Ben Gaw's food is...ok. I tried one curry dish (can't recall which one now, but it included bamboo shoots) which was good and flavourful.
However, they really missed the mark on their Pad Thai. Pad Thai is one of those ubiquitous dishes that's served everywhere, uses simple ingredients, and has such basic and recognizable flavours that any respectable Thai restaurant should get it right.
When I think of Pad Thai, I think it's supposed to be a little sweet, a little spicy, with fragrant coriander, fishsauce and lime juice, and topped with crunchy peanuts. Ben Gaw's was missing all of those flavours and seemed to have been seasoned with primarily soy sauce. Yes, it did come with peanuts and a wedge of lime, but both those ingredients were bland.
I was recommended this place from a friend who really likes it. I cannot recommend the Pad Thai, but some of the other curries are quite ok. read more
