We found Barracuda and decided it was a great option because 1) it has a rooftop bar, and 2) there's no cover (unlike a certain jazz club down the street). We arrived late in the evening, so the first two floors were quiet. We made our way up to the third floor and a handful of staff greeted us and let us sit wherever we wanted. We chose a table nearest the street corner where we could look out and enjoy the view. Given the smog in Santiago, we couldn't see much beyond the neighborhood, but it was a fun time nonetheless.
The ambiance downstairs definitely feels like a college-town dive bar with its random decor. But the rooftop makes you feel you're in a different restaurant altogether, even if the menu is the same.
The staff brought us a drink menu and we decided to order a bottle of Carmenere for the table, which was reasonably priced at around $13.500clp. We were surprised to see that they also carry a very expensive bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon priced around $69.000clp. We put in our order, but about five minutes later, another server came over to let us know that they were out of the bottle we chose. We said it was no problem and that we would have whatever was similar on the menu. When the bottle arrived, it was evenly distributed among our three large wine glasses, which still had the remnants of a price tag on the bottom of the glass. Upon our first sips, we realized this was a very "jammy" wine and nothing like a Carmenere. We took a closer look at the bottle and realized it was not a Carmenere at all as we'd requested but was instead a Cab Sauv. We all had a tinge of trepidation as we sipped our wine, wondering whether they had brought us the super-expensive bottle. When the bill arrived at the end of the evening, we all breathed a collective sigh of relief seeing that the bottle was only $15.000clp. Whew!
Would I come back here? Sure! But with so many options and great nightlife in this neighborhood, it might be a while before I return and finally try their Carmenere.
