Stop the Presses!
There is a new heritage centre in town, and by any standard it is amazing.
I first got to come her on a risk assessment for work, and the staff we met were some of the most genuinely nice people I've worked with externally from the school team. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left the staff asked us questions and built a lesson plan specific to the whole group of young people with varying support needs.
On the day of the visit itself, the staff were again on top form, and those who had a role to play in our visit, remained in character and full of enthusiasm for our group, no matter how much, or how little enthusiasm they got back. The open and supportive nature of the staff was enough o keep our Young People engaged and happily involved in all that was to offer.
My first impressions of the venue were, admittedly underwhelming, but the grand looking facade of the building, gives way to a crisp clean environment which sweeps into the main space and is open plan and great to see. The main learning zone is fascinating and a technological dream, with interactive holograms and a 3D battle suite be prepared to feel like you have landed back in the camps on the the eve of the Battle of Bannockburn. With so much detail and physical weapons and armour on display, it is easy to get lost in a magnificent achievement which brings history to life.
The Battle room is however the star of the show, and any group of Young People will not be able to help getting drawn into their own personal battle, will Edward finally triumph over the Scots, or will you or your children follow in the footsteps of The Bruce himself, and lead Scotland to another glorious victory, only your decisions will enable you to find out.
Yes, there is a price to pay to get in, but if you are intending a day out this year with a small or a large group consider coming here.
I cannot recommend this venue enough.
(Also, lunch was fantastic, hot or cold food available, and coffee so tasty, I almost had two.) read more
