This shop was truly an elevated experience compared to some smaller barbershops I've been to. The service was on point from the moment I checked in til when I left. This was my first time here, and as a guy getting barber service, you want a barber that will take his time, make sure you walk out feeling like a king. My barber Thomas was just the right guy to take the time of the styling assessment to shave style to finishing product. Walking in the shop just smelled good, their main row of chairs was clean and the decor was modern rustic. You get greeted, they check you in, and they have a lounge as well to wait out your service. I worked with Thomas, and he had a very warm welcome and made sure to take the process of the style, cut, shape, and finishing product that was exactly what you were expecting. This experience did not disappoint. I truly appreciated his chat along throughout the experience, so it was fun and chill. I selected a skin fade with a hard part. The beard was close-knit mustache separated from the beard, which was don't chinstrap style. During the beard trim, I enjoyed the warm towel as well. It was such a chill vibe the whole time. I was informed of their 5 week shape up guarantee. This earned a very highly rated experience and look forward to my next visit. read more

I had Paul the apprentice cut my hair and give me a shave today. He did a great job for being an apprentice. I assume he will only get better with time. I know haircuts are important, but give the guy starting out a chance. Price was fair for services I got. Had a good atmosphere and will be going back again. I heard good things from a coworker about this place and decided to give it a try. Booking online was easy enough. Pretty cool looking barbershop when you arrive. Friendly staff. Bad thing is haircuts here are way over priced. $60-$95 range just for a normal men's haircut is ridiculous. But they do entice you with a Free clean up within 4 weeks of your haircut. Use it or lose it scenario. Also parking can be a nightmare, but that should be expected in the fan. My rating is primarily based on the quality of my hair cut. I arrived home and washed my hair to see uneven cuts and bad blending. I even had to fix some of the missed areas. No worries I thought, I'll go back and get my clean up in a few weeks. I go to my clean up and point out some of the issues with my previous hair cut in hopes of a little more attention to detail this time. The end result remained the same as before, if not worse. More spots were missed than my original haircut. I am literally talking about on the sides and back where they used a trimmer. Hairs twice to three times the length of the trim length just poking out all over the place. I had to take my trimmer and just try to clean it all up. And I had to fix around the ears as those hairs were long too. It is just an awful feeling to spend a lot of money on a haircut for a DIY result. If they were closer I would potentially try another barber there if it was my only option open. But I will not return as it is not close to where I live and the money is not worth the result. read more

I recently moved back to the US from China where it took me a while to find a great barber there in Shanghai. I moved back to Richmond and found Hells Bottom after visiting two other establishments. Hells bottom is far and away a superior barber. I get my hair cut by Rich. Attention to detail is excellent and he understands how my hair grows, the texture and what I want out of a haircut. Fantastic, I won't be visiting any other barbers here in RVA. Top notch cuts and kind a friendly people who arnt super douchy like some barbers here in RVA. read more

My husband has a head of thick, full hair which can be a challenge to cut. He's bounced around from barber to barber, and finally got fed up with fighting with another trendy barber shop in the Fan to not give him the same "Nazi fade" they give every one of their clients. Drove all the way from Norfolk to get a haircut/shave from Anthony. The entire staff was friendly and welcoming. I was offered a beverage as soon as I walked in and everyone made sure I was comfortable. The service was excellent. Nic works a lot with queer and gendernonconforming people and she is wonderful and affirming, great at masculine looks or something a bit more unusual. Decent fade and top cut by two different barbers. Not the best I have ever had but definitely good enough to go back. Wish they had more precision on the fade and style on the top. Very costly for a beard shape up. Most places include it or at least it's 10 bucks and under. Here they estimated 25 so I did it at home in five minutes. They do not provide you with any booze which is a bummer but it's still covid times. I do not like that some barbers give you a head massage and wash your hair while others don't. I wish it was streamlined. Although I would go back for a third cut there are better barbers at a place down the street and I only changed from there because of scheduling. read more

Wow, I can't believe I'm the 1st to review this place on Yelp - this place is AMAZING. If you're looking for a local joint to get your hair professionally done, either male or female, kid or adult - welcome to your new shop. Ryan came highly referred by all of our friends and he even showcases his work on his social media which we found to be so helpful in seeing what he specializes in. Parking is extremely easy, there's a little side lot and there's lots of free street parking. The atmosphere is very clean and modern. They offer water, coffee or tea while you're waiting in their very comfortable waiting area - GREAT welcome! They offer free consultations which was a huge plus today because Ryan took the time to get to know what Josh (my husband) liked and didn't like, wanted and what he wanted to avoid, styling preferences, etc. He was great at asking questions and truly nailing exactly what kind of cut he wanted and needed. He also gave informative tips and tricks to styling so that he could fully enjoy his hair. They offer free 15 minute trims in-between appointments to help clients get the max out of their hair without making appointments just for a little clean-up. Everyone there is extremely friendly and personable! This place is fairly new and they are still developing another area of their shop but you wouldn't know it by looking - even during a renovation, it is remarkably clean and professional. They are growing and you definitely want to say that you were a client during their "early stage" because this place is going to be THE shop in Richmond. We live in Chesterfield and we are more than happy to make the drive downtown to get his hair done. In fact, I'll be looking to meet with a stylist the next time I need my hair done! You could make an amazing afternoon of this by getting your hair cut here and then walking down the street to Sticky Rice for a yummy bite to eat! While I found myself in a predicament of being 25 min late (their policy is typically ~15-20) he graciously accepted me (huge). Lived in Richmond short term only for the past six months. When I arrived to Richmond I Yelped different barbers in the area and found the Barber of Hell's Bottom. I picked Rich to be my barber based off of one positive review that I read and I am sure glad I did. Rich was fantastic for my short stay in the city. He did a fantastic job of making me feel welcome and comfortable while giving me a great haircut every time. My interaction with the rest of the staff was fantastic as well. They even provided new barber recommendations for my upcoming move to Nashville. The barber shop is clean, modern and has a very cool vibe inside. The best perk of coming here is the free clean ups in between haircuts. You can come in anytime between you normal haircuts to have your hairline cleaned up and trimmed at no cost at all. I would recommend this barber shop and Rich to anyone looking for a new barber in the area! read more
