It's obvious by reading many of the complaints that most people have been misinformed about how outbound calls are routed. When you see a caller id CID, that only shows up because the server is configured to show it. One does not need to own a single phone number to make outgoing calls at all as the phone number has absolutely nothing to do with an outbound call's routing. If you do a carrier lookup the ONLY thing that will tell you is that if YOU call that number, the call will be routed to that number through the carrier listed. Phone numbers, officially called DIDs which means Direct Inward Dialing ONLY apply to incoming calls. I have had my DIDs assigned through Bandwidth for years and ONLY my incoming calls come through them. When I make outgoing calls, I have it set to choose from eight carriers that do premium routing and at that exact moment have it choose the least expensive of the premium routes which fluctuates throughout the day and different carriers are used when I make calls at different times. My outgoing caller ID, since I run my own server and phone system is put there by me and only by me as courtesy to the callee so that they can call that number back and it WILL get routed through Bandwidth to me directly as that is is the number's only true function. I can choose to show anything for outgoing CID or nothing at all as it is not needed to make an outgoing call once again. Legally I can only send CID numbers that I own or none at all. I can legally put in my cellphone number to show as CID to YOU since I own it. Let's just say that I am doing the latter and you receive my call and you decide to look it up, ok now you think based on what you have been misinformed with, do a carrier lookup on the number that I CHOSE to have displayed to YOU and you see T-Mobile, in this instance T-Mobile was not used in any leg of the call whatsoever yet I can legally do so. Since my outgoing calls are a balance with quality and cost, the hypothetical call I sent you could have gone through AT&T, Verizon, Inteliquent, Peerless, Iristel, Lanck, Bandwidth by luck of the draw and several others. Illegally I could have my server show the number of the White House if I wished to but I won't unless I have permission for a time slot to demonstrate to the public as to why a Carrier Lookup for an incoming call to YOU is meaningless. I will NOT show any number that does not belong to me. Like the FTC tells you, do NOT trust your Caller ID, if you do trust it implicitly and decide to do a reverse check and get the address of the person who really DOES own the number yet who did not call you and you post the personal information of the person you THINK called you on one of the vigilante forums and someone who is unhinged causes harm or death to that person, then the blood is on your hands all because you thought the calls were coming through one of Bandwidth's millions of legitimate DID assignees and you thought you were being smart based on what you have been erroneously taught and doing something about it. This needs to stop people! If a scammer calls you, your caller id certainly means absolutely nothing as to what carrier was even used (for the umpteenth time) to terminate the scammer's outbound call because I can't say it enough, phone numbers have zero to do with outbound calls. https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/robocalls The ONLY certain way you would know if Bandwidth was selling service to scammers is by looking at Bandwidth's financial records which neither the vigilante sites nor any of YOU or I have access to. Onvoy and Peerless get blamed the same exact way as people are doing here. It really depends on the geographical region as scammers like to display numbers near you. I sincerely hope that Stir/Shaken of which the deadline is this coming week on June 30th, halts most of it. Stir/Shaken is being implemented exactly because as of yet there had been no certificate process added to call headers to verify that the call you receive is legitimate because caller id has nothing to do with how outgoing calls are routed. The way it will work is that a certificate will be added to the sip headers of outgoing calls only if the call is coming from where it is authorized to come from. If the caller id you see was meaningful in any way, we wouldn't be implementing Stir/Shaken. What you WILL see is that an unverified call will show as such. For reference, the PSTN or Ma Bell is going away, it is too costly and limited to maintain and the experts have all retired or even died by now. If you use VoLTE with your cell company, it is Voice Over IP (VOIP) which is why you can use HD voice. Wideband Voice Codecs cannot be used over the PSTN which is Public Switched Telephone Network by the way. Many if not most people use VOIP whether they know it or not and by 2030 it all will be. I've had several calls over the last 2 day(8 times!) from these people trying to get me to pay almost $500 for a $4k extended warranty on my vehicle... I've asked them repeatedly to stop calling me and I'm not interested and they call MORE! So today I let them go though their entire spiel and then had her repeat it over again twice LMAFO! After the 3rd time I told her I was reporting her "company" to the FTC and BBB. This company provides phone numbers that can be used to impersonate others or appear to be from others. I'm sure there are some legit purposes but if you read the Legal page there are all kinds of warnings about potential to abuse the number. If you look up Spoofing, there are people who do misuse this way of making false texts etc. For example from their computer they can send their phone a text as if from a relative or employer insisting on funds for some seemingly legit purpose, then send a screen shot of that text to corroborate a request for money. They can then give you permission to communicate with their employer or whomever and they are actually at the other end answering you, no employer. I received a PHONY Social Security call that is automated and not real!!! It is a SCAM. The telephone number was issued by Bandwith.com...I heard the call and knew it was a robocall. I called them back to see if I could see what I could find out more info so I could report them to the Social Security hot line. The voice you hear is bubbly and hard to make out as if from overseas ( probably forwarded). The person answers "hello." No official office name, and then the inaudible voice. The call was traced to California. A personal number originating from California issued from Bandwith.com.!!!!!! This is not to say that Bandwidth .com is involved in the scams,but that you can obviously obtain a phone number from them without being legitimate. Got an email today saying that somebody try to spend $7 on my PayPal account..so I look at the account summary for PayPal and there's no record of anything being spent today at that amount. Anyway I call and this Indian guy from Pakistan with a thick Abu Indian accent answers and tries to tell me his name is Ron Wilson but you can barely understand him from his Indian so thick Indian accent so red flag number one..then he told me I've been account has been hacked and that the only way to fix it is to buy $100 Google play card and it will totally said it will totally be be reimbursed back to me on my credit card but all I have to do is pay $100 and send send him all the information on it and they will fix everything ....so I'm thinking out big-time scam so I tell him I'm at work and I can't do anything till 5 and I will contact him after I get the car and give him the information but he called me exactly at 5 right when I get off and he called me three times actually and I listened to the voicemail on these wanting the information from the car and making want to know if I bought the card and I need the card number.. I have been receiving Telephone telemarketing Sales calls, Scam calls, Fraud calls and many computer Robo computer call and some with hang ups. I have researched the calls and traced many of them are subcreiber users of carrier BANDWIDTH.COM CLEC LLC out of Raleigh, NC. I have sent them numerous complaint letters, even statements for damages to them, without satisfaction or results. These calls violate numerous Federal Statutes: " Fed. telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991, The Fed. DO NOT CALL Act, Fed. truth In Caller ID Act of 2008, FDTPA," and note that two or more federal statute violations is consuidered an organized crime act and falls under ther RICO Act. Requests to have consumer number deleted ignored, bills for damages ignored, requests to sop calls by these scammers ignored. The FCC, even FTC are useless. A Class action lawsuit is perhaps left to us as only resort. In these cases, Bandwidth.com does not have a relationship to the end user or any information about the end user and how the number is being used by the end user. In fact, Bandwidth.com may not provide any of the features of the end-user's services (including such things as call forwarding/routing, outbound calling with CallerID, SMS messaging services, etc. ) even though they may include a Bandwidth.com telephone number. This is in fact the case with the number you referenced. We have forwarded your complaint to our wholesale customer for investigation. Additionally, your concern may be a matter for law enforcement and we encourage you to work with your local law enforcement as may be appropriate. In other words, they're not going to take responsibility for their service. So, I'm going to pursue legal action just like I said I would when I messaged them and informed them that they had 24 hours to cease and desist. The fun part is, I have access to a small army of lawyers that I don't have to pay for. I tried to be civil, I tried to be polite. A family member received a call from 608 422 4776 asking for me and when the family member told them they had the wrong phone number they were advised to have me call right away or there would a warrant out for me. So when I called an Asian/Indian speaking woman answered and told me that I owed a loan from 2009 and wanted payment immediately.
