Being able to reserve the room is about the only thing I like about this place...oh and street parking. It is a completely over the top "Aussie" themed bar. Themed as in it has all the terribly tacky, tourist ideas of Australia. The toilets are named Blokes and Sheilas, there is swamp/beach style decor, and not a single aussie accent on the staff, which I'm actually quite pleased they weren't required to imitate an Australian accent. It's fairly priced, and the food, although I didn't get any this time, is...adequate. The upstairs room has it's own bar, but they have never had it staffed when we've been. It gets quite busy and loud in the main bar area, and is honestly somewhere I'd rather avoid.

Stirling's resident Yelp expert, Nicola C recommended here with the disclaimer of "I don't know what it's like during the day though." So, my friend and I pitched up to be greeted by two regulars at the door who told us the pub was closed. "Awwww, really?" I said. "Naw hen!" followed by much guffawing on their behalf. In we stumbled, both having a laugh at the two oldies. The bar was empty apart from one other old gent which seems reasonable for 4.30pm on a Friday. We got a couple of drinks (Thistly Cross bottles for £3.50 each which is what I pay for them in the supermarket!) and sat by the fire (which thankfully someone came and stoked the hell out of so it was absolutely roaring, and scorching hot). The bar had a nice relaxed vibe. By the time we were leaving one of the regulars was well steaming and came over to talk to the Australian lassies and generally give us a bit of a ribbing. He got us to sign the visitors book and was generally pretty funny - I even got a kiss as I was leaving. Lucky me. So, would I recommend going here? Aside from it being a really great place for a gig, the bar area has a really nice vibe. It's relaxed and friendly and I don't remember it being too expensive. I like that the band have to walk past the crowd to get to the stage and although the main hall seems rather small, it is just the perfect sort of cosey for an intimate gig. It's versatile too. - I went to see the comedian Daniel Sloss and the main hall had been rearranged to suit the night. I felt like I was in a different venue! Tolbooth doesn't match the size of venues to be found in Glasgow or Edinburgh, but it sure does pack a punch.

I've learned fiddle tunes, songs, creative writing, and discovered that I love free jazz in this building. Highlights of my adult years have included Treacherous Orchestra, Lau, The Weekend jazz/alt music festival (sadly discontinued), Distil Showcase of new compositions, Jenna Reid Band and The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc. As long as I live in the central belt I'll be happy to support this trad venue, with its fantastic sound engineers and everything it does for traditional music. It's one of few venues outside the big cities that brings Scotland's best trad musicians to the masses, and continues to host both the beset of up-and-coming artists and established names like Breabach and Dick Gaughan. Nothing but praise for this noble wee venue that punches well above its weight.

'The new bar's called the Currrrly Coo.' It rolled off our tongues easily and was playful and fun. - I'm a 'Weegie so, naturally, I love to roll my rs! Now, wait a second...Here was me getting all excited about the latest whisky bar in town when I don't even drink the stuff! Alas, they have a great selection of other lovely things. My favourites being gin and that very, very tasty Elderflower Thistly Cross cider. I've been in the Coo a few times now and whilst it is still on the quiet side as a new bar, it seems to be growing in popularity little by little. Mandy, the owner, is an intense but lovely lady who is strict about her rules in turning the pub around from the rowdy, loud reputation it had previously. She certainly knows her stuff about whiskey, with a 'drammy' award for her previous bar in Creiff and plans for whisky tasting nights in the near future. With every visit, there's been a new quirk to her bar. - I love the book collection and the super teeny whisky bottles. Not to mention the painting of the 'Coo' in question in the corner. It would be nice to see some candles, I think that would really fit with the feel of the bar. When we had been booked as a band to play an hour set at the Coo, we were nervous. On our first visit we were the only people in the bar and Mandy told us of the folk music scene she wanted to welcome to the pub. It didn't sit well with the fact that the jukebox played generic pop songs. And that's one of the major factors for me for the pub. With some nice music, the bar changes completely! We put some Dylan on the jukebox and, with a little bit of folk, it certainly feels closer to the folk-whiskey haven Mandy's been dreaming of. Prices are a little on the expensive side but what you're getting really is premium. With 150 varieties of whiskey, a hefty gin collection and the most popular local ciders all in one place, you're spoiled for choice. Whilst at first I was unsure of the Curly Coo, I only hope that things improve because this bar has so much potential. Just be sure to take some money for the jukebox!

She did a cracking job and it was a great introduction for a meal out in Stirling. I'm not a biggest fan of Mediterranean food but I do enjoy certain aspects to it and I'm always up for trying different flavours and foods. There was seven of us in total and I was unsure what to go for so an excellent mutual decision was made to go for the Chef's Selection for £14.95 each, which allowed you to try lots of options from their menu. This was a brilliant idea so if there was something I wasn't too keen on there was someone else happy to munch in, so nothing went to waste. There was so many courses, I forgot how many there was that it felt like a never ending amount of food came to our table. It was awesome! My favourite was the wee cheeky side order I had of halloumi but make sure you get the lutza halloumi as it comes with pork medallions. Yum! The chorizo was the best I've ever tasted, I'm not the greatest fan but the way it was cooked made it really tasty. We had falafel, chicken wings, lamb kofte, olives, hummus, lots of pita bread, Greek gyros and baba ghanoush. By the last course though I had to force myself, I think I may have had too many helpings of pita and hummus. Ooops! But is tasted so goooood. It's an alternative meal out with good quality food and the staff are lovely. We did have a few waits in between courses but then it's a popular restaurant but with good company and banter it didn't seem so bad. It's relaxed and welcoming and you don't need to get dressed up if that isn't your thing. I've been to the Citz a few times over the years - ages ago to see A Clockwork Orange, and on Friday to see Trainspotting. Buying tickets online is really easy, and if you're a local you can get 50p tickets which I think is such a brilliant idea. In the foyer there's a bar and seating so you can have a drink while you wait for the show to start - we decided to just have water but they have the usual bar selection you'd expect. And there's a bar upstairs. Inside the theatre is comfy and cosy - we were in the third row and had an amazing view of the stage (at points, almost *too* amazing). I don't want to give away much about Trainspotting aside from saying if you don't have tickets already, you really need to get them as it's an amazing stage production and the cast are truly brilliant. The building itself is worth a visit alone - they have tours which are worth booking onto as I learned so much and really appreciated the behind-the-scenes perspective. They also offer acting classes for kids and adults, and have a range of other ways of getting involved with the theatre. I'm definitely going to be visiting more often - I really enjoyed doing something a bit different for a night out and still can't stop thinking about how good Trainspotting was, days later!

It puts on varied, interesting, and locally focussed plays both new and old, and does a great work promoting upcoming artists and playwrights. It's a great, comfortable theatre, not too big, and with good, comfortable seats. The legroom is pretty good, and the views are solid as well. There is a good (and relatively cheap) bar and cafe in the main foyer, as well as a smaller bar upstairs. The foyer can be a little crowded at the start of a sold out show, but it does generate a good atmosphere. It also does lots of cool stuff - backstage tours, acting classes, and discounted tickets for people that stay in the local area. I suppose my only negative is the parking, which can be a little chaotic on the way out, especially if your fellow theatre-goers are a little rude (I'm looking at you, the couple in the white Renault Clio at Trainspotting!). In many ways, a theatre is only as good as the plays it puts on, and in this the Citz excels: new runs of classic Scottish plays like Trainspotting, Slab Boys, and Lanark; interesting versions of classic plays, and first runs of new, local plays. There really is something for everyone, even a great alternative pantomime at Christmas. Keep an eye on the schedule, find something you like, and give it a go! You'll definitely come back!
