Gayle and I spent a nice part of a recent day in Donastia on a Pintxos crawl, let by Gartxot, our intrepid tour guide and all around great guy. After our first stop at Bar Haizea, Gartxot's fascinating commentary continued, including the Pintxos restaurant scene and individual reputations.
We sat outside, as the day was pleasant and the street energy was fun. We also saw the cutest dog that we saw on our trip. This sweet txakurra (dog) had his people and was loved. However, we would have taken a dog like that home in a heartbeat.
A few observations while dining in Spain: No one looks at their phones while eating with others, wine costs the same as if you bought it in the store (in other words, no mark up like in American restaurants), and portions are HUGE.
Here's what we very much enjoyed:
- Puntalettes with Creamy Gras, Wild Berries, and Crunchy Ham
- Txipiguettis (Pasta Looking Squid) with Bolognese
- Oxtail Sandwich
- Txakoli and Albarino Wine
We had a funny "lost in translation" moment when Gartxot mistakenly referred to the Oxtail Sandwich as Bull Penis. After I made some inappropriate sexist remark, Gayle gobbled it down. After all, why not break out of your food comfort zone when visiting a foreign land? :) read more
