I was informed by a local that Caffe Tommaseo was a good choice. And indeed, it was. Built in 1830, Caffe Tommaseo is officially the oldest extant cafe in Trieste. Upon entering, it took awhile to regain my bearings and focus on what I wanted to eat: the opulent interior is filled with carved wall adornments and regal Habsburgian-furniture that exudes an Austrian-influenced Italian atmosphere. I ordered an espresso and prosciutto sandwich, and a caprese cake for dessert. The espresso came with a side of fresh whipped cream that was divinely silky. The sandwich was satisfying, though far from the best I've had in Italy--overall, the food is just average (though still great by American standards), and prices fine, if a bit overpriced. However, with its convenient location near the port, stunning interior, and historical value, I still consider Caffe Tommaseo a great stop for sipping on some coffee and taking a moment to feel like a noble.
