    Grand Hotel - Beach huts

    Grand Hotel

Let me preface by saying this hotel probably was Grand in its hay day but that was many years ago…read more I overall rated the hotel a 4 because the service is a 5 but the hotel rooms are a 3. Let's start with service. Every employees is very friendly and attentive to your needs. I stayed here with my husband in one room, my mother in law in another room and my sister and law and her family in one of the family rooms. Every morning we would go and order our made to order breakfast of bacon, toast, beans, sausage, full English, cheeses and hams, cereal, fruits etc... while at breakfast almost everyday, our room we be made up for the day. Fresh towels if we wanted and re-stocking of tea and biscuits in room. The bar staff were great and the one night we had dinner on site was great as well! The rooms... from what I've read the third floor was remodeled and those are the photos they use for the advertisements. We all had rooms on the second floor. Rooms 207, 208 and 209 to be exact. The furniture and decor is outdated and the bed was rather u comfortable to sleep on. The bathroom in 207 was very old and the shower was almost like a cave and had mold in it. I know it was clean but still is much to be desired. It was very hot for England last week when we were in Swanage and it was nice that the hotel provided fans in each room to get through the night. Room 208 was a family room and had a double bed and a single bead well as a larger updated bathroom. The big positive of this hotel is the views of the beach and town. It's a great location where you can walk down about 80 steps to the beach where there is nice sandy areas to lay out and there are two beach restaurants very close by for food and chair rentals. It only takes about 10 minutes to get into the center of town if walking as well! You cannot beat the location! Other amenities of the hotel include a small but old gym (don't expect top of the line machines here), a small pool and hot tub as well as a sauna on the bottom floor that walks out to the back garden and beach area. Overall even though it needs updated, the hotel was a nice and the service made up for the lack of remodeling.

Priory Hotel - A sitting room at the Priory Hotel

This isn't a proper review of the Priory as I've never stayed there; we just pop in for coffee or…read morefor a stroll in the beautiful gardens as it's one of the most romantic hotels in the world (several friends have told of 'lost weekends' there and it's not hard to imagine). A priory for many centuries (13), the old stones overlook the river Frome, up which the Vikings once sailed. This smallish country-town hotel has only 18 bedrooms, and so remains peaceful even if full. My only complaint is that the coffee isn't that good, and in a place so quintessentially English, finding mainly Polish staff lessens the experience somewhat. Imagine finding someone there who has never read 'The Wind in the Willows' or Three Men in a Boat' or doesn't appreciate Gertrude Jeykell!

An old converted Priory set in a quaint old town next to the church. A lovely girl showed us around the 3 remaining rooms - we chose the quirky top floor with original wooden beams, lots of character, views on the canal, countryside and back garden. Lovely big bathtub and shower.. comfy bed... and everything you could want in a room. The hotel itself is great top to bottom... croquet in the back.. pond full of lily pads, luscious gardens and views across and down the canal. Little boat houses can be stayed in as well that have their own gardens and sitting areas. Staff are attentive and down to earth, especially the little blond who grew up nearby, very professional in the most natural of ways and full of chat. On this lovely weekend could not have found somewhere better. Champagne at sunset on the back terrace, strolls around the ground, losing horribly at croquet, yummy dinner and breakfast. There are lots of common rooms as well which will be more appreciated in the winter. I would go back anytime.... and highly recommend for weddings, romantic weekends away.. and for lovers of castles as Corfe Castle is a short drive away and one of the best around.

When I arrived in the…read moreevening, I was greeted warmly by the lovely staff and pointed in the direction of my room. When I entered it was a cosy double room with an ensuite and supposedly when the sun is up you can see the ocean and beautiful cliffs! Unfortunately as soon as I entered there was a power cut for the whole street so I couldn't see a thing.... I headed back down to the reception where the lights were flickering - I wish it had been Halloween that would've been so awesome! The staff apologised profusely, though it wasn't there fault! and moved me to a room that had lamps that weren't reliant on electricity. Lucky me, the room was amazing! I was moved to the four poster bed room, which was huge, the bed was comfortable and there was so much space. I absolutely felt like I could've stepped back in time, which I loved! The WiFi wasn't particularly strong in the room and came and went sporadically but that was ok. There were a few giant flies buzzing around the room which I had a bit of a war with (we both lost) but they seemed to have disappeared by morning. The shower was great, and the bed was comfortable, I had the best sleep I've had in ages! The bar and restaurant both have great menus depending on what you're in the mood for - something a little more fancy or something more casual. I opted for the casual and I have the say the baked potato was awesome! The breakfast in the morning has a reasonably good selection though if you have allergies (eg. can't eat gluten or lactose) there isn't a whole lot of options except for the fruit. Though the cooked breakfast menu looked great as well. Again, the staff went out of their way to make my stay more comfortable. It's a really lovely hotel. Overall it was a really great stay and I'd happily stay again.

I'd highly recommend anyone heading to Swanage to stay in this cute building. Located being the town hall, which is a gorgeous building itself, is a lovely lodge with a handful of neatly presented rooms. We stayed for a couple of nights and the hosts were extremely accommodating, even leaving their Friday night plans to come and meet us on our late arrival. The double room was a decent size, hand a huge comfy bed, a lovely tray of teas and coffees etc, and a neat, compact ensuite that looked brand new and squeaky clean and was full of lots of nice toiletries. The lodge is located on the high street, so very close to restaurants and the seashore. When we arrived late in the evening the host kindly informed us that most of the pubs had closed their kitchens but recommended a couple of nearby places that stay open later. We had a delicious meal in an Italian place he suggested we try - it was lovely. Breakfast was cooked and served in a gorgeous room. The options were great - full English, smoked salmon and eggs or kippers (whole or filler) and eggs. There was also a huge range of nuts, seeds, dried fruit and grains to make your own bespoke muesli as well as a variety of stewed fruits and yoghurts too. It was brilliant! Staying there for two nights meant we got to indulge in both the full English and fish breakfasts. To our delight, they also left a Kilner hat outside our room with freshly made cookies at mid morning too. It was such a nice touch! Everyone staying there was happy and the hosts made an effort to chat to us all and talk about different walks and places we could visit. They really went out of their way to make our stay brilliant. Definitely a rare gem in a crowded B&B market!
