If we could have, we would have stayed longer for the hotel bar and especially to have more of Moritz's creations!

Staying at the Westin Grand, I stopped by one late evening after the Oktoberfest had closed down but I wasn't tired enough to hit my bed due to jet lag. Sitting at the bar, I met Marco and Szabo, and warmed quickly to their hospitality. Their liquor selection is absolutely stunning, and I started on what I still can't easily find in the States - top-notch Cuban rum. A few nights later, I decide I wanted a taste of home, and asked Szabo if he could make me a Sazerac. He laughed, and said of course. Watching him at work, with rye, cognac, absinthe, and a bitter I haven't seen before which put Peychaud's to shame, I knew I was in the presence of a master. Szabo later confirmed that he'd spent many years in different cities both behind the bar and competing in cocktail competitions. He also has a keen mind for suggesting what fits at any given time, and he managed to cure a nasty bit of heartburn with a shot of Hungarian Unicum. This is a quiet and civilized place to either start or end your night. While it is quite distant for a regular resident of München, if you're staying at either the Sheraton or Westin in Arabellapark, Ducktail's is not to be missed.

Towards the end of my stay in Munich it seemed like the staff was a little unhappy with management, and the service levels dropped a little, but hands down this was one of my favorite places in Munich.

This cozy Portuguese bar is in quiet neighborhood just 5min walk out of Munich Ost Barnhof (Munich…read moreEast station). I visited two occasions (both dinner time at around 7pm) but no need to wait as it's a little bit off the busy touristic area. Bar itself is pretty large size, it can take group people easily. In my case, I went alone for first night and took my family (four) on second time. Both worked very well without much loud crowd and served very well. We ordered baguette in Ali-oli (garlic olive dip), sea food risotto (which was not on the menu) and seafood stew (like bouilabaisse). Also I have tried two tapas: oil sardine and grilled seafood grill (Fischeintopp). All are good. Sardine was served in a small thin plate, it was sour with a lot of olive oil in it. Great starter with alcohol (BTW I had Sangria as aperitif, maybe not the best match to it though). Seafood tapas was nice but not necessarily a special taste. The highlight of the dinner was risotto. It was not on the menu, but I saw someone has posted it on Yelp so I asked waitress if they can cook it. She negotiated with chef and said "YES!". I had no special expectation about it, just imagined some fish meat was cooked with rice and cheese... but after all it turned out to very positive surprise due to it's taste and presentation. That special risotto has a big shrimp, thick but well cooked fresh squid leg, tomato and mushroom. Source was incredible tasty with a rich cheese flavor with some kind of fish based soup and great mixture of tomato and mushroom taste in it... IT WAS MY BEST RISOTTO EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!! Squid leg was also really soft and good, it has great taste and feeling which is not easy to find in a restaurant in Munich (where seafood is not a mainstream). However, since it's a special order, you cannot expect it to be available all the time. It might depend on business of the bar, availability of chef and enough seafood. Price was under 19 Euros. Seafood stew was also pretty nice, it comes in a larger size pot (big for one person) and got a lot of fish meat (salmon?), vegetables (potato, paprika, carrot, onion etc.) in a rich fish soup. We liked atmosphere, taste and service so much. The lady (forgot her name) was very helpful and friendly. This experience made us so fun and brought good memory... We will surely come back again in future!

So happy I found this place…read more Located a hop, skip and a jump from Rosenheimer Platz, this place was my savior after a day at the Wiesn. Having had my fill of beer, I just wanted a glass of seltzer (or mineral water or whatever you choose to call it). Now, don't get me wrong, I love Germany but everywhere they seem to serve water in tiny glasses. I wanted a giant glass of water...and the awesome bartender set me up with a half liter glass full of sparkling water. So I had my water, which helped a lot and now I needed food. Luckily, even in my state I was able to read the menu and see they had a cheeseburger and fries platter. I know, not Bavarian but at that point, all I'd had all day since breakfast was one of these ginormous pretzels and the skin off of some roast chicken. The food was tasty (as far as I can recall) and it really helped getting some food on my tummy. Aside from the water and food, what made this place great was the service. The bartender, whose name I regret that I didn't get, was amazing. She was so nice and friendly and really took care of me. I'm sure I looked like another tipsy American tourist but she was a sweetheart. She had short hair and glasses and maybe some tattoos. Anyway, she's the real deal. There was some music that was nice too. Overall, a nice, friendly, clean and welcoming place. To be frank, it can be intimidating to enter a big German beer hall by yourself because it seems everyone knows one another and you're an outsider. Coming here was the exact opposite...I felt welcome right away. Definitely recommend this place!
