her dress... We noted that her jewelry and shoes were sparkly silver accessories and asked if some silver sparkle eyeshadow should be used... The Esthetician pointed out, she only had gold sparkly and said she could use what we had from home... She used a little eyeshadow of ours and all other products she had on hand... The make up application included false eyelashes... But, the glue made my daughter's eyes very watery... So, she chose not to get them... The end result was what we had in mind, but Esthetician made it come into fruition. Since the experience from the shampoo/blow dry and make-up application had gone so well, my daughter decided she wanted them curl her hair too... I was excited bc it relieved me & her of trying to style it at home. The cosmetologist that did my daughter's roller set was so energetic and cheerful... She gave styling tips... She basically got my daughter more psyched for prom, making her feel so beautiful! We had set aside time for all this to take place, and my daughter had told them when she had to leave... We were there from 9am-noon, which was perfect... We got home in time for my daughter to slip into her dress and go have pictures made with her date, with her hair and makeup freshly done. Some people may complain that it took so long, but we were thrilled with them taking such care, in all that they did...The esthetician and cosmetologists were so joyful, gentle, patient, and complimentary... They made my daughter feel like a celebrity. To add, hair & make-up takes forever, when applied to real celebrities... I've actually witnessed this on set... So, go here, when you want the same treatment that famous people get. I totally forgot they were students because they were so professional...The administrator even made sure we were comfortable and pleased... I hope anyone who goes to Empire Beauty School treats them with respect and tips well... They have definitely earned my return, in general and for special occasions! I was acing the class with high test scores. If I asked the instructor questions, she took it personally and talked crap about me to the director etc. Most likely she was intimidated and not confident. One day she actually yelled at me in front of the whole class and demanded I talked to her outside the class. I said no way. I'm not trying to have a conversation with you while your angry and hostile. She was so low class and a drunk. She talked about getting drunk every weekend. Anyway, the director resolved it her way which I was unsatisfied with how it was handled. She refused to resolve it in a manner I would be comfortable returning to class which basically was a violation of the schools own policy and procedures, grievance section. Instead she literally told me not to return. I contacted THEC, COE and reported them to my local WIA career counselor. I did not file a formal complaint because I was so upset I chose to move on from the most traumatic experience I've ever had in an educational institution. You will be wasting your time and money with this wretched place.
