I was in need of a trim and looked up on Yelp the nearest barbershop to where I was. Barber-Q popped up and was fairly easy to find. Walked in and met Rosalyn. Explained what I wanted and got my haircut within 30 minutes. I tend to doze off and close my eyes when getting my haircut, but when she was done, I learned that she's been barbering almost 20 years. I also read a sign that they'll be relocating on April 3 to another location. I'd come back again if I'm in Portland in the future. read more

I was glad to find this one open & still in operation. I had been all over Portland, to find so many barber shops, I found listed, shut down permanently. I called and asked about a haircut that day and she worked me in. Best haircut I've had in a while; way better than several other recent barber shop cuts! She asked what I wanted, listened well, then went to work with shaver and scissors, cutting with artistry and precision. Worth the $40 charge, so I tipped well. I was pleased with how it looked, so she suggested that I write down what she did, for next time: #5 low fade; Scissor cut the top 1 1/2". I've been bouncing around looking for a barber ever since mine moved to Pittsburgh (dammit, Shannon). I've gone chain (disaster), I've gone young (flighty) and i've gone, hell I dunno, alternative (never trust a barber who plays his shitty hardcore band over the shop computer) and now I'm going back downtown. Quinn (or maybe Kwin? Her name wasn't on the business card) knocked out three cuts without going Bishops bowl cut on anyone. The guy in front of me said he didn't care what his hair looked like as long as it was short so he got the fast clipper treatment. I showed a little more concern so I got a little more time. I feel sorry for barbers, I'm pretty sure most guys have no idea what goes one when hair is cut nor how to describe what they want. But my hair is shorter, it took maybe fifteen minutes and cost $14. Was hard to find but worth it. HINT: Look for the White "Barber Q" fold up sign in the middle of the sidewalk which points the way. Go through the doors, past the elevators and all the way to the back wall. It's on the right. I think the haircut I got here was probably the best I've ever received. The barber (a wonderful Vietnamese lady) took her time and paid attention to detail. Not one hair was out of place when she was finished. I highly recommend this place. read more

Walked in at 415 was in a chair by 430. Easily one of the best haircuts and beard trims I've ever had. Rosalyn was my barber, and she did an amazing job. I have a (heavily) receding hairline and prefer a contemporary style... that combination is hard to deliver. Rosalyn did it with ease. And the price is spectacular. $24 for a haircut and beard trim is amazing by itself. To get a quality cut at that price, and in the middle of downtown Portland.... it's unheard of. The place is a hole in the wall, and they don't have pomade posters everywhere, and you don't get a free beer... but if that's what you want in a barber shop then you're a donkey and your mother probably doesn't love you (deservedly so). If you want a great cut at a great price and don't want to make an appointment a week out this is your place! Granted I've only been there once, and have only had one barber, but if she is a reflection of the rest of the staff, you're in good hands. read more

Located on the ground floor of the Pacific Building, kitty corner to Pioneer Square, this small barber shop offers a great price ($15) for a haircut, and you can easily get in and out in 20 minutes. They accept walk-ins but were pretty busy both of the days I was in there (once to set up an appointment, once for the haircut) so I would recommend calling ahead, or stopping by and being prepared to go elsewhere for 30 minutes while a space opens up. The woman cutting my hair was super nice and asked me a few questions before and during the cut to make sure she got it right. Good haircut, great price, and fast. I'm not sure what more you can ask for in a barber shop, except maybe a complimentary drink, which they also have (not beer though, you'll have to go somewhere that costs $40 a haircut for that). read more

This is the type of place you go to when you need a quick clean up and don't want to pay for all the bells and whistles other shops offer. A men's cut is $16 - you can't really find another shop that offers that price in downtown - most now charge at least $25. This is especially helpful for someone like me who needs a cut every 3 weeks or so. The 2 or 3 women who work here are very nice, and they do a decent job. I'll admit I've had some cuts here that were not that great, but for the price, I really can't complain. Often just having a picture on my phone helps to give them an idea of what I want. I would schedule an appointment ahead of time to be safe, often same day appointments is easy. read more

Considering my hair basically reaches my bottom, it was a great deal. I also liked this place because the lady cutting my hair let me actually explain what I wanted. Horrible hair cut. I asked for 1 on the sides and a little short on the top (but combable). The woman could not make a blend in the sides, so it ended up being a half all around. In the process, there was a weird line going around my sides and back because she couldn't blend it with the top. Proceeds to tell me it was due to the lighting in the store. She asked the other person working there, who backs get up blindly without even really looking at my hair. If it's really the lighting (which it wasn't), don't have lighting in your store that doesn't make your customers look good! Anyways, horrible location with workers who do not care how you look and will make up anything to get you out of their store. Before Barber-Q, I've never had a regular hair place before. Almost every salon I've gone to across Beaverton, Portland and Tigard has annoyed me - either being damn overpriced for a simple cut, or just plain not doing what I want and screwing it up. For years I trimmed my hair myself because it wasn't worth the irritation. I've been coming to Barber-Q for about two or three years now on recommendation of two coworkers, and I love it. Cindy is great. She always does precisely what I want her to do, she errs on the side of caution because it's always better to snip a little more than have snipped too much, she'll offer an opinion if asked, she's kind, and I never have to sit through a lot of obnoxious chit-chat or smack-talking people/hobbies/celebrities/interests like so many other stylists around town like to do. She'll converse just fine, and she's always very sweet and friendly, but she's also willing to just let things be quiet while she works. As an introvert who typically comes in on a lunch break from work, I appreciate that so much. She also has an incredible memory. After my first visit, she always remembered me, and would remember the last cut she did for me. Given that I get my hair cut maybe 2-3 times a year, that memory is incredible! One thing for customers to note - particularly women who are used to salons that do a full rinse and shampoo - is that this is barber-style, so it's cut only. You can pay additional for shampooing if you want the whole treatment, but it's not a default part of the cut. They don't do fancy extra services like dying, either. It's a very straightforward, cut-only place, great to duck into on a lunch break. read more

It's nerve wrecking to not have your barber when you're in a different city especially when my hair is thin, fine, and I have skin problems. I attempted twice to get my haircut here & both times I was turned away. I am a female but only needed the bottom-half of my head shaved. The first time I walked in and was not greeted. I spoke up & asked if they took walk-ins. They said yes but they didn't have time right now. The woman turned away from me but I asked if they took appointments. Irritated, she said yes, they do. Then I asked if I could make an appointment. Again, irritated, she said yes and scheduled me for later that day. When I returned for my appointment I was, admittedly late. I was promptly ignored by a different woman. When I announced that I had an appointment she glared at me and said that she waited five minutes for me and then scheduled someone else in my spot. Then she went back to ignoring me. I was a total of 10 minutes late. I don't know if they just aren't interested in customer service in general or maybe they just didn't want my business because I look different from the rest of the clientele. That being said, I have never written a bad review about any business but this experience was exceptionally dismissive and rude. All I can say is I do appreciate the fact that they just saved me $14 for a shave that would have taken 5 minutes. read more
