Every worker here seems to share a passion for books and the energy is infectious. I had to cut myself off, close my eyes, and slowly step away from the stacks. They also have some art and crafting supplies, paper goods, and vinyl. The prices are low and I think there might be some categories of people who qualify for discounts.

I do have one major issue from time to time, and if this was any other store I'd be down another star but I can't deny it's incredible place in the Chicago book world. To my best guess, this seems to be run by a male and female team. The male usually has a great answer or recommendation when asked. The female is another story. When asked about a book in the vein of another book I've been told she doesn't know, I respect that. When asked if they had a book recently featured on Instagram the response was "I don't run the Instagram just dm them"....as she was actively on her phone and I'm in the store with money to spend. I'm sorry to bother you. When asked "do you have this book, it's scifi I think?" "I don't know" - note I found it on a top shelf about 10 mins later. When asked "I saw a rare ($500) book here last week but I don't see it now, did it sell?" "I don't know, it might be at a book fest so if it doesn't sell it will be here next week" I'm about to buy a pretty expensive book and you can't text the person at the fest to find out? I can pay for it now. Instead I guess I'll buy it online somewhere else. I don't bother shopkeepers when it's busy - these were not busy times. But the level of not caring on her end, and losing some sales in the process is so disappointing. I'm not here to bother you, I just want to buy some stuff

I have watched over the years (since 2014) as Bookends & Beginnings has morphed from a dream into beautiful reality, but it is still the product of Nina's mind and her dreams. The new location next to Fountain Square was cut from whole cloth. It began as a large empty piece of real estate all painted in white--a blank canvas!--and was transformed into what it is today: a carefully planned and executed space on two levels painted in dark teal, gold, and white, with a hand-picked selection of over 10,000 books arrayed attractively and intelligently. (Not to mention a reak carousel horse and a giant paper-maché giraffe.) The striking floor-to-ceiling mural, the work of her two graphic-artists sons, presides over the store and is visible day and night. You really should check out Bookends & Beginnings, if you don't know it already!

I've had nothing but great experiences at Roscoe Books! There are many lovely local bookstores in…read moreChicago, but this one has become my home base. I pretty much always have a book on order from them at any given time and they're always speedy and communicative. Every time I've placed an order for a book I've gotten a response within an hour that it was on its way and a time frame in which to expect it. (And I'm not talking an automated response, but an actual typed response from a human being!) There have been times when my book has somehow miraculously arrived within 24-48 hours of ordering! The only time a book has ever taken longer than expected to arrive and when I called to ask why they informed me that it had arrived damaged and they opted to order in a fresh copy for me. As a lifelong comic book collector, I've been conditioned to be a condition freak when it comes to my books and I'm so glad to know that instead of being put in an awkward position of coming in to pick up an order and seeing it's not in good condition and being anxious about saying anything that they went this route instead. Amazon could NEVER. If I ever move to a different neighborhood for whatever reason, I'd be happy to go out of my way to continue supporting Roscoe Books after so many stress-free, friendly experiences there.
