You just look at the line-up for the…read moreweek and find yourself tittering at all the creative names on the bill, from The Clone Roses to Fink Ployd, Kinda Kinks to Who's Next. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they're making up these monikers in band meetings. Did you know that tribute bands make a heck of a lot of money? I have a lot of musician friends, one of whom packs away shedloads drumming for a Status Quo copy. You'd be surprised, but people absolutely love bands that try to look like and/or play the songs of other people. Is there a Meat Loaf tribute in the UK called Malt Loaf? Please let there be. In fact I'm Googling it. YES! http://www.myspace.com/maltloaftribute How truly fantabulous. I'm veering off the point slightly. Let me gather my thoughts. I've seen a few in my time, but my favourite FAVOURITE act at the Witchwood (apart from the support band I was actually there to see) was Ironically Maiden. Once I'd finished giggling myself into my Southern Comfort it was a definite bonus to watch them. I think part of the fun of tribute bands is that they're very tongue-in-cheek, so there's a comedy element to some of the performances... well, certainly in Ironically Maiden's case, that much is for sure. Leather pants and huge onstage mascots aside, the Witchwood is a great little pub in the centre of Ashton. It's perfect for live music and has a pleasant outdoor area. It turns into a club on a Friday night, open until 3am with free admission before 10pm AND a free bar. You're spoiling us! The drinks in general here are very reasonably priced, and it considers itself a real ale pub, so if you happen to be in the area, pop in for some entertaining music. You won't regret it.

Entry was (and apparently still is) free and the DJ, Tom Smith (still there, I checked!) was really fun! The Witchwood is a wonderful live music venue, too. Although it's a pretty small place, there's a good sized stage, which has seen loads of touring, tribute and local bands play over the years. It's a particularly good place to catch old punk bands there always seems to be at least one scheduled to play here! UK Subs are lined up at the moment. If you prefer something a little quieter than a gig or clubnight, there's also a separate bar at the front of the building, which has some great real ales. It's a lot calmer than the chaos of the backroom and you get a really interesting mix of people going in. Like most of the people who work here, all the bar staff are lovely, and the booze is very reasonably priced.

Having been to the establishment in Chorlton many times, I was pleasantly surprised when a friend…read moresuggested we go to the Laundrette in town. Recently opened, the new restaurant is one of the few on First Street so it is quite easy to find. Obviously we took advantage of the January offer and judging by how busy it was on a Tuesday night, so did a lot of other people! Walking it the vibes were really good with great lounge music playing and people chatting away. The menu and drinks offerings seemed to be the same and prices very reasonable. We all knew what we wanted to have anyway- our favourite burger or pizzas! We started with a sharing platter which would probably suit 2 people more than 4, but everything on the board was cooked perfectly. We especially liked the spicy mayonaise as it had a good kick to it. I really liked the burger- big thick and juicy with accompaniments to match and we ordered 1more mac and cheese to share halfway through our meal cos we couldn't get enough of it! The staff were really friendly and bubbly which made the night an even better experience. We sat on the outside tables, so you might want to watch out for the heaters, as they are really hot! I must say, I was very impressed with this restaurant, and dare I say it, as good as the original!

The atmosphere was great fantastic tunes playing in the background which really got us excited for the night ahead of us. We got three drinks one of which was a shared which was served in a massive popcorn container! It was delicious and worth the money. If coming here definitely try one of the cocktails they are gimmicky and very fun to drink! A great place for a catch up session with the girls and for prepping a night out on the town. I will be back!
