He looks gruff and stoic, but really opened up in a caring way during our short convo about our families, how long he's been in France, when he left Vietnam, and more. This place is pretty authentic folks, take it from a guy who has been making his own pho at home for decades. The broth is meaty but clean, coats the lips the way it should, and makes the taste buds dance with anise, cinnamon, fennel... The Dac Biet is more spartan than other places in the world, but the rare beef, well done brisket, and beef balls were just perfect. I was happy and surprised to see sawtooth coriander in Strasbourg along the fresh veggies (save for one slightly sad looking basil leaf). It's delicious. It warms you up from the inside out. And it's a welcoming flavor departure from all the charcroute, Munster cheese, and tarte flambee you've been gorging on.

Service however was fast and friendly. I don't know why they decided to already add hoisin sauce to the pho? I didn't realize it was there until I started mixing everything. I think a good pho broth is already tasty on it's own so i was sad to see my broth slowly turning more and more brown as I mix it. Also I don't know if it's to cater to the German tongue but the pho was on the sweeter side. The beef slices weren't thin enough, by the time it got to me, they were thoroughly cooked and hard to bite. The spring roll: it was awkwardly wrapped, which is fine because it the flavor that matters. There is a rather sizeable piece char siu and a whole shrimp so that was rather generous. The peanut sauce however was way too salty. I've no idea what the other dishes tastes like. My boyfriend ordered a Banh Mi and he seemed to have enjoyed his sandwich. I went in with high hopes and chose to stick to the classics, unfortunately it didn't really work out for me.

Since then they have new owners and the place is spruced up a bit, but the food is still delicious and best of all, one of the few casual restaurants in downtown Rastatt open on a Sunday (until 8pm!). I've had several of their dishes, and I especially love the beef Pho (served without tendon; I guess Germans don't like that). They also do a good delivery business by phone; I saw the carrier load up his car and speed off at least twice during this visit. They are a small place, so parties over 4 are not recommended to eat in. Love it!
